Functionoftime:we used wormforce this time 2 gram per hole and it will blaster anything that comes near the crop,I think that product has to be very toxic to pull off that kind of stunt,so has to be handled with care. |

Great job! matured responses, honest dispositions With the benefit of an hindsight do you think that 500k could have happened if all had went well? 32 bags at 4k would fetch about 128k Assuming straight line extrapolation you harvested 10 times which is most unlikely that would be 256k With all the stress and high labour requirements is this line truly profitable? Already you have expended about 60k add labour cost for example 20k for 3 months is 60k Miscellaneous say 30k Factor these out of the 256k You are looking at the net of 106k or 35k per month with all the risks For me I think most farmers are working for the seeds and fertilizer companies Are there ways to make the business more profitable? okoroemeka: 1 Like |

Degis:if you can find the original furadan by fmc, which I doubt ,what u will see in the market is the furadan diluted with sharp sand, wormforce is good, original furadan is good also. |

olugbengaomotay:sometimes you will not even see the seed money and everything will go,that's why bankers don't like giving loans to farmers many things can go wrong,EG for 2 weeks now we have not seen rain and temperature soars up to 35-38+c and it's affecting our crops,we didn't factor in such crazy weather, but as a farmer we know anything can happen,it can come together and work for you with good planning, good soil and weather cooperates that when u can even see 1000% ROI. |

we are still planning how to stake watermelon while some are already preparing to harvest their staked WM,and to some that thought it's meant for only small size WM let them see oo,the balls are not even supported , which is not a good idea,we have shelved the plan for staking 2-3 to see how it goes,we are going full scale on WM staking. 1 Like

olugbengaomotay:hmm,I can't even believe what I saw with my two korokoro eyes, the melons are sack farmed with flimsy bamboo for staking and it is working ,that is the incredible part and the farmer had not applied any fertilizer except the manure he put first in bag before planting,it's crazy ,some soils fertility is just insane. |

Nice one you are providing more insights to demystify low profitability - 1.can use grow bags and pack it with fertile soil 2. grow vertical, crops that are conventionally grown horizontally thanks okoroemeka: |

You get the drill okoroemeka has unknowingly provides a great lead Distance between rows is 75cm and with vertical planting you can maintain 50cm within rows So in an hectare you will have about 26k vines Just make sure that the height of the stake is not less than about 2.5 meters I was told at a time by a consultant at Nihort that to have big balls you require a minimum of 2.5meters between plants because it's a vine Assuming each vine gives two balls and selling price of N300 That will give a gross revenue of about 15.6m on an hectare assuming there are markets Now juxtapose that one with a hard working farmer He goes inside the forest to plant one hectare of maize With good practices you will get like 4 tons Farm gate price of maize is about 70k so he earns a revenue of about 280k for his hard work I have seen a lot of this in my career life especially from the operations people Their own is work very hard and produce the deliverables But at what cost? I was an economist before I become a chartered accountant and had functioned as the finance director of a large oil palm plantation in cross river state and am now into accounting software implementation and solutions and hope to retire into agriculture much later and that explains my interest in agriculture By my calling my concerns is always on efficiency, optimization, cost containment, productivity etc etc Agriculture can only be sustainable if the bottom line is interesting

|

I saw this system of growing cucumbers in small grow bags used for palm nursery with drip irrigation, the setup to me will work very well only with drip irrigation,it will reduce space, soil ,time and increase production in a way that the farmer will have a new set growing in another grow bags immediately the old ones die off they will be replaced by 2-3 weeks old cukes,I think this is the new breakthrough in dry season cucumber and melon production.
