Student Welfare In Nigeria: The Role Of An Education Manager by smartaphyl(m): 10:08am On May 04, 2018
Today's Society needs to have enough educated people ( especially if we want economic and social growth ). So, nowadays the main goal of universities is to attract, provide adequate education for students and produce competent graduates. That's why, universities as well as other educational programmes are offering even more and more services : Academic and non academic while the academic are, so to say, the most important, in recent Society and for new youth generation that is coming from consumeristic society, non academic service are even, more important. Thus, if policy makers and education managers want to plan adequate supply, and provide effective education, they must consider students needs and wishes. They must be objective. Scientific surveys and projects that will answer questions like ; what kind of desires, expectation and needs do student have must be considered form time to time.
Student welfare refers to the promotion and maintenance of good learning, good mental and physical health, as well as social well-being if students, and conditions which are conducive to these. Students welfare is integral to all aspects of school life and school managers must aim to ensure that a safe and supportive environment and culture is created and maintained so that the experience of teaching and learning is enhanced for all students.
SOCIOLOGIST PERSPECTIVE : equality of educational opportunity.
When one talks of equal opportunity in reference to education, it embraces, according to HURNS" equal chances to successes or failure in a common school system ". With different thoughts of sociologists we can asserts that " students welfare is trampled upon when there is no equal opportunity to school services such as screening exercise into various level of education, facilities etc. When there is no equal opportunity to school services, the advantaged students might out perform the less advantaged, and these in terms affect such students who might feel inferior to those who have access to the better health care services, hostel facilities etc. Students welfare will be affected if a school management can't see to the issue of some certain students having too much access to better educational services while others are lacking profusely.
Role of an education manager
The role of an education manager in ensuring student we'll being encompasses their strive, attitudes towards meeting the expectations, desires, or needs of the students. Also the National policy stipulated that learning shall be learned centered that's the educational experience that student will be exposed to should always seek to meet their needs, interest and motivation, capabilities.
Alzamel(2014) who has based his research framework in Firdaus (2005) brings definition on student satisfaction as " attitude that students derive from their evaluation of academic and non academic related services that they are offered by their institutions " Asgari and Borzooei (2014) assets that responsibility for student satisfaction comes from the University. Students over all satisfaction comes from sum of students academic, social, physical and spiritual value experiences as a product of the University ".
Several studies that have been conducted over the years such as HEDZOT ( High Education zone of tolerance ) adapted from Zeithaml et al ( 1993) have all shown that non academic factors are also important in efficient service delivery and to find what activities that are influential on students satisfaction. In that area we can find social support as one important tool. For example, Talt ( 2000) stresses typical support services for students maybe : admission and pre study advisory services, tutoring, guidance and counseling services, assessment of prior learning, library services, information management and other administrative systems. Archanbault (2008) in his study of social support found out that students expect more from institutions.

That includes from administrators to be more visible and to interact with the students, appealing campus facilities, quality / modern equipment and prompt service make more grow activities. ( Archanbault 2008:42)
Finally, this analysis shows that student satisfaction is important while it brings students to better academic achievements and their well being. Students satisfaction tells us whats students expect from educational institutions and how they evaluate what they receive. Factors that have influence on student welfare can be academic ( based on teaching quality ) and non academic ( staff, environment, safety, services ).
