Actually you only patent a process/design, and copyright/trademark everything else but an idea.
Thanks for the info bro,tho I noticed its mainly for designs but I tot it works for things like this too. 2bottles of orijin for u.

Cyrealmusic:

Go and listen to the guitar played on simi's own and listen to the guitar sir uwaifo played then you will know what is called copyright.

Ok, lemme burst ur bubble, do u know that even if anything sounded alike he may not be even able to sue them if he did not copyright the song. If u like form a new word as long as u did not copyright it u cant sue anybody for using it....In the american Music system, u can copyright part of a song or the whole song before u can sue someone. Dem wey dey sue people uoandan u think say dem no dey pay copyright dues? How many people dey copyright songs for naija and yea I once did introduction to music business in berkley music school. So except its a 'registered trademark' baba no fit do anything we kno as e dey go. Tho she should have tryna referenced Baba Vikky sha. #Peace

What a disgrace to Nigeria. Please how many presidents do we hear always leaving their country to another country for medical checkup.

Nigeria president going for checkup in UK is a big shame to the country as a whole. If the Nigerian president is not confident about the health care system in his country, then I wonder about the masses that can't even afford a trip by bus to neighboring countries.

The number one citizen of a country finding better health care outside his country and leaving those he rules to die in the country.

We are coming for all politicians soon. We will end all corrupt lives by all means. It is a greater war than that of the child's play Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen are doing but we know we will be fighting a greater course.

All level of government will be wiped out and the humble shall rule.

We are getting ready to what has never been seen before in Nigeria. No Level for any useless cabal from the presidency.

This is just a brief information for what is expected.

This is last long overdue

It is not just the word, the lyrics and rhythm. I sincerely hope you have listened to both songs carefully before concluding. From the guitar to the hook the similarity is very obvious.
Broooos ye! I hope it's the same version of Simi and Uwaifo song we listened too. Uwaifo looks more of afrobeat/highlife while Simi sounded more of contemporary pop. No noticeable similarities. I will make sure I listen to both songs against this week... Nothing similar

I guess you know more the great Prof Victor Uwaifo sorry the small Victor Uwaifo. You need to teach him about copyright laws sir Afterall his over 50 years in the arts not just as an academia but also as a performer is not good enough. Weh done sir

Let's just wait and see. This issue will die a natural death because if he sues Simi to court he will lose.

typical nigerian youth... senseless

really sad that old man knows his right better than Nigerian youths..this is why Ur politicians see youths as fóools
Don't mind them. Instead of them to research and make enquiries, they're telling a man old enough to be their grandpa to respect himself. They were probably born from year 2000. "Joromi" is the property of sir Victor uwaifo.

[quote author=undefeated post=67482496]Some times we are blind to our own faults. Adekunle Gold one my favourite Nigerian musician had called out Nollywood for using his song without his consent whereas they used joromi without Sir victor Uwaifor calling them out. Sir Uwaifor is calling them out because they did same and he left them alone [/quote
Have u listened to both songs?]

Keep ranting! Plagiarism is plagiarism. Let's even leave the implication of such, if committed with the academic world.

Remember 50cent? He almost gorged out eyes of a "bootlegger" when he saw him in a New York club.

I had a friend who was barred from entering the U.S.A, at JFK Airport because he was found with photocopied 'instruction guide' of AUTOCAD SOFTWARE--98 version. They were mad at him. Those people don't take it lightly when you VIOLATE THEIR PATENT RIGHTS.
What of the Italian instrumentalist who sued Michael Jackson for part usage of his instrumental notes? He won and was paid US $18M then!

Sir Uwaifo has a case against Simi. When her ilk won't stop releasing songs after 2mins sessions in their studios. Just release noise, softened with mixed beats. Days of yore was LYRICS-CENTRIC not these noises. John Drille harped on a chord which could draw their quality men of oldies to him. Lovely country vibes from him.

Lil Kesh need go internship before mapping his own label.

God bless folks.
Pseudo-intellectual at Work again. Pretending like you know better when you don't. If I sing a song and name it Micheal does that mean that I own the copyright of such a name considering that it was existing even before I sang the song. Oya answer.

This is an easy win for the Maestro if he takes the matter to court.

I laugh at the gross ignorance of kids these days.

Some are ignorant because a number of Nigerian artistes have stolen words and music from foreign musicians without consequence. Notable among such Nigerian artistes is P square. I believe the only reason P Square got away with this (when they infused music from western artistes) is jurisdiction. If P Square were based in a country where the artistes had officially launched their music, they would have obtained permission.

Simi is well educated. I am surprised she didn't as much as call Prof Uwaifo before using a part of his melody and lyrics.
You don't even know what the bone of contention is, but you still went ahead to comment. Mtchew

A vast majority of comments glaringly show that most of y'all are ill-informed as regards IP laws . Firstly, Intellectual property has 3 branches viz Copyright, Patents and Trademarks. Secondly, for copyright protection (which sir uwaifo is claiming under), you don't have to register your work as protection is automatic as long as it satisfies the requirements of originality and fixation....Thirdly, in certain instances, mere titles can be protected under the law. This is where the person claiming ownership of such word can prove he birthed such word or such word arose from his coinage...Now,i don't know much about the origin of the word 'Joromi' but if uwaifo can prove he's the innovator of the word, as well as the meaning ascribed to it as used by Simi in the song, then she's in trouble big time
P.S: I'm not a lawyer, I'm still learning the ropes as an undergrad
Joromi is a name and it existed long before Sir Uwaifo. So how exactly can he lay claim to it?

Adele you mean?

Well done. I tire for you too sir.
Point made. Point seen.

Mujtahida:

go educate yourself please. is it the word Joromi that Uwaifo is claiming an infringement of or his song 'joromi'?

is 'Hello' not a word? is 'Hello' also not the title of two different popular songs -one by Lionel richie and the more recent one by Adiele?
i tire for nigerians.

the veterans are not intimidating no new generation. those men were youths when they worked their brains and came up with something unique and beautiful. the new generation should stop copying. work your brain, task your mind. and if you must copy get into proper legal arrangements and agreements with the original right holder and give credit to them fir their hardwork and creativity. no be to dey copy people work dey use am shine

It is just a word! Do you know how many artists have used the word 'Bootylicious' in their music since Beyonce sang it? Do you think they all paid her to sing with it? Even Oxford incorporated the word in their dictionary and paid her nothing for it. No court is going to award settlement to an artist because someone else use a word they coined or used. You can only have a case if your lyrics or beats get used without permission as in the case of danfo drivers vs Tekno saga.

I understand your explication and example. Naming the song "Joromi" isn't the same as mentioning it as just a word in a song.
It's like stealing a unique brand name such as Coca-Cola.
It tends to steal the shine of the original, therefore the originator has to protect his work
