Appeal Court in Abuja on Friday, reduced the jail term of the former governor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye from 14 years to 10 years. Dariye was sentenced to 14 years in prison by the high court sitting in Abuja in June 12 2018.

The former governor was a serving senator before he was convicted on charges of criminal breach of trust and criminal appropriation of the state’s funds running to over N2billion. According to Channels Television, the appeal court said the sentence of 14 years for the counts was excessive especially because the appellant is a first-time offender.

The three-man panel judgement was read by Justice Stephen Adah who also quashed the sentence in count 12. The panel held that Dariye should not have been sentenced on the charge by the lower court which had earlier found him not guilty.

The court also quashed count 23 because the persecution did not prove beyond reasonable doubt that the former governor diverted the funds of the state to purchase a house in London. His sentence was reduced to 10 years for each count which is to run concurrently.
