The Management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, on Monday disclosed plans to build an airport within the campus of the institution soon.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Eyitope, dropped the hint at the 2019 Faculty of Technology International Conference, held at OAU ICT Park recently, saying that the airport would serve as training ground for the planned aeronautic programme of the university.

The vice-chancellor said, “We believe that the future of travel globally is in the air. It is in view of this that we are starting an aeronautic programme. As part of this, we will be having our own airport.

“We have over 11,000 hectares of land, with which we hope to achieve our objective and we have developed a proposal for the airport. We will be taking it up with the authorities to ensure that we do not only have the aeronautic programme here, but also build an airport that will serve that purpose.

“We want to make OAU the hub of aeronautic studies in Nigeria. Currently no federal university in the country offers a programme in aeronautic studies. We believe that with OAU taking up this challenge, we can go places with it.

“This idea was contemplated some years ago. Now we are very serious with it. We have the drawings in place and the land has been earmarked. Everything that we need for the airport and to start the programme is ready.”

In his keynote address, themed, ‘Diversification of Developing Economies: Imperatives for Sustainable Environment and Technological Innovations’, Prof Oluwatoyin Ashiru said ideas are abundant in Nigeria but the framework transform the ideas into reality.

Stressing that ideas abandoned in the country thrived in other countries of the world, Ashiru noted that the difference between Nigeria and other countries is the level of commitment and dedication to its development.

According to him, irrespective of the challenges facing the country, the country must embark on technological innovationand sustained support for research and development.

There is an aerodrome in the school master plan anyway.

Moreover, OAU doesn’t have more than 11000 hectares of land jare. Perhaps he meant more than 11000 acres

As much as I encourage Infrastructural development, this is a wrong move in my opinion.

Before building an almighty airport, first upgrade both the curriculum and infrastructure of your school to be world class.

Build more hostels.

Build more 21st Century classes.

Build modern laboratories.

Build premium transportation systems.

After you're part of the top five unis in Africa, then you can funnel your excess cash into an "airport" (which is still VERY Unnecessary) tho.

Building an airport costs a whole buckload of serious money...except the state will partner with the University.

PS: This new font style is making the paragraph space wayyyy too much.

What is with this new Nairaland design sef? It looks like an old newspaper.

If Nairaland was smart and agreed to evolve, it would have been the Nigerian or perhaps African Twitter by now.
But no... they choose to remain in 2006. Now, they are back to 2001.. #PopularSaying

Seun... please learn and be innovative with this site.. nothing significantly positively new since how many years..

You can even create a thread to ask for Suggestions what features Nairalanders will like to be on Nairaland.
From this ideas, you can harvest the best ones and implement. ...

Very unnecessary, I must say unless it's a FG project. What the school needs at the moment isn't a airport as I don't see it facilitating the development of OAU.

The money is better spent on existing projects like the OAU electricity project. Also, money is needed in the infrastructure and most importantly, the research sector of the university.

Do you know if the campus has 24/7 electricity, potable water and clean toilets?
How many commercialised research breakthroughs has the university had in the past 30 years?
Who decorates a rotten cake expensively with icing except a confirmed crook who is nevertheless praised by the shufferers?

What even makes it more annoying, is the text wrapping of the site.. without image, it is just fine but once the image loads, the thing go just fall words out of place.

One would now need to either pinch in or slide left or right, which is a pain.

He needs to get better software engineers. I mean I can't believe there are none in this forum.

We joke too much in this country.
OAU students live in slums they call hostels.
The laboratories are old and lacking in modern equipment and solutions.
The faculty members are not up to date with 21st-century curriculum and teaching methods
AI and Machine learning has taken over teaching and learning abroad

But, the problem is an airport.

We joke too much in this country.

What upgrade when there is little money?
How about maintaining what exists with the students working to clean and get paid as is done abroad?
