EPISODE THREE EPISODE THREE “Okay… Em, Desmond.” She called. “Yeah? I am listening to you, Kike.” “I am pregnant.” She dropped and stood up, pacing around the balcony with her right hand rubbing her head. Desmond just rested his back against the chair with his eyeballs double the previous size. How could she be pregnant? He has never seen her as a person like that. Okay, they have never talked about if any of them is seeing another fellow, they just used it to tease each other and get to talk about another thing, he never knew she was seeing someone, or could it possibly be that she just had a one night stand with someone and it resulted into this? “How sure are you?” He asked her. “I am very sure. I have been seeing signs, I bought the pregnancy kit and the result was positive, Desmond.” “Wow! You can’t rely on that kit alone, Kike. I guess you should visit…” She interrupted. “I have gone to the hospital, the result is still positive.” She replied and sat by his side back. Desmond didn’t know what to say at that moment. It was hard to now start questioning how it happened, who it happened with and what she would want him to do. But no matter how hard, the truth must be spilled at this juncture. “Who’s the father?” He finally summoned courage. “His name is Fred. You know what, I made a huge mistake and he took advantage of me, Desmond. That guy is such a big bastard! He is a son of a bitch!” She hit Desmond as she spoke. “Calm down, Kike. Let us solve this one by one. Okay, who is Fred? Is he your boyfriend?” She looked away for a moment and faced Desmond back. “We have broken up. I broke up with him that same day I found out that he slept with me. Listen, Desmond I was drunk, or should I say he got me drunk and boom! I woke up the following morning with towel wrapped around me. I broke up that morning.” “Wow. That’s like how many weeks ago?” “They said the pregnancy is four weeks old, Desmond. It is a month already.” “Please, Kike. Abortion is not an option.” He started with. “I am not planning to kill this fruit God has given me and I am not planning to give birth to him and name him or her a mistake. That is why I have called you.” “Okay, what’s the plan you have?” “My parents don’t know Fred. They have met him once, but I never told them he was my boyfriend. I have also been planning to break up with this idiot for a while now because he doesn’t love me, Des. He is such a freaking annoying guy. All he has ever cared for is my body, assessing my bust, hips and acts in such a weird way. I don’t know how on earth I gave in for that kind of person. I don’t want him to father my child.” “You should have known him well before going into the relationship with him, Kike. How come I didn’t even suspect all these while? When are you planning to tell dad?” “When you finally hear what my plan is and you agree.” “Okay, I am listening.” “I want you to stand as the father.” She dropped. “Ehn?” ** ** ** It was not the tiredness that got Desmond pacing around the room, he was tired and now what Kike has placed before him seemed more than him. He couldn’t give her any response. He was just there like a lady flabbergasted after she’s been asked out by a guy. So this is how they feel when it comes unexpected? He needed time to think about it and be sure he would not heap coals of fire on his own head. He turned off the switch and landed on his mattress without removing his shoes, soon he stood up again and restlessly rushed to the switch to on the light. What should I do? He kept asking himself as he murmured. Would it be bad if he should help her out of this mess? What if Feire gets to know about it and she wouldn’t know that he was just an actor in this script. His head was full but his mind was unproductive. As much questions running around, he had no precise answer to give. He finally landed on the bed and slept off by 1a.am ** ** ** It was just 7a.m. and Mosun already woke up. She connected her phone to the home theatre sound system in the living room to play some songs while she went to wake Feire up so they could get busy. She had told her before that she wanted them to make some pancakes together with maple syrup. Feire brushed to her feet as she hit her. If she says that was the only problem of her life, she was right. Mosun would annoy you to the brim and you would have no choice than to forgive her whenever she starts making that forgiveness-seeking face. “It is morning, baby. No sleep for the wicked.” She teased Feire. Feire yawned. “I will join you, let me just brush.” She replied her. “Be fast, let me start getting some things ready.” “But wait, why on earth are you playing songs this loud by this time of the morning? Today is Saturday and we’ve got to remember some people had a stressful week and might want to just rest today but this your song is enough to wake the entire neighborhood, babe.” “This is not too loud, Feire. Meet me.” She left her room. Feire headed to the bathroom to brush her teeth and go meet this stressful lady before she would come and trouble her once more. She soon joined her in the kitchen. “Okay, let me start by teaching you how to make the maple syrup. You know you are my daughter, you don’t know all these things.” “Abeg, spare me that.” Feire grinned. “Explain it, it is something I can do too. I don’t know what’s up with this mouth-making.” Mosun grinned. She started giving her the recipe as she showed her some ingredients she brought. They were still on it when she remembered Desmond. “How far with Desmond? Have you guys spoken?” She asked. “No. I should call him when I am done here.” They soon finished in the kitchen and Feire anticipated meeting the notification that she has missed his call or maybe he has sent her a message nut she met none. She hoped it wasn’t that he was still angry with her. She decided to call him before taking her pancake. “Hey dear.” She greeted as he picked the call. “Hello Feire, good morning.” He replied with the bedroom voice. He was surely just waking up. “Oh, did I wake you up? I am sorry about that.” “It’s nothing. How are you?” He asked “I am fine dear, what about you?” “Yeah, I am fine.” She replied and there was a short silence before she added, “I am sorry about yesterday.” “Stop doing like a child, that one is gone. So, what is your plan for today?” She shrugged. “Nothing yet. But I doubt if I am going out, except I need to go out.” She replied. “Oh, no problem. Let me call you later.” “Okay.” They ended the call. He sounded okay with her on phone, Feire felt nothing was wrong again. Perhaps he could visit again that day because she said she was not going out. ** ** ** Desmond sat up on his bed. It was a short night for him because he slept late and the issue was still a weight that wants to glue him to the bed. If he should turn her down, she would feel bad and might cause her a lot of trouble with her parents, if he should also agree, what if they turn everything to reality? Why would she ask him to help her? Why! He hit his bed as he dropped his phone. His mind flashed back to when his mother was discussing with him about getting married early and not thinking of using pension to train any child like she did. His mother has talked to him about it uncountable times but now bringing Kike to the scene, is this not a big trouble? What if her parents turn it to reality for him? Or if they should get annoyed and determined to lock him up because he slept with their daughter? He really wouldn’t want to turn her down, also he wouldn’t want to put himself in a cage he would be for life. How would he father a child that is not his? His scratched his head as though an answer would fall if he did. Telling his friends would be the ugliest thing. They know nothing about his relationship with Feire, they would surely encourage him to go ahead. If not for anything, for the deal they had on ground which has been making him hide his relationship from them, they would just encourage him to go with Kike, thinking he would fall for her at the end of the day and they would benefit. Could it also be trap by Kike? What if she’s not pregnant and she is just trying to get him pinned to herself? He heaved a sigh. His phone buzzed and reached for it. It was Bayo, his friend. ** ** ** “How can I block a number, Mosun?” Feire asked with irritation rubbed around her face. Mosun stared at her. “Who do you want to block?” Feire breathed slowly as though she was trying to suppress her anger. “I don’t even know how he got my number, he has been telling me he wants to meet me, Mosun. I have told him never to call me again, I have almost cursed him but he is calling me now.” She replied. “Who is he?” Mosun asked. “He said he is the director of Steel FM and he would want us to meet. I don’t know how he got my mobile number in the first place, I hope they know I am not like some OAPs who sleep around for jobs and recognition. I run my show in…” “OAP Feire, just calm down.” Mosun cut in. “You can’t understand dear. I know this is how they got Zainab at our office. All these director people who would say they want you to join their company and pay you more and end up sleeping with you for that cause.” She snapped again. “Feire, I said calm down!” Feire was quiet. “You don’t know who your destiny helper will be, dear. You don’t even know where next you are going to in life and if this is the person God has sent to help you out. Listen dear, there are crazy men out there, I mean extremely crazy men are outside there, but not all men are crazy, not all men get directed by sex! This guy might mean a good things for you.” Feire chuckled. “I know what I have seen in this our so called industry. I know the number of backs they’ve laid down so they can become popular OAPs.” “But you have your standards, dear. I would say you should meet him and hear him out, know what he wants to say before you assume for everyone out there.” Feire gave it a short thought. Mosun was actually right. At least, Desmond has never asked her for her body and he has been loving. What if this man just wants to help her out without any string attached? She looked at Mosun. “So you said I should meet him, right?” “Sure. I think that is the best thing. If he says nonsense, block him and even his generations. That someone is thirsty does not mean he should drink from the gutter, that you are looking for higher pay and comfort does not mean that you should give your body in exchange. Clear him well and leave his side if he says nonsense. Let him know you are different.” “Okay, so how do I go about it now?” Mosun smiled. “Call him back, you are the one who didn’t pick his call. Be as nice as possible, that might be your boss in some weeks’ time.” Feire hissed. “Let’s see how it goes.” She picked her phone to dial his number. ** ** ** ”Baba how far now?” Desmond heard from the other end of the phone. It was Bayo, his friend. “I’m good. Good morning.” “You just dey wake up ni? Where you dey?” Bayo asked him. “At home, what’s up? What of Subby?” “He is here. We dey reason make we go out this morning, make we go chop pizza and coldstone.” Bayo told him. “You want me to follow you guys, right?” Desmond asked. “Not necessarily, guy. We just want to knw if you’d be interested.” He replied. “Okay, make we gather go.” He replied. It came right on time. He didn’t want to go see Feire because Mosun would still be around and because of what was lurking around his heart at that moment. He also couldn’t not see Kike because of what was going on. Bayo and Subby were his closest friends, his partners in crime and apparently the crime they were presently committing. The three were roommates back in University days but Desmond pulled out when they were done with service. They served in different states and this has made Desmond love his privacy and couldn’t join them when they were back to Lagos. That was how they used to go out back in university days. They were not fans of the belief that one is meant to suffer and be lean when in school, they opposed the motion with their frequent outing. They were like the best set of people he has ever met even before meeting Feire. Each of them has his own amusing and annoying behavior and they have been together now for over five years. Why could they be going out and they called him? Or was it a sign from God that he should tell his friends about the issue so they could advise him? These ones would just laugh at him. ** ** ** “So we should meet at Dominos by 10a.m?” Feire asked before she ended the call. She looked at Mosun and shrugged. “Who discusses business at Dominos?” “Why can’t business be discussed over pizza and coldstone?” Feire laughed. “You are a goat. I think I should tell Desmond before I go.” Mosun shook her head. “Just go see him and give Desmond the feedback. He knows the guy has been calling you, right?” “Sure, I told him.” “So, go and see him and you will tell him what happened when you guys see.” Feire still dialed his mobile number but he didn’t pick her call. She only liked being plain with him so he wouldn’t feel she was hiding anything from him. ** ** ** Feire walked towards the young man waving as removed her phone from her ear. She was calling to know where he was seated. She was on time but still met him there. “Good morning sir.” She greeted him as she had her seat. “Good morning, Feire.” He stretched his hand for a shake. “It’s so nice meeting you.” “Same here.” She gave a fake smile and shook him. “Pizza?” He asked her. She never thought about that before she went there. If she should eat of whatever he buys for her or just decline. Eating pizza wouldn’t be bad, she felt and nodded. “Okay.” The young man who is in his mid-twenties stood up and went on to order pizza for them. He came back with the box of pizza and went back again to pick their drinks. “Here.” He gave her one of the two and sat down. “Thank you sir.” She smiled. “Please, don’t use sir for me. My name is Fola.” He introduced. “I am Feire.” “Okay.” He opened the pizza and picked a slice. “Don’t be shy around me, so pick the pizza as I discuss with you.” “I’m not shy.” She didn’t know why she wasn’t shy though, but she was so sure of herself. She picked the pizza and ate. “So, Mr. Fola.” She called his name and widened her eyes, giving a signal that he should talk about what the came there for, apart from pizza. “I own Steel FM and I would want you to work with us. I don’t want to bore you with my long talks and that is why I am going straight to the matter.” He reeled out. She breathed heavy as she dropped her hand. “May I know why you want me in your radio station and… like, why?” He smiled. He was a handsome guy dressed in a blue shirt and red tie, looking dapper and neat. “I have listened to your show over and again and I love your show, Feire. I feel you are the one Steel FM has been waiting for so as to make a new headway. And I have seen your pictures a couple of times and I like you. That is why I took it upon myself to convince you to join us.” She took another bite of the pizza. “I actually wouldn’t want to do this. I am comfortable where I am, getting paid, have a lot of friends I work with, now leaving them for Steel FM where I know no one I don’t think that will be the best thing I would want now.” She replied. “Okay, Feire I understand you and I want you know I am ready to pay you heavily for this. I don’t know how much you earn but what if I am willing to pay you three times of that amount?” She tried to mask her shocking feeling. She was shocked and it was hard to hide. Yes, she’s being paid well, but getting the three times of that amount would be a wow. She didn’t know what to say for a moment. “What of my show? I have fans who follow me and suddenly just move to another radio station, I know I am going to lose a lot of fans.” “Feire, the end of this proposal is for these fans of yours to remain your fans but a regular visitor of our radio frequency. We only want you to bring people to travel down to our frequency from the frequency of your present radio station. We need an increase in our TRP.” “Same as my Roxy FM, Fola.” She said. “That is why we are willing to triple the price to give us what we want, Feire. You know what, I would want you to go back and reminisce on it for a day or two, let me know your final decision then so you wouldn’t make this decision out of hurry.” “Er… okay. But you haven’t even asked me how much I make at Roxy FM.” He grinned. “I am going to afford the triple of it, I know that.” She chuckled. “What exactly is backing up this your pride?” “Er… You can call it certainty instead of pride.” “I don’t know, I just don’t see it that way. But, no problem, maybe I would just get back to you on the proposal. But I still need to know some things.” He nodded. “I am with you.” “What are the contract statements? On what grounds am I standing on?” He smiled. “Actually, I would want you to be handling two shows on our platform. That is going to be yours and another one which is my initiative. I know you to be creative and one who carries her audience along. Then, you have the liberty to tell me the number of times you want to run your show per week, or you stick to running it once.” “So my work would still double.” “But remember, if I pay you triple of your present salary, you are going to be the highest paid OAP at least in our station, I don’t know about yours.” “You mouth is too sweet!” She grinned. “It has to be, if not, one wouldn’t be able to get the fish into the oil.” Feire’s phone buzzed and it was Desmond. “Please excuse me, I have to pick this call.” She stood up, making her way outside. “Hello.” “Where are you?” She heard his voice. “I am at Dominos, I came to speak to that guy I have been telling you about. He is offering me a cool contract and I don’t know if I should go with it.” “But you told me you were not going anywhere today, Feire.” “Yeah, I am sorry. I didn’t know he would call and ask us to meet and I called you instantly too.” She replied. “I am in the same place with you and I have been looking at you. I just wanted to know if you would lie to me about where you were.” “I have no cause to lie, stop behaving like a kid. Speak up, what should I do about the contract?” “Let us talk about it later.” The call ended. ** ** ** Desmond and his friends sat at a corner, eating and playing. He has seen Feire since she came in and the guy went to buy the pizza. He didn’t know what to do because his thoughts had gone so wild. He had to stand up and go to the restroom before he called her so his friends wouldn’t know or suspect that he was calling a lady. He barely sat back when his phone buzzed again and it was Kike. Bayo’s eyes caught the name of the caller and he winked. “We will soon know the truth, Desmond. No be one Kike dey call you now?” “Can’t I have any female call my line? You people should gather sense o.” He stood up to go and receive the call. “You have to tell us o, who is Kike.” He grinned. “You guys are not serious.” He walked out. “Hello Kike.” “Desmond, my parents have found out about it. I told them you are the one.” He froze. ...TO BE CONTINUED... www.temitopedaniel. 2 Likes 1 Share |
