All commercial drivers licences are to be revoked as the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) embarks on measures to sanitice the nation’s highways.

According to the Corps Marshal of the commission, Mr. Osita Chidoka, of the estimated 40 million drivers, only 3.5 million were known through its data base to possess driving licensces. Of this figure, 500,000 are private.

Mr. Chidoka disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Delta State governor, Dr.Emmanuel Uduaghan, who was decorated as a special marshal.

Describing the issue of motor licences as being bastardised, the chief executive officer of FRSC said in the new dispensation, drivers must be subjected to series of tests, including eyes, state of health and ability to read road signs.

“We have many drivers who have licences but can’t read road signs,” he said.

He said Nigeria has the highest number of commercial drivers licences.

The corps marshal noted the increasing accident rates in the country with Nasarawa state recording the highest causalities and urged all stakeholders to put hands on deck to stem the tide.

The governor, Dr. Uduaghan, in his response, tasked the FRSC to organise special trainings for convoy drivers in order to reduce recklessness. “They (convoy drivers) think they are kings of the roads,” he explained.

He also charged the commission to enforce the law on safety helmet and check the increasing cases of under-aged drivers.

Uduaghan said it was the belief of the state in safe driving that the government was constructing modern roads and with streetlights in major cities in the states.
