Nigeria At 59: What We Can Learn From China That Is 70 Years Old by raker300: 6:38am On Oct 01, 2019
I was aghast when I learned that China is 70 yrs old. Communist China founded in the 1940s had a population of 756million.

A country that went from the world’s poorest country to the second world power.

I saw this article from a Chinese website and thought it would be of help as we celebrate 59years of melancholy and stagnation..we can reflect and borrow a leaf from China.

Take a read:

The biggest issue confronting Nigeria today is extreme poverty. According to a new report by the World Poverty Clock, Nigeria has overtaken India as the nation with the most extreme poverty in the world - and, even worse, the situation in Nigeria is increasing by six people every minute, while poverty in China continues to fall. At the end of May 2018, World Poverty Clock trajectories proposed that Nigeria had 86.9 million people in extreme poverty, representing almost 50 percent of the nation's entire population of over 199 million. Based on the latest United Nations estimates, the nation's extreme poor are thought to be living on less than $1.90 a day, while China is making tremendous success in reducing extreme poverty.

Today, the easiest method to alleviate poverty is to create employment. As of 1990, China had a whopping 756 million of its citizens living in extreme poverty. How was China able to achieve this remarkable success of poverty reduction among its over 1.4 billion inhabitants? Simple - Chinese leaders realized the quantity of extremely poor people in the country was a timed nuclear device and decided to confront this problem head-on. Chinese officials also realized that the major existential threat for the nation was not external, but rather the nation's own unemployed masses who would soon rise up and wipe them away. How were they able to handle this?

First, the Chinese Communist Party developed a comprehensive poverty eradication plan and an implementation strategy to attain results. The plan had a five-year renewable cycle, with measurable goals, timelines for achieving similar outcomes, and rewards or sanctions for responsible officers. From the beginning, the Chinese government has owned the poverty eradication program and continues to be its main driver. The Politburo, the central government decision-making organ, developed the plan and drilled it down to the provinces, counties and rural villages. The nature of the Chinese government system makes the workability of the plan a lot faster since it is a socialist system with central authority at the Politburo. There is a nationally suitable budget for the program, which has been steadily augmented during every planning cycle of five years. For example, the budget was $41.7 billion in 2013-2017, more than double the level of the previous five years. This figure far exceeds the entire fiscal budgets of numerous African nations including Nigeria. The funds deployed in China under the poverty alleviation campaign cover numerous areas, including rural infrastructure, agricultural subsidies and discounted loans. The broad goal of such assistance is to encourage the self-development and empowerment of poor populations.

China has always attached importance to poverty eradication and human development. According to the global poverty line of $1.25 per day, from 1981 to 2013, China lifted 850 million people out of poverty, with the percentage of people living in extreme poverty falling from 88 percent to 1.85 percent. Also, a World Bank report shows that from 2012 to 2013 alone, approximately 100 million people escaped extreme poverty. That's a quarter of a million people per day, or 200 people per minute. A United Nations report asserts that China has reduced about 76 percent of the poverty across the world, making China the nation with the most people lifted out of poverty globally. This success is a result of "strong leadership and dedication" from governments at all levels, the people as well as institutions such as universities, leading to fruitful collaboration and partnerships working toward a common goal. In order to move millions of people out of poverty, the Chinese leadership made the decision to move away from the comfort zone of easy revolutionary rhetoric, took economic modernization as a central task, launched reform and opening-up, and traveled the tough terrain of "groping through the river by feeling the stones". The Chinese leadership believes in a bottom-up grassroots movement to focus mainly on boosting the standards of living for ordinary Chinese people. This can be attained in Nigeria as well.

Nigeria is in a similar stage of development as the nation is eager to escape the poverty trap and hence China does know how to deliver outstanding outcomes for Nigeria. China had experienced similar circumstances four decades ago and much of the world did not believe China would succeed. But China has proven the doubters wrong. Now it's time for Nigeria to seize the moment with China's willingness to support. China and Nigeria can join hands to march ahead on the path to prosperity. The Nigerian government needs to realize that targeting is the key to alleviating poverty, because a targeted poverty reduction strategy permits the Chinese government to identify and reach the poorest of the poor, and to provide support to help them move out of poverty. This is especially important as the Chinese government is cracking the tough nut by 2020. Also, the participation of all segments of society in China - from the government to enterprises, NGOs and ordinary people – has allowed for concerted efforts to eradicate poverty and to pursue inclusiveness in development with no one left behind. China's development provides a valuable model for Nigeria because China is willing to share with other developing nations, such as Nigeria, under the framework of South-South cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative. To turn this into reality, the Nigerian government needs a simple and comprehensive master plan designed in a manner similar to the Chinese development strategy, with specific goals and a timeline for the attainment, which in turn should have an impact on GDP and human development. With that said, Nigeria has a second mover advantage to employ China's poverty alleviation strategy and continue attaining novel outcomes in shared development for humankind.

That is not an excuse. What of Malaysia and Singapore that have a combination of Malays, Chinese, Indians and other ethnic groups as citizens?
Diversity cannot stop a determined people from development. Nigeria is not a serious nation.

communism can help nigeria.

Nigeria practiced communism when the government built and controlled industries and provided employment in various sectors.

Every state in nigeria should boast of an industry controlled by the government. That way, unemployment and local content can be boosted.

Let's face it, capitalism isn't working for us

are we really practicing capitalism? a country where we don't allow private biz to grow...all major sector like electricity, port, airport, mining and so on are control my govt and they are managing it bcoz people see it get-rich-quick venture and they steal from it which cause massive corruption in the country
SA power and mining sector are control by private sector and they doing fine
One of the best airport in the world( heathrow airport is owned by an individual(a Nigerian indeed(bayo ogunlesi)but we don't functional airport like Heathrow bcoz we don't allow capitalism

top seaport are in China but they are control by private sector

tell me any country that develops it economy without the help of capitalism?

China is not 70 years old rather they are celebrating the 70 year old rule of communist Chinese republic. China has been self ruled and was being led by the nationalists party before the country was torn by civil war from 1927 between the nationalists and the communists led by Mao.in 1937 the two parties put aside their differences to fight the invading Japanese and continued the hostilities after the defeat of Japan in WW2 culminating in the nationalists defeat by the communists in 1947.the nationalist were driven to today's Taiwan and the nation was renamed people's republic of china from the name"republic of china" in 1949.
its not the same with our country that has been self rule from 1960,China is an old country and used to have emperors way back though the land mass now may be different from then but they weren't the country we will use to give example with Nigeria.
am not trying to say we have a single excuse for not being like China only saying that as we are celebrating 59 years of independence China are not celebrating independence rather 70 years of proclamation by the communist regime

First, China is not 70 - rather, the Communist Party of China.

As regards what to learn, Gov. Peter Obi would better advise.

It is quite boring and easy for people to continually compare China's initiatives at development with that of Nigeria. It's not the same.china existed under imperial rule for thousands of years till it became a republic at the end of the qing dynasty in 1912 and I think it became a communist country in the 1940s. Nobody colonised China. Nigeria didn't exist as a nation till 1914 and was an artificial creation by the British for their selfish interests. In 1960 there was independence quite alright but there was no economic independence. Same thing in South Africa.

China runs a communist system that doesn't depend on senate and House of representatives bureaucracy. One good leader is all that is needed. That's why I argue that most of the significant developments such as third mainland bridge and all the now moribund refineries were built under military rule. Democratic Nigeria cannot in a million years do what China did. Something as ordinary as one child policy that China did won't fly in Nigeria because of religious sentiments and senate bureaucracy. And the truth is our population is out growing our development but how do you tell people to do family planning and enforce it in a democracy? If China didn't enforce that one child policy, their population would have slowed down their development.

China has 56 tribes but one particular tribe dominates with over 90 percent however in Nigeria it's a different ball game with over 300 tribes and not one really dominant with different histories so we are not really one per say.

China is a different beast. If we want to compare Nigeria with a country, India is more relevant as they have a higher population than Nigeria, they are a democracy and were also colonised by the British and with a higher population than nigeria but that's a story for another day. In perspective India has a power generation capacity of over 300,000 megawatts which is 100 times more than Nigeria.

As far as I am concerned , Nigeria needs Divine intervention. When those 10 million children out of school grow up alongside children born in IDP camps/ boko haram conflicts, it won't be easy for the country at all

All the long epistle won't change a thing in Nigeria.
Are you telling me that when our politicians travel abroad that they don't see good roads, hospitals and other amenities there
The problem with Nigeria has always been her people. Because the leadership is a reflection of the people. A known criminal and drug addict can become a leader in Nigeria, all he needs is throw money around and you will see people ready to kill and die to get him into office.
A governor will owe workers salaries for 8months, all he needs do is throw money about on election eve and he becomes the messiah to same people he impoverished for months.

I laugh at those hoping for a revolution in Nigeria, like seriously?
Sowore wanted a revolution and he is currently in jail and yet no revolution.
Nobody fixes a date for revolution, it is a spontaneous act, you don't plan it. It is the people's reaction to injustice and wrongdoing.
It's like telling someone that offended you today that you will be angry with him in 3days time.

We are not patriotic in this country, and that's a fact myself inclusive.

To drive home my point, let a man set a couple of the Quran ablaze anywhere in Nigeria and instantly there will be a religious revolution in nigeria without anyone fixing a date for it

Stop voting leaders that are brain dead.
Close down Religion that only sells hope. One across my street conducts church service everyday. I wonder if these people don’t have jobs? People should understand that success is a product of hard work, determination and not prayers.
