It is not the duty of the Edo State Government to provide free healthcare to all its citizens. And there's nothing stopping you from doing what this guy did.

Funny how you refer to him as a 'common corper'. Do i remind you that a youth corps member is by default an adult and a graduate? So what's 'common' about him?
Cohomology:

This must be the most idiotic, most foolish reply ever made on Nairaland. Infinite stupidity in all its ugliness!

Why exactly did you post this rubbish? I repeat it is NOT the duty of the Edo State government or any state government to provide free health care. You are seriously confusing a socialist party's manifesto with declared government policy.

Great initiative by the doctor.

But honestly, i don't think it will achieve much.

The children who currently have worms will be cured, but when they go back to their polluted source of water, when they continue with unhygienic ways, poor disposal of sewage, they will become reinfected. And all the money used to procure the drugs will have gone to waste.

Diseases need to be tackled at their source. We need people with the doctor's heart to be in positions where policies regarding sanitation and clean water can be implemented.
That is one of the few sensible posts on this thread.  Tackle the Public Health system by overhauling and renovating existing systems of water supply and disposal that contribute to individual susceptibility to water-borne diseases.
This should be done BEFORE even talking about the government providing universal health care.

Instead of these swine heads respecting the real show of concern by "poor" Dr. Kanu to the people of Ubiaja, when the people have been neglected by the flimsy Edo State government and the absolutely useless Nigerian Federal Government, they're talking about "free healthcare" and "most important problems". Too many goats are Nigerians!

^^Again you are entirely missing the point. You are the one that made the spurious link between the discovery of this drug and free health care.

"Speaking at the ceremony, the Secretary to the Esan South Local Government Council, Mr. Destiny Aimiebenomon who represented the chairman, Prince Andrew Ojiemenkele, expressed delight at the initiative of Dr. Kanu in the de-worming of the children, saying that the council provided him with local support to enable the children who will make use of the infrastructures provided by the government at the primary schools to be healthy and of sound mind".

A lot of people here did not even bother reading the article. They are just coming here to score cheap political points. In fact this initiative was  made possible by the joint efforts of the Youth Corper, the private sector as represented by Juhel Pharmaceutical Company, and the Esan South Local Government .

Again I fail to see the link between this positive discovery and the mindless attack on government officials.

Ol boy,

It is a fact that the Nigerian government, at every level - local, state and federal, is pathetically inept. Okay, that's settled and let's leave that for a moment.

My gripe is with the gang of ingrates who instead of thanking Dr. Kanu for having such a good initiative, are attempting to belittle his efforts.

These folks can't get their empty heads to accept the fact that a doctor from Abia State is the one showing some initiative to help some poor Edo State people, while soulless criminals like Tony Anenih (and the rest of the useless elements representing Edo State at the federal level) are working very hard to further impoverish the people of Edo State.

My message to those ingrates: Thank the doctor or show some appreciation or just shut the f-ck up!

Community service and development is our collective responsibility, and i am confused how his donation is linked to eradicating worms in the whole of Edo state

@ tensor777, people like you are exactly what has gone wrong with this country, if the Government cannot provide basic amenities that countries with far less resources have been able to provide since the 1970's and people still defend such an evil system, then it is easy to see why our country is gradually dilapidated.
Your Post lack logic and is full of the senseless Vitriol that has kept Nigerians in their Prisoner mentality that was created by Military Rule,
Let Me ask You, could you please tell me what the responsibility of the Government is given that they control all the resources of the Country,Please just tell me what their responsibility is.
- What does the Nigerian Constitution have to do with the inability to provide Health care,
-even the most Capitalist Country in the World is America is making serious efforts to cover 98% of its citizens so your Socialist Argument does not hold water.

None of your post lacks any Logic and sense just the same empty insults designed to terrorize Nigerians to submission to an obviously failed System and this is a clear insult to the Intelligence of Nigerians as a whole.
@ Nigerians we all have a duty to question and rise up to our Government and hold them accountable because the are elected Public Servants and not Monarchs. If they feel they are not to be held responsible then they should relinquish their offices.

So when i was showing appreciation for the good doctor's action, your brain was switched off, abi?

people like you and kev-d are the reason why Nigeria will struggle to improve. If you cannot get off the childish mentality of placing ALL the blame at the feet of the federal government, how will you move forward?
It is not the responsibility of the Government to provide FREE healthcare to everyone. Even in the United states, does the Government do that for free? So why then attack the government in the same breath that you laud this doctor?

The role of the Government in healthcare should be to focus on easily spread epidemics and diseases capable of causing great harm to people. Which is why you find the Government providing free Vitamin A and Polio vaccines to children. As a Corper, i myself went out on one of such medical missions. The federal government has also been providing free treatment for Tuberculosis. I've heard the jingles on the radio.

Worm infestation does not fall into this category, and i rather think it is a duty of any parent to deworm their child as at when due. nearly all the parents in Nigeria know about worms - they have to take that step to get their child dewormed, not the Government. Worm medicine is relatively cheap afterall.

The only thing the government can do in this situation is to increase awareness on the need to deworm children once in a while to kill worms that can slow child development.

PS: As people have said before, you cannot 'eradicate' worms that way. You need to deworm again in a while, as those kids will pick up more worms with time. Hopefully the doctor would have educated them on lifestyle habits to avoid to remain worm free.

I thought as much that some people would like to twist this thread into an ideological battle between socialism and capitalism. That is not surprising given the original sensationalised title.
Well for the record one can infer that in principle, going by the constitution, and in practice, going by declared government policy, Nigeria is a capitalist country.
The obvious corollary to this is that health-care delivery is a collective responsibility to be shared by the government, the free-market private sector and voluntary organisations.
In fact the article shows how the coordination and cooperation of these different segments of society can bring about effective  health-care solutions.

What a noble effort. This was the very essence of creating the National Youth Service Corps, so that young graduates could actually contribute to their environment, using the skills they have acquired. The fact that he also has a "religious" motivation (wanting to spread the Gospel as well wink) makes me extra proud to think that there are still some good-hearted people in Nigeria.
