In a bid to enforce environmental laws, the Federal Government has concluded arrangements to begin implementation of national generator emissions control programme from January 1, 2019.

Director General, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Dr. Lawrence Anukam, disclosed this while commissioning the equipment in Abuja. He lamented that indiscriminate use of generators for domestic and industrial power supply increases concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Anukam noted that population growth and economic activities have escalated proliferation of industries, use of vehicles and generators, which has led to accelerated air pollution globally.

“Atmospheric pollution is gradually becoming a serious menace in Nigerian cities, especially in metropolitan areas where the use of generators for alternative source of power supply is higher,” he said.

According to him, Nigeria has pledged to reduce its greenhouse emissions by 20 per cent conditionally and 45 per cent unconditionally. Anukam, therefore, stressed that the emissions control programme is a strategy to significantly reduce pollutants from generators, adding that it would involve periodic testing. He restated that the implementation of emissions reduction was conceived as a strategy to address pollution and other environmental issues.

They didn’t state how they want to achieve the reduction of emissions; by taxing high emissions companies and individuals or confiscating defaulters? Require every generator and automobile user to do emissions test periodically?

What’s the plan?

So they say...
I don't know how it will work out tho.
In part, will they be seizing generators with polluting fumes after serveral warnings or help owner change it? Since Power Authority are not willing to help...

They should discuss on how to increase light productivity. They should privatise PHCN at the Capital market. And not share it to themselves saying we privatised it.

hmm...

so it's true...

it is senseless to want to 'tax' people for generator emissions when the power is not available or for car emissions when the facilities to finance buying a good car cannot be accessed...

So you have not provided light finish, you now want to disturb people who bought generators? Why not go after those who import them? Buhari's government is showcasing their stupidity daily.

Brainless and corrupt Nigerian leaders. If you provided 24 hour electricity instead of looting all the money they will be no need for generators.
Watch them now use this initiative to tax Nigerians and loot the proceeds like they have been doing since 1960.

Misplaced priority and misdirected energy. Uninformed, I'll-prepared set of people.
Now they want to add more misery to the already impoverished citizens. Corruption everywhere, they'll set the agency filled with their own people and cronies, to start harassing innocent people in the name of enforcement of the this rubbish.
Why will someone run generator if there is constant power supply from government?
Fix electricity in Nigeria and see if you will hear the sound of a single generator.

Silly set of people. Always attacking issues from the wrong side. Just because it is done in other sane countries without finding out how they got other things right.

This agency has never one day recruited openly, Even NOSDRA, MINT, NERC, NGSA...
So many of them and I'm very sure they aren't short of staffs.
Could it be that they don't retire their old staffs or all their recruitments are done through the back door?

It’s a welcome development, but to avoid excessive air pollutions from generators... they should fix the power sector , thereby reducing the usage of generators in the country. If course they need to enlighten citizens about the hazards of these chemical emissions from our surroundings..
