Nigeria's 50th Anniversary - Is It Worth It? by Ayowumie(m): 10:30am On Sep 03, 2010
With every passing day, i can't help but wonder why on earth Nigeria is spending so much money on Independence Anniversary. Even though, I stand to be corrected, is the grand style with which we are parading this celebration really worth the cause? Our educational system has plummeted, our roads are straight route to death while our politicians are amassing wealth at the expense of the gullible masses. The celebration is even an avenue for the already corrupt politicians to embezzle the fund. Why the Stress?

Millions of naira have been budgeted for State Banquet, who go chop the food? Nigerian politicians don't usually eat that kind of food. They are usually suspicious that their political rivals would poison them through that avenue. Even bottled water they don't take out of the venue not to talk of eating the chicken or beef or having a look at the menu. Concerning re-designing of the 50 Naira note, did the leadership of the CBN not know that the government is planning some thing like that? Why did Sanusi initially waste money last year in releasing a new note of 50 naira. Why is the government and various agencies not been strategic? Why the waste of money?

Must we celebrate in such a grand and exorbitant style
