Your arguments are supposed to be made by people who have no love for Africa.
Notice I put independent in quotations? If Ghana gets sanctioned by US/EU, you would crumble in 2 weeks, except of course Ghanaians have developed a way to digest cocoa paste.

You are not thinking in the other way , what we happen to swizz economy that has about 2 billion dollar worth of chocolate industry, what will happen to other international buisness like nestle and others that are big enough to employed thousands of people.

This is the reason we must welcome comparative advantage

Your minister of finance wants to reduce rice importation and totally end tomato importation among other things, it's the sensible thing to do,

Why not encourage your country to keep importing? What exactly are you arguing about?

Would Ghana allow Nigerian Cocoa anyway near its market and claim free market? Your farmers would be bankrupt in a matter of months.

Once again Nigeria's ports are opened, land borders would be open in a few months.

West Africa is not known to have ANY niche,

Importation is an economic opportunities. Ghana is not industrialised enough to consumed much more larger cocoa beans but produce enough for export and her local consumption . importing cocoa beans to Ghana is naturally unproductive just like how crude oil is naturally unproductive to be export to Nigeria. You can't export weapons to USA, it is unproductive venture. trade dosnt work blindly .

What do you mean would Ghana allow nigerian cocoa anywhere near its market? It doesn’t make sense. Ghana is a producer, not a recipient market for cocoa. If you have chocolate or finished products from cocoa to sell, Ghana could be a market. Your products will compete with other products of the same nature in the marketplace. This is very simple logic

Now you are beginning to understand,
Whats so wrong in Ghana processing and turning some of its paste to high quality chocolate and coners the African market?

Once Africa wakes up, most economies would collapse, it is inevitable IMF more than any institution knows this.

swizz didn't just become top leading chocolate producer and neither did Ghana just rose to become world cocoa leading producer . All takes planing and effort.

Ghana has chocolate industry also but not on the level of international standard. anyway that is a good development for a country that has far less infrastructure compare to swizz.

.....Most of the world's cocoa is grown in a narrow belt 10 degrees either side of the Equator because cocoa trees grow well in humid tropical climates with regular rains and a short dry season.... if Switzerland could grow cocoa trust me they would do in bulk...

Why do you think Africa was colonized??
Till today they still take our gold and valuable resources and give us guns, clothes and paper money.

Nobody is asking Africa to do trade by itself, how on earth would that even happen! But it is imperative Africa wakes up and stop being the dumping ground of the world.

Answer me this, why does Morocco want to join ECOWAS with the full backing of the EU?

You have intentionally decided not to get it.

Honestly, you aren't making your own research. or probably brainwashed. Switzerland is not producing cocoa beans simply because she is not investing in the production and not because she can't do it . To grow the cocoa trees in Switzerland. You would only need to cut down some forest and put a big greenhouse there. and that is all. greenhouse technology eradicate issues that comes with climate condition.

By the way, did you know that the original home of the cocoa tree is not Africa, but Mexico? The word chocolate is actually derived from Nahuatl, the old language of the Aztecs. In Mexico, they make chocolate, but most is for its traditional use.

if Ghana can get as much milk it required to produce in large quantity like swizz, she will have long become a big time chocolate producer. since it only takes goverment to send apprentice to go learn the best practice abroad but unfortunately, it is easier to transport dried cocoa beans to Europe than to receive fresh milk from Europe.

what africa need most now is industrialization. not banning trade. an industrialized enviroment will control itself naturally .

Morroco does more trade with ecowas than Any other African blocks , morroco has a potential to increase its growth, she is importing a lot of Nigeria crude oil , Ghana cocoa beans and trying to export her phosphate down west africa ... she is coming to ecowas to be more competitive. what is wrong if Nigeria seek to join SADA in South Africa. it is all about opportunity..

By Dario Sarmadi | EURACTIV.de | translated by Erika Körner 07-11-2014 (updated: 10-11-2014 )
Merkel's Africa commissioner criticised the EU's Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Africa saying it contradicts development aid

...Kenya is among the countries that refused to sign. In response, the EU imposed import tariffs on multiple Kenyan products effective from 1 October. Media has reported that the measure led to numerous layoffs in several African firms.

Under this pressure, Nairobi finally snapped two weeks ago, and added its signature to the trade agreement.

Andrew Mold, the UN’s economic analyst for east Africa, said he sees the African economy as being threatened by the agreement in the long-term.

“The African countries cannot compete with an economy like Germany’s. As a result, free trade and EU imports endanger existing industries, and future industries do not even materialise because they are exposed to competition from the EU,” Mold commented.

Thanks to various foreign trade agreements, Europe’s former colonies have enjoyed preferential access to the European market for many decades. In turn, they barely had to open their own markets.

But the World Trade Organization (WTO) declared this one-sided market opening unlawful in 2000. In response, the EU concluded the Cotonou Agreement in 2007 with 79 African countries (AKP countries). Since then, Europeans have been in negotiations with Africans over the corresponding free trade agreements.
But according to Green MEP Ska Keller, the EPA hurts regional trade, and does not leave partner countries any room to develop their own industries, create jobs and thereby pull people out of poverty. “Developing countries have a gun pointed at their chest – either they sign or their market access to the EU is restricted,” Keller said, “the EPA is the opposite of development cooperation.”

Lol if you actually read the article you know farmers dont have to buy the machines. India increased it's Mechanization rate by getting private sector and government to lend out machines to farmers. The plan worked without them having to shut borders. Reasonable tarriffs on rice and enhanced border security work just as well.

80% of farming is done by small scale farmers anyway. Government should simply streamline the process and consider commercial farmers. It's probably not good a idea because that's going to lead to bigger crowding out effect.

I dont see why you guys praise Maoist China's policies when you know China biggest improvement came after liberating their markets. The great leap to starvation isn't what any sane person would copy.

they just mindlessly quote china's Mao strategy that failed woefully and starved more then 10 million Chinese to death.

It was technological advancements, good border controls and better farming practices that liberated china and it all happened after Mao died.

But our dull Nigerians won't reason anyways, after all we voted Buhari, twice.

It causes goods to be expensive, can negatively effects other sectors of the economy and makes certain sectors uncompetitive. It's not an absolute good or evil. You just have to be careful about applying these policies.

Negative examples:
• Import ban on beef makes beef expensive for consumers.
• Domestic beef industry uncompetitive compared to foreign counterparts.
• Protectionism for cement industry makes home building more expensive in Nigeria.

well it sometimes becomes necessary when your supposed foreign trading partners start cheating.

Ghana has a policy that prevents other nationalities from doing small scale trading in their own country but wouldn't mind Ghanaians doing small scale trade in other people's country.

Ghana has one of the highest import duties in West Africa forcing companies to be domiciled in Ghana.

I don't think Ghana should complain of any country's protectionism

Every country has a list of banned items!
EVERY SINGLE COUNTY IN THE WORLD
You can't import Cuban ciga into Cuba
You can't import Cocoa into Ghana etc

China makes use of non-tariff trade barriers to restrict the number of imports coming into the country. As China is a part of the World Trade Organization, it would be difficult for it to use only blatant tax-based trade barriers. As such, China uses more indirect trade barriers to protect its domestic market.

You are notoriously grasping at straw, and I don't know why you are doing these. it seems to me , you don't even understand your own argument. it is unnecessarily unproductive to import what a nation does better . who in its right head import crude oil to Nigeria. Ghana didn't place banned on cocoa beans stop lying but naturally no one will venture into such trade since it is unproductive to do so. during ivory coast civil unrest, Ghana was the gateway of ivory coast cocoa beans to Europe. To ban imports from China would be to ban participation in the digital economy. There are very few computers, smartphones, and other digital products that aren't made in China.
By dominating the manufacture of electronics, China has made it's exports indespensible.
Banning Chinese products would be an economic death sentence for any country......

You can export as much as you can into China, it just must meet communism standard and regulation, Ghana just identify the place as the next home of its bitter alcoholic beverages. tax system is a soft mechanism to protect local industry not an outright banned to importers. despite the huge tax to invest in banking sector in Nigeria, there is still a lot of foreing banks .

kfc chicken are independent company from sweet sensation. both but of them can work as synergies if their buisness demand it. two of dangote subsidiary are collaborating right now.

in Ghana, two telecommunication company have form a synergy. Airtel and Tigo .... if your works and prospect demand it. it can work and better for two weak company. All telecoms in Ghana allow interoperability on mobile money .

Why dont you ask question instead of argument. it seems to me you don't even understand your own argument. very poor if you ask me.

Seriously you are not normal!
Are you arguing that countries don't protect what they produce best or want to be a leading producer of??
To have "free trade" you have to trade in something, that something is your market, probably the backbone of your economy, most likely would be a great employer of labour or a potential employer, it only makes sense you protect such (potential) industry!!!!

You are notoriously grasping at straw, and I don't know why you are doing these. it seems to me , you don't even understand your own argument. it is unnecessarily unproductive to import what a nation does better . who in its right head import crude oil to Nigeria. https://www.graphic.com.gh/business/business-news/food-imports-cost-us-2-4bn-annually.html
The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, has revealed that food imports cost the nation an average of US$2.4 billion every year.
This means that about GH¢10.8 billion (one dollar to GH¢4.5) is used to import rice, sugar, sorghum, frozen chicken and meat, among other food items, for domestic and industrial consumption on annual basis.

“It is almost not about the people importing; it is about us agreeing that there will be some shortfalls for the next three, four or five years as we ramp up our production,” he said.

Ministry of Food and Agriculture says it is looking to cut down imports of rice by 50 per cent as well as end the importation of tomato this year.

To meet the supply deficit, Ghana imports about 70% of its rice consumption requirement from Asia

I really don't understand why Ghanaians are ranting and angry about Nigeria doing what other nations including theirs have done, and are doing,
except Ghana is not getting other people goods locked up at the border

We have smart ways of solving our problems

There is a reason the Ministry of Agriculture wants to limit import by 50%, it is embarrassing to be honest, imagine importing Turkey and Chicken when unemployment is souring, the irony is it is classified as fresh food

Ghana can limit rice import because we already produce 80% of the rice we consume
and Ghana rice import is just 300 million dollars for a little over 300,000 metric tonnes of rice to offset the shortfall of local production.

GHANA CAN IMPORT ALL THE MEAT IT WANT AS LONG AS WE DONT REAR ANIMALS

probably my last reply to this kind of porous thinking ?

what liberal nation do in protecting local industries is not banning competitive product but raising up tariffs from foreign competitors which has not established agreement of free trade policy.

Protectionism is temporal solution to a long time problem. it probably creates jobs for domestic workers or perhaps raised emergency millionaire but the benefit ends once other countries retaliate by erecting their own protectionism. so such policy is very dangerous in 21st century

and in the long run, trade protectionism weakens the industry. Without competition, companies within the industry have no need to innovate. There's no need to. Eventually, the domestic product will decline in quality. It will be lower quality and more expensive than what foreign competitors produce. that is what buhari is aiming to achieve.
