High Times Becomes the First IPO to Accept Cryptocurrencies

On Thursday, the well-known cannabis culture brand and publication High Times announced it’s holding an initial public offering (IPO) and that it will be the first regulated A+ stock offering to accept cryptocurrencies.

The firm High Times is a popular cannabis-focused monthly magazine that was founded in 1974. The publication founded by Tom Forcade reports on the marijuana counterculture and the legalization of cannabis. On August 2, 2018, the legacy company announced it is holding an IPO so individuals can invest in the firm by buying shares. In an unusual twist, the firm has also revealed it is the first A+ stock offering to accept bitcoin core (BTC), and ethereum (ETH).

Ecobank Report Finds Significant Presence of Crypto in 36 African Countries

A report published by the pan-African bank, Ecobank Transnational Inc., has found that in spite cryptocurrencies exerting a notable presence in each of the 36 African countries in which the company operates, only South Africa and Swaziland have adopted a “generally favorable and lenient [regulatory] stance” concerning to cryptocurrencies.

Ecobank’s report finds that “As in many other parts of the world, African governments and central banks are mostly adopting a ‘wait and see’ method when it comes to regulating cryptocurrencies.”

The report states that “Many African governments and regulators acknowledge both the risks and the potential positive impacts of cryptocurrencies,” and that some African governments have shown an “appreciat[ion of] the difference between cryptocurrencies and the underlying blockchain technology.”

in spite of such, Ecobank finds that many African states “have been quiet in authorizing cryptocurrency transactions, and mostly remain fearful about the potential risks,” adding that “African countries appear to be looking to their neighbors to regulate and innovate first, and learn from their mistakes, rather than being the first mover.”

Only Seven Crypto Firms Authorized to Legally Operate in Thailand

The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has made known the names of seven cryptocurrency companies that have been approved to legally operate in the country. Five of them are crypto exchanges; two are cryptocurrency dealers.

The Thai SEC has made known the names of the cryptocurrency firms that have been approved to operate in the country while their applications are being reviewed by the regulators. Seven companies, consisting of five crypto exchanges and two dealers, have been granted temporary approval to operate until their applications are either authorized or denied.

Crypto exchanges that have been approved are Bitcoin Co. Ltd. (BX), Bitkub Online Co. Ltd., Cash2coins Co. Ltd., Satang Corporation (Tdax), and Coin Asset. The two authorized dealers are Coins TH Co. Ltd. and Digital Coin Limited (Thai WM).

Australian Bills Can Soon Be Paid With 50-100 Cryptocurrencies

A partnership between a bill payment firm and a crypto exchange will allow Australians to pay their bills with between 50 and 100 cryptocurrencies. Customers can use any coins in their Cointree accounts to pay their bills irrespective of whether the billers accept cryptocurrency.

Bill payment company Gobbill and cryptocurrency exchange Cointree jointly made known a partnership on August 20 to enable Australians to pay bills using cryptocurrencies.

Gobbill’s website states that bills issued from any Australian provider can be paid through its system, including utilities, telecommunications, council rates, and insurance.

Bank of Thailand Developing Central Bank Digital Currency

Following the adoption of the country’s first cryptocurrency regulation, the central bank of Thailand is working on its own digital currency in cooperation with the country’s biggest banks. At first, the new currency will be used for interbank transfers; this phase is expected to be completely developed by the first quarter of next year.

Thailand’s central bank, the Bank of Thailand (BOT), made known on August 21 its central bank digital currency (CBDC) project called Inthanon.

Eight of the country’s biggest commercial banks are taking part in this project. They are Bangkok Bank, Krung Thai Bank, Bank of Ayudhya, Kasikorn Bank, Siam Commercial Bank, Thanachart Bank, Standard Chartered Bank (Thailand) and Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (Hsbc).

At first, “the concerned parties will jointly design and develop the prototype system of money transfer between institutions by issuing [a] wholesale CBDC” built on R3’s Corda platform, the BOT detailed, elaborating.

Report: North Korea to Hold a Crypto Conference

North Korea is reportedly planning to hold a conference devoted to blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies. The event, said to have been due to take place in October, is expected to bring specialist from around the world who will meet representatives of North Korean enterprises.

The Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea (DPRK), the hermit communist state that suffers from bad publicity in the crypto space, is arrange a cryptocurrency and blockchain conference in Pyongyang in October. This is according to a report by the U.S.-based Radio Free Asia (RFA) quoted by the South Korean Yonhap news agency.

The first Korean International Blockchain Conference will be a two-day program in the capital city of the DPRK, starting on October 1. According to the report, the conference will bring together experts in the field from around the world. Participants are also expected to hold meetings with representatives of the North Korean state-run entities on October 3.

Coinbase: 42% of World’s Best Universities Offer Crypto Courses

The ecosystem’s biggest bank and quasi-exchange, Coinbase, commissioned a survey about higher education (students and faculty) attitudes toward crypto and blockchain. They found over 40% of leading universities around the world offer at least one course in blockchain or crypto, and 25% of all students, irrespective of major, said they would consider taking classes in one or the other subject.

Takeaways of the study include finding closely half, 42%, of the globe’s best universities offer at least one course on either the subject of blockchain or crypto. And, as Coinbase made clear, “Students from a range of majors are interested in crypto and blockchain courses — and universities are adding courses across a variety of departments.”
