Local Gov. Autonomy: A Threat To The Lcda by Freegift75: 5:10pm On May 10, 2019 |
Now that the 774 Local Government Councils in Nigeria are set to enjoy their financial autonomy, as their respective allocations would now be paid directly to them from the Federal government, it is believed that the new resolution might appear as threat to the LCDAs created by some State governors but which never recognised by the Federal government. Unlike before when the LG allocation used to be paid into state account and the state governor now decides on what to do with it, the system is about to change now and the sharing formular will likely not be the same. In South west, states like Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun may be subjected to internal crisis by this new resolution. Lagos and Ogun are have 20lgs each recognised by the constitution but which had been split to become 57. The 20lgs on the new autonomy policy will not have to depend on the state as they will be earninh directly into their pus which state government has no authority over anymore. In this case, how will the LCDA be sustained? Will the LCDA be scraped ? Please, we need to be educated on this issue. We appeal to both political and economic analysts to enlighten us. |

famouscargo4u: How? This I guess will eacalate to something else. As Chairman of Local government, I cant share my allocation with unauthorised entity because LCDA is not recognised by the constitution |

In this case, how will the LCDA be sustained? Will the LCDA be scraped ? The LG dont have full autonomy till the constitution is amended. Right now they just have more wiggle room.the state can still withdraw money arbitrarily. As far as FG is concerned the states can handle that issue. The LCDA will be sustained by state if they want. They'll probably be scrapped long term. The states dont even pay 10% IGR to LGs like constitution mandates. Im not sure the local governments are under obligation to fund them. 1 Like |

What is the function of local government when local roads are filled with pot holes, where communities go months/ years without electricity? |

Freegift75:It is aimed at bringing governance down to the community. The LCDA leaders still report to the LG chairman. He can sanction them as deem fit. 1 Like |

helinues: Maybe they'll be useful after they get autonomy. The issue is they're weighed down by state government eating their money and they dont raise their own IGR. They only good thing is they dont have immunity. 1 Like
