Singer, Ruby Gyang, is one artiste who has managed to be relevant in her career, despite her status as a single mother. Recall that the singer has a daughter with rapper, Jesse Jagz.

Sharing her motherhood experience, Gyang said,

“There is really no formula to it; I just do it. I take it one day at a time and I make sure that every day, I tackle whatever I need to. By God’s grace, I have been able to get by. It’s not like I have a manual that I consult every time before taking decisions. It could be tough at times but I always manage to pull through.”

Maintaining that she doesn’t do the job of parenting alone, she said,

“Jesse Jagz is very much involved in the life of our daughter; so, it’s not like I’m doing it alone. We have a balanced relationship and we bring up our daughter in a healthy way.”

Ruby also doesn’t agree that Nigerians artistes aren’t socially conscious. She said,

“I think that artistes are trying in terms of being socially conscious. Some do it directly, while others do it indirectly; whether they’re singing about love or the country. Inasmuch as you are putting positivity out there, it’s all in that direction. I feel that we have a decent number of Nigerian artistes doing well in that regard. When people listen to pop music, I don’t think they are necessarily looking to hear socially-conscious lyrics. Rather, they just want to dance, party and basically have a good time. Because pop music is more dominant, it could seem like there are no conscious songs but if you listen to artistes such as Brymo, Bez and me, you would find that we always try to be positive. We also involve ourselves in causes that would be beneficial to the people and help humanity.”

On whether she has ever been tempted to change her style of music to be more successful commercially, Gyang said,

“Yes, that pressure is always there, especially when you see that people that do a certain type of music receive all the accolades. However, I feel that there is room for every kind of artiste and music. You just need to have the courage and patience to push your craft. I have a quarterly concert tagged ‘O Live’ which is held in Lagos and Abuja. The second edition holds in June. I am really excited about it because I feel that as a live performing artiste, you need your own platform to truly express yourself.”
