@Kuwena
It's not about my idea of gradually floating the 100 companies being slow. It's about effectively marrying idealism with realities on ground. To expect 100 blue chip companies to be floated over night in Nigeria would definitely be asking for the moon. I doubt if such a miracle would even happen because it tends to defy the Biblical rule about starting little and growing steadily to become great:"He that is faithful over little is faithful (and will be set) over much"
I do not doubt for one second that we need that number of companies as soon as possible, but to say that getting them as fast of possible is the only solution we need is to say that our problem is without solution, because they will surely not come that quick. Exactly how many Nigerians have the capital to float even one of such companies right now? Or are we going to depend on "foreign investment" again for that one? Which leads us where? That's why I said we can only get there gradually, as Nigerians are more financially empowered. The NSE and SEC are already doing a great job in this area. You know, the only giant companies of today that were formed overnight are results of mergers of smaller but still substantially big companies; the rest of them grew over time, including Microsoft corporation.Then we have favourable govt policies also. Classical example I would give is that of the historic CBN's recapitalization exercise for banks, insurance companies, etc. See how many thousands of jobs that policy alone has created? Our big banks now advertise on CNN and are talking of taking over Africa and the world. Really, we're not yet there, but we're getting somewhere.

I'm sorry to say this, but another reason we won't get any 100 mega companies overnite is because of our own endemic challenge: Corruption. But thankfully too, that is being villified overwhelmingly now. All hands on deck. You're right it wouldn't take a century; but it wouldn't take six months either, or a year. Let's get the power sector working first, then we can take count again of how many Nigerians are complaining of unemployment.

Due to the pressure of work on me right now, which will last virtually all through the Easter break, I may not take u up on the "witches and pastors making all the money" for now, Kuwena; but be sure I will get back to you on that.

Great Easter break, chaps! Have a splendid time and return to work refreshed.

Please refer to the emboldened text in your quote

In marrying idealism with realities on ground, i have some concerns;
When we refer to companies, are we talking about industrialized companies OR service providers? I also want to point out that there's a difference between growth and development. Growth is in the numbers (inflation rate, per capita income etc), development is in the living conditions of the people. Are we focussing on the urban areas only? or has anyone given thought to the rural areas? Nigeria has reduced inflation to a single digit, foreign reserves have grown tremendously (i think its about $54bn) shocked, we have BIGGER and BETTER banks, but i ask, has it impacted on my kinsmen living in the rural areas? undecided, where N1,000 is a WHOLE LOT of money. embarassed

I honestly don't think that the problem in Nigeria is a scarcity of capital, IMHO i think its more of a dearth of ideas. we need to generate more value-creating ideas. There is a general rule i have noticed; and that is "Money will always follow value". Moreover, all those BIG companies we are quick to point to, never started small. They probably started in a basement, or a building for a number of years (i think Zenith Bank is a classical example, way before its PO in 2004) etc I think this goes in line with the scripture you quoted, "He that is faithful over little is faithful (and will be set) over much". Another viewpoint i think we should note is that we should start taking advantage of our networks. You'll be surprised at what a powerful network can achieve. An example is a network from this thread, (I'm sure it has been proposed before)

I also agree with the opportunities constant power supply would bring. A quick example is the number of businesses that sprang up at the advent of mobile telephony in Naija. . . . talk less of 24/7/52 constant power supply. cheesy

About witches and pastors making all the money, i don't know what to say lipsrsealed lipsrsealed . . . .their reward is in heaven

Hello, I am new to this noble tread. I have just applied for a Publication Officers position recently advertised by NLNG for experienced applicants. though, you guys have gone far with your application, i was wondering whether anyone applied for the vacancy published two weeks ago in Punch newspaper. This is a clarion call for us to join this tread where dreams are so beautiful that they have no choice than to become reality. I await your replies.

Oh, hello Yakiti. It's refreshing to have someone new on the thread. I must sincerely and formally, on behalf of His Excellency Kenosky the current Godfather, welcome you to what I may describe as the fastest growing thread on Nairaland. On this thread you are going to meet some of the greatest young minds Nigeria can boast of. You are going to meet people who work for one of the greatest companies in Africa (NLNG), and some who would have worked there, like me. You're going to meet Kenosky, Aniffy, Pak, AlfaPrime, Tommyex, Skeelo, Kenosym; and hopefully some of those who used to be regulars on this thread will come back: Opokonwa, Wandel, Adrianic, Runsaway and so on. All of them are wonderful people to be with.

If you have recently applied to the great NLNG, it means that you very likely have at least a second upper degree from a credible higher institution, and for the post you are seeking some level of experience. Now that you have applied, the best you can do is to wait for their response. NLNG is very committed to making sure her processes are as efficient and as credible as possible. They respond to all the applicants who meet their application requirements via courier mail, in order to guarantee speed and safety of all their packages. They use Federal Express (FEDEX). Part of the recruitment exercise may require that you attend an Assessment Centre at some point. There, you will face a day-long screening exercise, where your abilities will be tested. They pick only the very best, so the selection process is very competitive to be sure. But you must do your best and resign yourself to chance. Getting the job need not be a do or die affair. But of course I wish you all the best.

On this thread as well you will be welcome to contribute to development issues. We are very committed on Which Way Nlng? to providing possible solutions to Nigeria's underdevelopment problems. Under the moderation of our leaders past and present (their Excellencies: Kuwena, Opokonwa, Thought and Kenosky), we have striven to brainstorm on credible ways forward for our nascent democracy and economy. And believe me, we are making good progress. A crucial concern is wealth creation and management. We also discuss entrepreneurship and capacity building. We try to figure out what ideas we can pool together, to make sure that we do something at least to help move this nation forward. Most of us are employed with bluechip companies, and we already are helping the workforce of our nation, but practically everyone here is ambitious to do more, like we dare say you are.

Feel free on this thread because, in addition to all I have already told you, we are above all a family. We share a brotherly bond on this thread and relate to one another more like family. Of course there have been minor arguments and petty bickering, but on the whole, we all maintain a credible camaraderie, which I know you will blend into. Hence it is with great joy that I welcome you once again, on behalf of His Excellency, to Which Way Nlng, and hope you will be a regular visitor and poster to this thread. Thanks and God bless you.

Now, back to our argument on socioeconomics.

Aniffy, dearest brother and friend, you have brought an exciting angle to the argument. Yes, economic indiciers of growth, such as per capita income, gross national and domestic products and so forth do not necessarily indicate even distribution of wealth among the population. An allegory in this regard is a man going to buy 10 hamburgers and bringing them home to his wife and two children. It is a family of four, and there are ten hamburgers. What this means is that per capita hamburger should be 2.5, and gross domestic product should be 10. But what if he gives 8 of the hamburgers to his wife, and eats the other 2 himself? We see in this scenario that the children are left with nothing to eat, despite the figure showing that they have 2.5. Feel me? Yes, so I agree.

The issue of even distribution of wealth has been a long enduring one. The philosopher, Hegel described the ownership of wealth in terms of Historical Materialism, in which feudal lords controlled vast portions of land and its proceeds; Karl Marx in turn espoused Dialectic Materialism to reveal that there was a perennial potential for a conflict of interests between the haves and the havenots in any society. And even the best of economies have not been able to boast of even distribution of wealth. Not even socialists republics. Recall that 'all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others'? Even Jesus said: 'You will always have the poor with you,' in response to Judas' telling the harlot that the perfume she 'wasted' on Jesus' feet should have been sold and the money given to the poor. So the issue of wealth being distributed evenly will endure, I should think.

But you gave another exciting twist to the quandary, Aniffy. The question of ideas. It has always been a historical reality that knowledge has been a tool in the hands of the havenots to positively turn around their situations. According to the Review of Richard Wright's Black Boy, education was seen as the major factor in the success of the Civil Rights movement in the USA, that has elevated the social and economic status of black Americans in the USA today. Everywhere that people become educated, the tendency has been for the economic situation of such people to improve, ceteris paribus. With increased awareness comes a repudiation of mediocrity, and its attendant ills of poverty, superstition and disease (Cf Okunna, 1994). All these are testaments to the necessity of improved education for third world countries.

But this brings us to another issue: the quality of education received. And the avenues for utility of such education. Recent statistics show that up to 60% of Nigerian graduates are unemployable. What this means is that they have learnt so little that the industries available cannot employ them. And some that may have learnt much cannot find industries to employ them, more like the song we used to sing as kids: Some have food but cannot eat; some can eat but have no food. And we few who have food and can eat are getting bored of eating the same food everyday (underemployment). So where does all this leave us? We need more industries, but not all of them built in the urban areas. There should be a simultaneous development of urban and rural areas. 40% urban, and 60% rural: decongestion of mega cities; improvement of rural infrastructure, such as electricity, pipeborne water and so forth, and improved education that is both pragmatic and tailored for constructive development. And we need them now.

As for all these not been achievable quickly, let us recall that it took just under half a century for Japan to turn around her economic situation, and a little more for the 'Asian tigers' to emerge. Let us stop pretending that we are doing well enough. Our current level of growth leaves much to be desired. There is a long way for us to go. Let us start now and stop wasting time.

@Ken
Welcome back from the team-building sessions. Hope we get to see some of the skills you gathered there reflecting in your posts on this thread. The Easter break is really giving everyone opportunity for a cool-off, including those who had to carry home some serious work just beat deadlines like me!

To your question, well, if I had applied to NLNG together with the rest of the house late '06, went for the 1st and 2nd stage tests in '07, and joined in the 1st phase of the wait from late March till May for the results to be released. I wasn't surprised when I was be told that I wasn't successful anyway, and that's cos of what happened during my second stage test:

It was at Merit house and we had done the first paper successfully, but at the end of the 2nd paper, as soon as the invigilator announced "pencils up" I shaded one more answer. To my greatest surprise, another invigilator standing just behind me instantly walked over, grabbed my script and cancelled my LAST THREE ANSWERS! I looked at him in shocked amazement: He walked away defiantly, silently daring me to do my worst.  However, to my chagrin the same man was strolling around and assisting other candidates, appearing quite attentive and helpful. Some time later, inbetween papers I beckoned to him and, smiling somewhat sadly, asked him why he did that to me. "So that next time, you won't try it," he snarled. Well, I shrugged it off. It was my choice, I admit, cos I clearly heard the instruction to stop; just felt I couldn't let that chance slip by. Hard fact is, in a highly competitive test like that, you don't want to investigate why a script should have THREE invigilator cancellation marks on it! Was the candidate caught cheating? was he caught with "foreign materials" on him in the exam hall? Did he assault the invigilator? Was he, I mean, the conclusions are endless, chaps. I wouldn't even bother investigating it if I were the examiner who came across those marks later. Short solution would just be to lay aside the script for other "markless" ones. I guess the only alternative would have been to immediately lodge a complaint with the test supervisors  at the other end of the hall and get an instant redress, cos what that man did was simply ethically wrong.

So I wasn't surprised NOT to be successful. Simply prayed for a better outing next time, which came eventually. I got a much better package in another company a few months later. No hard feelings to the invigilator,
