Amhappy: Thank you for sharing this. Fresh Engineering graduates from Nigerian Universities going from classroom straight to factory may only be useful for technical reporting. Smart ones can be trained as operators or maintenance technician on short term. For long term engineering practice however, they have to be shipped abroad to unlearn, relearn and re-certify to meet up with global best practices. COREN is the primal enemy of Engineering in Nigeria. They are more interested in titles and professional dues than the profession itself. Before you can be called a Doctor or Lawyer, you must pass through medical school or law school respectively, where you will learn your craft and rudiments of professional practice in your field. Mediocrity isn't tolerated. But what's the case in Engineering in Nigeria? You'll be rolled out straight from University to work place, inadequately prepared. There was a time some great thinkers came up with the idea of SITSIE (Supervised Industrial Training Scheme in Engineering). SISTIE if implemented will make it mandatory for all Engineering graduates (after bagging HND/B.Sc/B.Eng/B.Tech) to undergo mandatory 2years tutelage (like law school) in the industry under registered professional engineers. They'll only be able to go for NYSC after completing SITSIE and becoming junior professional Engineers (Registered with practice license). The idea was never implemented and we are now wondering why we are here. COREN is not sincere. They know what the issues are but they are unwilling and too weak to push for legislations that will address the issues. Most of those who lead COREN today are not passionate Engineers. They don't love the profession for what it is. They only love it for what they can benefit from it. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Dothraki:is ur country Nigeria not a scam?, you should ask yourself that question first. secondly who cares if your curriculum is obsolete or not, or does their children(the ruling class) study for degrees here in Nigeria? how well you answer this questions determines how well you appreciate the topic you posted? |

Dothraki:I know u think u av made a point but sincerely, u sound like a non-engineering student. I am confident you are the biggest problem of yourself. You are one of those who believed the many lies told by ur lazy predecessors who don't want to learn & not ready to change their mindset. How can u say anybody can supervise or be among the planning team of a project? Am I talking about turning garri or frying yam project? Any street boy cannot supervise. Do u even know what's supervision? I'm stunned! U went ahead to say 80-90% of engineering scheme is design? Do u even know what's design? Damn Man.... I give up! You would av had a valid argument if u say the Nigeria govt are not doing more to encourage engineering profession in terms of internship, training, jobs, companies etc. Don't ever be fooled into thinking that the theories u were taught are outdated or useless. They're relevant till tomorrow. Go to uk, india, Canada... the way u are taught in a classroom is how they're taught. The only difference is a bit more exposure to real life situations. The theories are same ogbeni. Please, tell ur young ones studying engineering to be focused in Nigeria since u av clearly lost track. |

RealBadBoy:why do you keep twisting my word? I know people like you, have no understanding what engineering is and what they are supposed to do. Outdated? yes but i never said they are useless . So many people here who are far more experienced than you have raised so many valid point. Unless you are able to tell us what mathematical equation you apply daily in your workplace or the theory that you have used to solve a complex practical problem. Just shift and keep quiet I just learned something today, so many "engineers" only go to school to pass exam and be conferred with many engineering title without the ability to do anything. Or You are just a typical example Just drink water and he happy with your salary I will no longer respond to you again. You obviously lack common sense Peace |

Let me give you the 411 on how to make it as an engineering student studying in Nigeria. 1. Love Engineering. Have a genuine interest in it and be good at it. 2. Get good grades in whatever school you are admitted to, please as much as you can, attend a federal university 3. By good grades, I mean no less than a second-class upper 4. Get a scholarship and travel out of the country for your masters and PhD. 5. If you don't get a scholarship after your first degree, do your masters right here in Nigeria and get good-grades 6. By good grades I mean no less than proceed to PhD grade. If you can, get a distinction. 7. Publish your first degree and second degree original essay in a reputable journal 8. Patiently and prayerfully look for a scholarship to do your PhD. 9. I PROMISE YOU, YOU WILL ALWAYS GET THE SCHOLARSHIP...I PROMISE YOU. Just stick to these 8 rules. 10. STAY OVER THERE if you are not sure of a good job back home in Nigeria. NOTE: THE ABOVE RULES ARE FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T AFFORD A FIRST-DEGREE OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY. IF YOU HAVE RICH SPONSORS AND CAN AFFORD IT, BY ALL MEANS, TRAVEL OUT FOR YOUR EDUCATION. |

Hp, Micheal Dell, Bill gates, steve Jobs, siemens, Bosch.....These men are Great Business men able to identify and harness engineering Talents around them...Using them as case studies for Engineers forgeting the likes of Brinnel, ackerman, shannon, bernouli shows You never loved Engineering in the first Place ....Many Engineers strive all their lives to solve all aspects pertaining to a problem without ever thinking of financial rewards........ Do you know that the mathematics and engineering for wireless charging in the galay s10 was already invented in the 18th century by Nichola Tesla but had to wait till the 21st century to make reality......He must have been looked at with dispair that you could wirelessly tranfer power in his day, but his ideas are reality....... |

Ops, I'm a civil engineer though not registered but working towards. I quite agree with you but not in toto, we use most basic principles, the one u tag therioes calculations in real life application such as gussians elimination method in numerical analysis to design and to generate system equation to suggest the minimum numbers of pumps required at a particular point and so many areas in the field. Where the issue is most us depend mostly on what we learn in school and never bother to improve on it or how it's works. The fact is, those theories are the basic u need to build yaself couple with creativity. My issue is not giving the opportunity to prove ourselves, both government and private sector prefer foreign expatriate than home Base. |

maishai:True maishai: Bill Gates came from a wealthy home. It was his mother that asked the CEO of IBM to consider dealing with small businesses. Without this IBM would never have done a deal with the tiny Microsoft. maishai:Yes, are our schools producing these Talents? maishai: Nikola Telsa was a prime example of this and he died poor, broke and alone in a hotel room with almost every of his patents stolen or swindled from him by GREAT business men. For instance, Telsa invented wireless communication but didn't patent it. Marconni read Telsa's work, patented it and is thus, the thief is known as the father of wireless. maishai: Not quite. He actually achieved it. I've watched the documentary and read his autobiography. He built a tower for wireless transfer of energy. It worked. But it got burned down and the business men refused to give him money to build another one because Tesla wanted to use it to give free electricity to the world and the business man Westinghouse didn't see any way to profit from giving free electricity to the world. Also Tesla's arch enemy was Thomas A. Edison the founder of General Electricity 2 Likes |

The thing is that engineering thrives on plenty theories. But not the way many people understand theory. Let's say we want to build a transportation system that works by teleporting matter. We will start by theorizing on motions of particles; nature of particles; etc. Basically, we will be asking questions and answering them as logically as possible while conducting experiments to find out for sure. We need to theorize a lot as we dont know how things can go well or go wrong. Even, in the process of a discovery we ask more questions. This can be called basic science. Applied science is related to that. It builds on what already exist. Just expanding knowledge in order to converge. Now, let's say you now discover how to teleport an atom successfully, next is to use this knowledge to solve a practical problem which contributes values. The applicable skill required to design a workable solution is Engineering. Then, we still need the step by step means of executing the engineering solutions. This will include manufacturing techniques and testing programs. After you have the components that are already manufactured to achieve the goal, your technicians and artisans help to put them together according to procedures. Now, a lot of people think that the technicians and artisans that put these components together are Engineers. No. They even think that university education should be tailored to putting components together. Sorry! That is what technical colleges are for. Unfortunately, we do not have well structured technical education system in Nigeria. Other nations such as India on the other hand have these institutions in abundance and churned out the technicians that end up coming to Nigeria to do such jobs. From my write up so far, one can see that our engineering curricula are not the issues per se. I have identified these problems: 1. Many students that are studying engineering courses have no real passion for the courses that they are studying. They just want to pass exams in order to start working with multinational oil companies where the main engineering works are probably done in western countries since most of the companies are of western countries origin. 2. Incompetent lecturers: a lot of the lecturers are grossly inadequate and they do not improve themselves. Some are even in the lecturing roles to appropriate benefits to themselves. 3. There no real national challenges that force our institutions to deliver engineering innovations. Most infrastructural need are solved using contracts (albeit inflated) to foreign companies. Even our military needs are all bought as packages solutions. Our leaders do not understand value creation. 4. Our society is a 'belief' and not a 'thinking' one. Creativity is sacrificed on the alter of religion and superstition. 5. Our national economy thrives on corruption that feeds on ignorance of the masses. |

CodeTemplar: people with practical knowledge and real life examples & experiences of how flawed Engineering studies are in Nigeria are speaking and you are here spewing your normal Buharists tantrums and thrash. I got knowledge of how defective our school systems are when I went for a short course outside the shores of the country, there I met Indians who schooled us on what practical engineering knowledge is, the few Nigerians like me where just mopping at them, wondering how they acquired knowledges of such proportions within the confines of their ivy towers and our lecturers are busy scouting for political jobs and appointments and screaming "strike" But as usual peeps like you will see nothing wrong because your lord, master and Saviour is in the saddles. If for any reason the situation where to be different, say Jonathan or Atiku mounting the reigns, you will be allover the place laying blames on the duo on how they and their cronies have looted the treasury leaving nothing behind for educational expenditures! but since its the veggie- then the Students who strive hard to keep it up studying in harsh conditions should accept the blame, while Buhari is busy globe trotting, talking gibberish and BS on things he couldn't care less about, while fanatical supporters like you are busy holding brief for him while he excretes his incompetence on the good people of Nigeria, Students inclusive! 2 Likes |

emere007:I am not a Buhari supporter or party person even. I spoke the truth and I know it. Engr isn't about cramming how a particular technology works but understanding the principles of engineering and using them endlessly. Can you imagine what life would be like if your lecturers decide to give you limited practical examples in a world of plenty possibilities? |
