PART FIVE

Two weeks became a month, Gbenga did not communicate so I decided to call him. It rang through until it cut without answer. Maybe he's still angry. I tried again and after ringing twice he picked my call. Good afternoon Gbenga, I greeted. Good afternoon Prisca, he replied with a cold voice. Are you still angry? I asked him. Should I not still be angry when my woman whom I love dearly thought I was an robber having spent so much on her? I am sorry, I apologised. It's okay, he said. Can we see tomorrow? I asked. I will be very busy in the office tomorrow and I doubt if we can see. Let's see by the weekend.

How was office today, I asked him. At least I now know he works in an office from his statement. We thank God, and how has been your studies been too? How have you been coping all this while? You must be very broke now. I will send some money into your account tomorrow. Thank you, I appreciated him. After our reconciliation, my love for Gbenga became fear. I lived in fear of dating a man I know nothing about. I began to think about a story our pastor shared with us about a lady who was married to a ghost for three years. She married him without knowing anything about him. After three years, it was discovered he was a ghost. Anytime I wanted to shift my mind off Gbenga's case, that story will flashback.

I began to trail him. I engaged a guy in my class to help me trail him everywhere. All I wanted him to get for me is his place of work, his residence and the name and or the contact address of any of his friends. Two weeks was gone, Dave could not bring me any tangible information about Gbenga. I paid him another money to trail him again for another week. By the end of the third week, Gbenga stopped coming around. He seemed to have gotten a hint that he's been trailed. He told me he will be traveling for a week for an official assignment to Jigawa state. He showed up again after a week with plenty stories and my trailing move was forgotten.

I noticed I hadn't seen my period for sometimes now. I told Blessing about it and she advised me to run a pregnancy test. What ?, this is the first time I am missing my period and it is obvious I am pregnant. Fear of what I will tell aunty Seyi and what will happen to my education began to generate fear for me. Suppose Gbenga refuses to accept responsibility, what will happen to me? I summoned courage to run a pregnancy test and it was confirmed I was pregnant. That night I didn't sleep through out for the thought of what will happen to me next.

You have to tell him, Blessing insisted. Call him now and inform him you have to see him urgently. Put your fears away and do the right thing. But how can you be having unprotected sex with a man that refused to let you know his house and his people? What were you thinking, I thought you are a smart girl? How could you Prisca? Pick this phone now and call him. She picked my phone and stretched it towards me. Call him now or I will help you call him. She snatched back the phone from me after waiting for me to dial his number but I didn't. She dialed his number and gave me back the phone. Take and tell him you want to see him urgently. I took the phone and Gbenga greeted on the other side of the phone. Hello Prisca.
