11 Side Effects Of Not Drinking Water Enough

With this one we shall be talking about the side effects of not drinking
water enough.

A lot of people are now so deeply into the habit of skipping water, it is not the no.1 on their liquid preference list even though its the most important and most healthy.

The truth is one cannot equate water with other drinks such as soda and sugary drinks.

Water cleanses you while the other drinks only had health issues to your system which is a bad thing.

Side Effects of Not Drinking Water Enough

1. Dehydration
One of the first side effects of not drinking water enough is that it will get you dehydrated.

Dehydration occurs when more water and fluids leave the body than enter it. Our body is roughly 75 percent water, and it is essential for our survival. Even low levels of dehydration can cause headaches, lethargy, and constipation.

2. Stomach Ulcers
There is a relationship between dehydration and stomach ulcers.

There is a medical school of thought which holds that what triggers or causes peptic ulcers is dehydration and stress.

Researchers who subscribe to this belief point out that approximately 40 percent of population carry the bacterium H. pylori in the United Kingdom (UK), yet only one out of five people who are infected with this bacterium actually develop peptic ulcers.
So H. pylori alone is not the cause of peptic ulcers.

Medical practitioners who hold this theory believe that when people don’t drink enough water, the lining of their stomach and duodenum are unable to generate the thick layer of mucus required to protect them from the highly acidic gastric juices.

The mucus layer is thus more susceptible to attacks by the bacterium H. pylori.
In other words, lack of water prevents our stomach from secreting thick layers of the mucosal lining.

3. Joint Pain
Are you among those ignorant of the fact that joint Pains can be exacerbated, or even caused, by dehydration?

Well, now you know!

Approximately 60% of joint cartilage is made from water, it is therefore critical that we keep hydrated during periods of joint damage.

Failure to do this would lower the production of synovial fluid and which will conaequently increase our risk of friction pain and cartilage deterioration.

What is Synovial Fluid?

The cartilage is a connective tissue that lines the surface of the joints and acts as a cushion between the bones, absorbing shock and easing friction. Cartilage is kept lubricated by a gel-like liquid known as synovial fluid, which is formed by glycosaminoglycan bonding with sulphur compounds.

4.Constipation
This is one of the side effects of not drinking water enough that a lot of people can relate with.

Being asked to drink enough water when finding it hard to stool is that advice we all seem to have gotten from our friends and family.

And it helps.

Constipation is a gastro-intestinal symptom that occurs when bowel movements are less frequent due a harder stool which is more difficult to pass.

According to WebMD Dehydration is one of the most common causes of
chronic constipation .

5. Body Temperature

Water plays an important role in helping us regulate our body temperature and not getting enough of it can really mess our system up.

Generally, we need to drink two litres of water per day (or 35ml per kilogram of bodyweight). And this does not cater for those hot days bundled up with those favorite exercise routine of ours.

Our body is a cooling machine, a cooling mechanism, both for external skin and internal organs, particularly following physical exercise.

Lack of water prevents our body from carrying out this very important task.
Failure to get rid of excessive heat in our system can really lead to some very serious health issues.

6. Hormonal Imbalance
According to the research published in the “Biochemistry journal”, investigators suggested that mild changes in the tissue hydration status can significantly influence the integrity of biological systems by affecting hormonal balance, serum osmolality, concentration of toxins or uptake of nutrients.

Long term disturbances in the tissue hydration can lead to oxidative stress that can further lead to DNA damage, permanent cellular dysfunction and end-organ damage.

Chemical imbalances can cause irregular heart rhythms, convulsions, and a general run-down feeling. You can eventually suffer severe health problems, such as kidney failure, loss of consciousness, low blood volume, and shock.

7. Premature Aging
Have you heard of the term “skin dehydration”? I think it is self explanatory.
When the skin becomes dehydrated, it looks dehydrated. And in my minds eye I can already see cracked skin.

Dehydration in the skin weakens its defense and creates skin sensitivity, irritation, and premature aging.

When your skin becomes dehydrated you experience symptoms of dryness, flakiness, roughness, irritation, and cracking; hence the look of prematurely aged skin.

8. Hunger
Dehydration causes you to believe you need to eat when you really need liquid intake.

Thirst occurs when your body needs water. When you do not drink enough water, your body receives mixed signals on hunger.
Which will lead you to overeat and consequently add unnecessary body weight.

Drinking an 8-oz. glass of water will reduce sensations of hunger within minutes.
Which will help regulate hunger pangs, as well as keep unnecessary body weight at bay.

9. Muscle Loss
Water is a vital component for muscle growth. This is that side effects of not drinking water enough that every athletic guy out there needs to know.

If you keep training when dehydrated, your strength and muscle size will decrease. In order to maintain 100% of your strength you MUST stay fully hydrated. Keep hydrated… keep gaining!

A report by the “Biochemistry Journal” found that decreased levels of water resulted in cell shrinking which causes muscle protein breakdown. Research found that the water content within a muscle cell (myocytes) plays a critical role in muscle breakdown. Maintaining adequate hydration levels will reduce protein breakdown and help with protein synthesis.

10. Long Period Of Illnesses
Water helps the body with the duty of flushing out toxins. When we don’t take in enough liquid this job becomes a difficult one.

And in a situation where a person is sick and not drinking enough water, this will cause the prevailing sickness to gain deep roots. As the toxins in the person stays locked up instead of being flushed out.

The accumulation of toxins within the body can make the dehydrated person feel continuously unwell.

11. Digestive Problems
The last among the side effects of not drinking water enough is the issue of digestion problems.

Lack of water in your system hinder or decrease the production of digestive juices.
In other words, in chronic dehydration, the secretion of digestive juices is less.
And that’s it!

We have come to the end of this post which by all standards can now be named 11 Side Effects of Not Drinking Water Enough.
