Sanusi said this during an interview with our correspondent in commemoration of his 4th year on the throne

He had also complained about the lack of transparency at the nation’s top oil firm occasioned by the dubious payment of petroleum subsidy.

When asked if he was satisfied with how the NNPC was being run under the current administration, the emir said no law or regulation had been put in place to change how things were being done in the corporation.

The emir said, “I have not seen a change in laws or regulations that will institutionalise any changes. It is far more important to put in place the institutional changes that make it impossible for things to be done.”

While insisting that the payment of subsidy on petroleum products must be scrapped immediately, Sanusi said the problem of NNPC was beyond the change of its leadership.]

I rest my case.

And you threw all those tantrums during the last administration? When did you receive this new angelic revelation sah?

Angels don't lead any organisation, only human do. He's just being rhetorical. During GEJ's time, you and I knew things were done in a very awful way. So, he (Sanusi) was forced to speak. His only error was that he didn't gather the facts right, a situation that casted aspersions on whether his criticism was really logical and forthright.

So the problem of NNPC's corruption in a nutshell is simply selfish greed and refusal to put in place the right reforms. No need for too much grammar

The problem is greed and no honesty. Cravings for money. If not nnpc should be scraped. Petrobras, petronas of Malaysia, cnooc Chinese national oil company and exonmobil etc are all doing well.

No refineries, so we import every fuel we consume. Wait until dangote finish his refinery, he will pocket this whole nation.

sassysure:
Why is he not coming hard on Buhari the way he attacked Jonathan's administration?

I forhot,Buhari is his brother.
When i remember how Jonathan was insulted, maligned and called all sorts of names during his administration, i weep for him. Virtually everything this present govt accused him of, it has trebled by 100%. Look at Sanusi who was blowing hot, and sabotaging the Jonathan's administration was now saying that only angels could run the NNPC and escape being corrupt. He lambasted Diezani Allison Madueke and did all sorts of gangsteric acts he had summoned courage to do, all because Jonathan is a humble, gentle and quiet man. Even when the pump price of fuel was increased from N87 to N145, nobody batted an eyelid, yet he was secretly paying subsidies into his (Buhari's) pocket. It's hard to understand how a pump price will be increased, yet subsidies are being paid. This govt is dubious; it lacks integrity.

What pains me most is that even Fr Mbaka joined in that conspiracy, but today, he's as silent as a grave - a deafening silence at its peak. Even when Fulani herders slaughtered his fellow Rev. Frs and Christians, this deafening silence of his continued unabated. Well, God watches over all we do, how we hate and treat others like shits; He sees everything and a day of reckoning is coming when we shall all stand before him and give accounts of our stewardship on earth. To add insult to injury, Fr Mbaka said that he pitied Buhari, that he (Buhari) is a good man but he is surrounded by bad people. Was it not the same thing that happened to Jonathan, yet he lambasted Jonathan in a most ungodly manner?

Sanusi, Fr Mbaka and all those people who conspired against Jonathan owe him an apology. The state of the country at present is even worse if not worst. Today, corruption abounds, security is zero, people are being massacred on a daily basis by Fulani herders, yet those who were against Jonathan could not find their voices again - they suddenly became deaf and dumb overnight. That's not how a country is run.

Dele Momodu even wrote that the recent Police recruitment was skewed. The North got the highest slots but they are the least educated. In admission, the cut-off mark will be reduced for the Northerners so that they could be offered admission. There are no equity and justice in this country, and it's this maltreatment against the South, was an "indirect" cause of the 1st coup in Nigeria. Southern officers would go to Sandhurst and perform creditably well more than the Northern officers, yet Balewa would just prefer a Northern officer of a lower rank to be higher in rank than the Southern officer who was smarter than he. Many people will not believe me that apart from corruption, tribalism and nepotism were the cause of the 1st coup in Nigeria.

Africans think being good and transparent is impossible. There are hundreds of National oil corporations in Western world, yet we don't hear of such rot in those corporations, which is why they are able to move to greater heights.

What is really wrong with Blacks? They always justify stupidity, don't believe that good can come out of them, and always gives excuses for their stupidity.

The other time OBJ said that even Christ cannot conduct free and credible election in Nigeria, yet many sane climes in Europe conduct free, credible elections in their countries.
Does it mean that blacks don't believe they can achieve good collectively?

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi (II), says the subsidy regime in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has compromised the corporation to the extent that only an angel may be able to run the corporation honestly.

Sanusi said this during an interview with our correspondent in commemoration of his 4th year on the throne.

Sanusi was suspended as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria by the then President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014 after accusing the NNPC of failing to remit $20bn into the government’s coffers despite high oil prices.

While insisting that the payment of subsidy on petroleum products must be scrapped immediately, Sanusi said the problem of NNPC was beyond the change of its leadership.

He added, “It is not about the persons in the NNPC but about whether anyone can make a system operate honestly when there are such huge arbitrage opportunities. We need to import angels for that to happen.

“So, for me these are the issues. It is an economist’s nightmare. Sadly the very reason this subsidy should be scrapped is probably the reason it never will be. For those who profiteer from it, it is just too good to be true.”

The monarch, who described subsidy payment as ineffective, said its continuous payment was a “recipe for bankruptcy”.

The former CBN governor added, “The petroleum minister has disclosed that this government has spent N1.4tn already on fuel subsidy and for most of this period, oil price was between low and moderate.

“You can imagine how much we will pay as oil price goes up. Imagine if that money had gone into the power sector or agriculture and education and health. So for me this government inherited a bad situation but if it continues with these programmes, the next government will also inherit a bad situation which is a shame.”

Explaining the manner in which petroleum subsidy is paid, the emir said when the global price of crude oil increases, Nigeria fails to benefit because the government increases the payment on subsidy.

He said, “What we have is not a subsidy. The Federal Government guarantees Nigerians a maximum price per litre for fuel. And this is a product we import. And its price is based on unpredictable underlying commodity prices.

“So what the Federal Government is saying is look it does not matter what the price of oil is internationally, what the exchange rate is, what interest rate is, what shipping clearing and demurrage is, I am so rich that I will ensure you get fuel at this maximum price and I will pay the difference.

“Meanwhile, the balance sheet of the Federal Government is not hedged in anyway against these risks. As a professional risk manager, I have never seen a policy that is so guaranteed to bankrupt anyone as this policy.”

Shut what down? shocked Do Shell, Mobil or Petrobras offices in Nigeria own any refinery, petroleum products depot or network of pipelines? If you do not know what NNPC is, then please kindly educate yourself. NNPC is a state-owned oil corporation, just like Statoil/Equinor ASA is owned 67% by the Norway govt, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A (PDVSA) is owned by the Venezuelan govt, Petrobras is owned 54% by the Brazilian govt, Aramco owned 100% by the Saudi Arabia govt etc. It is best to reform or streamline NNPC's operations, but making a call that it should be shut down is ridiculous.

Saudi Aramco's market value has been estimated at between $14 trillion and $21 trillion, making it the most valuable company in the world. It is one of the largest companies in the world by revenue and, according to accounts seen by Bloomberg News, the most profitable company in the world. Saudi Aramco has both the world's second-largest proven crude oil reserves, at more than 270 billion barrels (4.3×1010 m3), and second-largest daily oil production. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudi_Aramco

I wasn't talking about shell or Mobil Nigeria ...NNPC is supposed to be an oil producing company but today nobody knows what it is...it doesn't own any oil producing process or staff but just keeps doing nonsense Joint venture where it contributes absolutely nothing to the venture aside from collecting it's 60 percent and looting it . Oga, cut the crap. sad There are a lot of publications online and in print, that show exactly what NNPC truly is - a state-owned commercial organisation. Educate yourself and stop spewing strange tales. How can you say it "doesn't own any oil producing process or staff?" Are you for real, or just repeating fake stories you have heard? shocked Who owns the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), the exploration and production firm? Is it not NNPC? NPDC is the production arm of NNPC. All the production staff are NNPC/NPDC staff. As I speak to you, NPDC production level is significantly growing and would soon hit the 500,000 barrel per day (b/d) target from its current 230,000b/d, which would almost place it at per with the highest producers in the country. So what are you saying?

The regulator of the oil industry is DPR - the Directorate of Petroleum Resources. undecided You really need to carry out a lot of research, instead of showing off the shallow contents of your mind. NNPC also holds in trust the 40% share of the oil fields, in the joint venture arrangements, the country has signed with the oil multinationals. Its subsidiary called NAPIMS liaises with these multinationals and sells crude realised from the oil fields, to the international market. If NNPC was looting 60% of its revenue, how would it pay its staff, remit money into the federation account and still carry out its upstream, midstream and downstream activities? How? shocked
