Despite the prominent position their country holds as a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, Nigerians at home were yesterday woken up at the cock crow to the news of the arrival in the country of 124 of her citizens deported from the United Kingdom (UK).

The deportees arrived at about 5.30 am aboard flight number PVT 009 operated by a chartered airline, Plueline, at the Cargo Terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

They were made up of 62 men, 52 women and 10 children.

The deportees were alleged to have committed immigration offences in Britain.

It would be recalled that 85 Nigerians were deported from the UK in March this year.

The deportees then comprised of 59 males, 15 females, 13 minors and were flown in aboard a chartered aircraft with registration number GCO-RJD, which landed at the runway of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos at about 6.00 am.

It is noted that over one million Nigerians live in the UK with their high concentration in Southern London.

The deportees who were unwilling to talk to the press were allowed to leave for their different destinations within the country after they had undergone immigration screening.
