The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has commenced a nationwide protest over the leadership tussle at the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) board.

The nationwide protest, which kicked off 9 am on Monday, May 13 at the Labour house in the Nigerian capital, Abuja with members of affiliated unions in attendance, Premium Times reports.

The union is protesting over the minister of labour, Dr Chris Ngige’s unwillingness to inaugurate the NSITF board.

Speaking at the protest, the national president of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, said they are protesting the attack on Nigerian workers during a procession to Ngige’s private residence in Asokoro, Abuja.

“Members of International Labour Congress in Geneva will be protesting against Ngige on June 18,” he said.

The NLC had earlier called on President Muhammadu Buhari to probe Ngige over his involvement in the affairs of the NSITF.
Wabba had also said the protest is not against the inauguration of the board but against the manner in which the minister superintended the affairs of the labour sector.

On Wednesday, last week, NLC members had staged a protest on the street where Ngige’s house is located, using two petrol tankers to barricade his residence.

I personally I'm not a fan of unions.

Labour unions exist primarily to protect their members but they unknowingly cause massive damage to the economy.

Look at the new minimum wage for instance. How many states could conveniently pay the 18,000 talk less of 30,000. We're the wage increase be enforced as it is in many countries, there'll be massive layoffs by both the private and public sector. This will sharply increase the unemployment rate.

Countries with powerful unions have higher levels of unemployment than those with weak unions.

Also, the economies of countries with weak unions tend to grow faster than countries with powerful unions.

all states could comfortably pay it. stop making excuses for stupid politicians.
if they can pay themselves all those hefty emoluments, security votes, wardrobe allowances, vehicle allowances and unimaginable pensions for life. Then they can pay the Nigerian workers.
Stop making excuses for them.

ur politicians should cut their allowances.. How can we be spending over 20 billion on members of national assembly in one year. that is crazy.

If the leaders cant pay 30k minimum wage, then they should make the economy 18k friendly. Abi una won kill Nigerians finish?

Nigerians are funny. They are hungry while their leaders are pocketing massively on aids and allowances, aside the massive project fraud, bribery, etc.
