If we're going to start posting pictures of filling stations, we might as well close this thread and stop spamming the front page of the Politics section. How is that worthy of inclusion in a thread about development?

DMGS/ZIK's Statue Roundabout, Onitsha, to Wear a New State of the Art Look!

His Excellency Chief (Dr.) Willie M. Obiano in steady resolve and momentum to accelerate urban infrastructure upgrade and upkeep the beautification of urban spaces in Anambra State has ordered the remodeling of the DMGS/Zik's Statue Roundabout in Onitsha to 21st Century standards.

The site preparations of the remodeling work has commenced at the roundabout. And when the work is completed within the next 3 months, the historic roundabout will be sporting a new modern look as rendered in the 3D images bellow.

The following approach was taken to achieve his Excellency's directive:

1. Reconstruct the existing roundabout to meet modern standards in aesthetics and functionality.

2. Reconstruct the base (pedestal) of the existing Zik's statue and raise the platform to an elevation befitting the legend of the Right Honorable Dr. Nnamdi (Zik) Azikiwe, Owelle Osowa Anya Onitsha.

3. Introduce an iconic monument that maintains the grandeur and icon stature of Zik's place in the State and the Nation as well as represent an easily recognizable cultural element of the Onitsha people.

4. Altogether make the roundabout into a pleasing garden/open space that adds great value to the environment.

***** Next Up; Urban Renewal of Okpoko! *****

You are absolutely right, I saw those tusks yesterday and was wondering what it was all about.

This looks promising.

There's a distinct lack of trees in the pics. Hopefully they'd think of greening up the area as well.

Also, i hope they're not thinking of painting the base with that garish yellow-black-yellow scheme shown in the render! Painting that structure is a bad idea...the precast concrete should be left with its natural look.

The painting will make it look local and mediocre. But Nigeria governors are local and mediocre anyway. So, expect it to be painted yellow and black grin grin grin

Good to see the ANSG working with UNIDO on Nnewi Auto Industrial Zone. The Nnewi business folk are specialized in that area (auto and transport). They have the knowledge, the experience and the international connections. With support they should be producing parts and assembling vehicles for the African region. It would provide lots of employment and boost the GDP of the state.

The idea of specialization would help with other places. Onitsha metro has massive competencies in consumer goods manufacturing, logistics and distribution while Awka metro is basically a services area - government, finance, education, healthcare and hospitality.

These pictures of Oando here is inessential, Anambra host highest numbers of filling stations in Nigeria after Lagos, there are hundreds of filling stations spring up in every nocks and crannies, posting Oando here to me is an embarrassment. Thanks

Please dont go there, kano has more filling stations than anywhere in Nigeria. I think they might even have more than lagos.

Awka stadium was abandoned and Obiano is constructing an international conference centre in the former site of the stadium!

A stadium is a white elephant. The Uyo stadium that cost over 100 million dollars has been used less than 10 times by the natonal team over the past four years. Better to build an American high school.style basic soccer field with artificial turf, outdoor steel seating and a running track for youth to use as the FIFA goal project intended rather than the nonsense Obi built in Awka and Onitsha.

The Conference Center is a better projecte to dedicate resources tot. Look at how many events have been held at Eko Conference Center. It hosts more than 50 a year. Business conferences, Weddings like Dangotes daughter.

The Obiano Conference Center will help the state to host all those political meetings, business conferences, national associations and societal events that only Port Harcourt, Lagos and Abuja draw. Imagine Anambra hosting the National Bar Association for the first time or Africa Movie Awards or First Bank Annual Meeting or Tradeshows.

Anambra does not need another substandard Sh!t called stadium. Such as the Linda Ikpeazu stadium in Onitsha. Its better to build a world class international conference center that can bring important conferences to be hosted in Awka.

In the future a wide expanse of land to accommodate an international level stadium with parking for at least 1,000 cars can be built somewhere along Awka-Onitsha expressway to make sure it's easily accessible.

Inasmuch stadium is a white elephant project Anambra state need a befitting stadium that can host international matches. I don't mean something like Uyo but at least Nnamdi Azikiwe is enough.

Uyo stadium is as useless as fucxk, even the government Akwa Ibom State subsidize movie tickets to make sure people patronize the place.

Anambra state government is as mediocre as it is deceptive, look at Iweka, New Market and Niger Street and see how disgusting they are.

We need to make Anambra state neat, as long as we keep building roads with open drainages we are stuck in the past, as long as one government still allow rickety signposts and billboards to litter the state we are not moving anywhere.

Ministry of Environment in Anambra state is not doing enough, roadside sand dredgers, roadside traders and artisans as well as Okada and street urchins control major parts of the state.

ANSG need to stop people from crossing the roads anyhow, Owerri Road to Obosi flyover need to be blocked with iron fence and pedestrian bridge built around there. This will organize the place and reduce crime rate and accident.

Yes, we shouldn't embark on constructing mega stadia but mini stadia like the Linda ikpeazu stadium in Onitsha will provide the youths with places to develop their sports skills which are highly marketable. Co french centres can be left the private sector.

Obiano Calls For Siting Of Power Sub-Station In Nnewi

Governor Willie Obiano was speaking while playing host to management members of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited at the Government House, Awka.
Governor Obiano who spoke through the Deputy Governor, Dr Nkem Okeke revealed the vested interest of its administration in the development of the power sector, pointing out that power has been the bane of development in the Country, which he said informs the reason for the setting up of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, to address those numerous challenges and issues.
Governor Obiano who expressed understanding on lack of adequate funds to service critical sectors all over the country, called the attention of the agency to different uncompleted projects in the State.
While calling for more projects in the region to complement the ongoing industrialization of some areas, including Nnewi, the Governor who is a member of the Agency's Board, representing the South East, expressed optimism that a substation would be sited in Nnewi which is one of the industrial base of the State and the South East region.
The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited, Mr. Chiedu Ugbo who led the delegation, said that the visit was to brief Governor Obiano who represents the South East region on the Board, on the activities of the agency and explained that the project was set up with funds from the excess crude account and jointly owned by the Federal, state and local governments.

Mr. Ugbo further stated that apart from power generation, the agency has also been charged to ensure transmission, noting that one of the major transmission stations of the agency is situated at Ihiala with a feeder line towards Nnewi and hopefully, other parts of the State, to boost power, especially in the Industrial hubs.
He also told the Governor that since inception of its present management, the Agency has completed about thirty projects, assuing that one of their major transmission stations in Awka will be completed this year.
The General Manager, Procurement, Mrs Nkechi Mba while describing Anambra as a forward thinking State, expressed optimism that it would lend its strong voice on the Board on the need for additional funding, which according to her, will make a lot of difference in the discharge of their duties.
The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), a government agency which generates and distributes electricity through open and combined cycle gas turbine plants, has the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo as the Chairman of its Board.

Akwa Ibom state government generate faaaaar greater revenue from oyel money derivation than Anambra and run a far bigger annual budget. They, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa can afford to waste money on white elephant, unproductive ventures. Anambra cannot. And should not. Abuja's stadium is a mess. The National Stadium in Lagos which I pass everyday is a mess where destitutes live. These facilities gulp state money rather than generating revenue and fall into decay. Why would you want to saddle the state with such a burden. It seems driven more by vanity than any practical purpose.

I think we are all on the same page, there are areas Anambra state government need to invest and a stadium shouldn't be on the list. The media and tech ecosystem in Anambra need more infrastructure than erecting a foolish building. Developing a standard waterfront to boast the tourism industry should be the priority. In fact anything that will impact the local economy should be the topmost. Stadium economy is seasonal, we need to build a timeless economy

The value of international conference center is far higher than any stadium in Nigeria. Eko Conference Center hosts over 100,000 people a year that spend well over 30 billion naira in food, lodging and conference fees. Conference Centers bring valuable international and other personalities into a state to exchange contacts and ideas. It facilitates business and investment and is free marketing for a state. It also creates thousands of jobs in catering, transport and hospitality.

A stadium in Nigeria does not have the same cost benefits. Watching the Super Eagles play in Uyo has not made anyone want to rush their to invest. But each game costs the state millions of dollars to host. Nigeria FGN cannot maintain Abuja stadium talk less a small state like Anambra. We need to be practical. Build basic fields for the youths instead of stadia with tonnes of steel and concrete and you give them somewhere to expend energy instead of whining away at drinking joints. Such fields cost a few hundred million instead of tens of billions. You could go further put a track and tennis and basketball courts and make It sports arena. That's good enough for now.

a 30000 capacity stadium need just 5 games or activities to surpass conference centre.

benefits of stadium far out weigh conference centre.

fc Ifeanyi ubah Stadium is 18000 capacity.

the gate fee is 300 they play match thr every 2weeks

they dont always fill the stadium. but against the top teams they fill d stadium. they fill the stadium everytime they play champions league they hike gate fee to 500 for star matches
