The Senate yesterday urged the Federal Government to formulate a policy to integrate Almajiris into the educational system to discourage them from street begging. This followed a motion by Senator Sankara Abdullahi and 26 other senators on the menace of street begging and need to rehabilitate street beggars. Abdullahi said begging in Nigeria appears to be intractable and overwhelming as beggars are now found everywhere .

He said beggars in recent times appeared to be a new trend of beggars popularly known as corporate beggars. According to him, street begging does not only affect geographical and social structure of urban areas, it also portrays the country in a bad image to tourist and foreign investors. He said street begging, had become a worrisome socio- economic challenge in addition to been a serious menace and liability on the Nigeria populace. He said the phenomenon takes a heavy toll on the lives of teenagers, who engage in the act and and are therefore are out of school. Senators, who spoke on the motion described street begging as a major challenge. The senate therefore called on the federal government to set up vocational training centres to provide beggars with alternative means of livelihood thereby making useful to the society. (NAN)

What the Senate should be thinking of is how to disintegrate the stupid ELDS quota in our university system

there is a solution already provided for that as there is the free school feeding programme already to discourage them from street begging, seem this man want to use tax payer money to kick start alimajeri feeding programme, we can not pay tax for developmental projects and you as a senator want to use the fund to feed illegal immigrants children from Niger, Chad and Mali because you want to win election, this is why these people keep flowing into the country, we know they are useful for you during election and you are helping them settle here but this should be done by by state government of your state who is accommodating them.

and for those of them who are Nigerians the government should not be encouraging irresponsible parents who do not care about their children to keep given birth without looking after them, why give birth and throw them on the street for government to train them for you all because you had scream sai baba? those men should rather be made to pay child support, that is what we should be talking about, we know how much we are paying for school fee here after paying tax, I'm sure if law hold them responsible to train their children like we do elsewhere, they will stop giving birth without plans. The only real solution to almajiri system is to remove these children on the street and force their parent to take the responsibility of raising those children like any sane parent ever.

Good development, as it has already been integrated by some patriotic northerners in their private schools. And so, government will just be their to accomplish their effort. Kudos to our Senate by raising that.
