Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says plans are underway to compel traffic offenders to pay one hundred thousand naira as penalty for a traffic offence. Oyeyemi said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on Nigeria Road Safety Strategy on Wednesday in Abuja. “You cannot arrest somebody for using a phone while driving and he pays four thousand naira as penalty. And almost immediately he goes back to commit same offence. “Fines are supposed to serve as deterrent, which is why I said that I am in support of what the National Assembly is doing presently amending the Act of the FRSC to make the fines go up. “I was not the one that initiated it, it is the National Assembly that initiated it and I am in support and I will make sure that before the middle of next year this is passed into law. “I believe that by the time traffic offenders’ start paying between fifty to one hundred thousand naira for a single traffic offence, they will not want to commit such offence again,” he said. The FRSC boss reiterated that penalties for traffic offences were to serve as deterrent, adding that the present regime of fines and penalties do not serve as deterrent. https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2017/12/20/frsc-plans-penalise-traffic-offenders-n100000-fine/ |

If the frsc wants it's officers to be massively admitted to various morgues or emergency care units in the country by middle of next year then they should implement the bill. 82 Likes 2 Shares |

Joker. Make it 100k and see Road safety officials become millionaires overnight. Instead of going to the bank to pay 100k drivers will give 10k to the officers and move on. Infact the road safety officers would suggest that to you as a form of subsidy. 20 Likes 2 Shares |

This will be a welcome development. However, the safety of FRSC officials will be jeopardized as many offenders won't mind running over them in a bid to escape paying such useless fine. No be today yansh dey back jare! 4 Likes |

madness in high places, even the 4k fine is too much for our 18k minimum wage. the APC government us only concerned on how to borrow money and forcefully extort more money from Nigerians, they have increased the price of everything from driving license to international passport, now it's traffic offense fine? bunch of thieving idiots. 9 Likes 1 Share |

Mumu people. Why won't he be in support? Small fines aren't the reason people commit offenses. People keep committing traffic offenses because of inconsistent enforcement. If traffic officers exact the dues from every offender instead of negotiating 1k by the road side, a legit 5k fine would be enough to deter an unruly motorist. But they turn a blind eye to some, and thereby encourage others to be "sharp guys". 6 Likes |

Stupid Boboye should realise that traffic fines are always a fraction of the minimum wage of any society so he shouldnt come and turn road safety into a revenue drive and collection agency as that willl bring corruption into it as officers will use the opportunity to start unduly harrasing drivers in a bid to extort a fraction of this 100k for their personal pocket ..we saw that in the Fashola days of a corrupt Lastma where every officer suddenly became a seatbelt offence spotter all in a bid to extort people for personal gains..The road safety can find better ways to discourage from breaking Traffic law by by thinking smarter instead of attempting to be a revenue generation agency for govt and its corrupt officers . 5 Likes |

All they ever know is to collect fines . There are too many potholes and bad roads in those stupid roads the mount checkpoints yet they are not bothered about the accidents they can cause, na to collect fine be their interest. FRSC if you want to collect fine, come and take it. 7 Likes |
