Thank God President Goodluck Jonathan honoured the invitation of the Silverbird Group and heard the frank words of Ben Murray-Bruce on how to support the entertainment industry that can create hundreds of thousands of jobs for our youths and save them from a bleak future. And the President promised to cooperate and support the industry with $250 million. |

ocho cinco:People like you talk so much about governance yet know little or nothing about it! Go research properly, everything in USA is massively subsidized with government money. Hollywood is hugely supported by the USA government in form of different grants 'cos the USA sees Hollywood as a diplomatic tool outside of entertainmant! Again let me remind you that this $200million is a load facility and not a pa pa dash me money thingy! I think this should be welcomed by all sane Nigerians and it is well well long over due! How do you think American film producers gain acess to $100million they use to shoot just a single film? |

Omo_Tier1: lol. . .oya. I have searched high and wide. I couldn't find any $100 million films subsidised by the USA government. Maybe you can indulge me and show me all this knowledge about governance that you have. Tell us films in that budget bracket subsidised by the USA government? |

Mbeki: And what makes you think he and the FA Minister had not addressed that before going for the gala? What do you want? For him to carry a keg, go and sit at the bottom of the volcano and be fetching water to stop the eruption anytime it rears its head again. For the FA Min to drag the ambassador by his trousers and fly him to Iran to force Almajedi-jedi to other the release? What silly accusations!!! |
Re: GEJ At Silver Bird Anniversary! by yang(m): 8:59pm On Nov 08, 2010 |
People too dey lie. Why person go come here talk say USA subsidises Hollywood. The smelliest bullchit i have heard today. $200 million can do wonders on that road from Lagos thru Ore to Benin down to Enugu. The remaining change can be used to dualise Nsukka rd going to Abj. But will GEJ do it? Mbañù. . . . . . . . . . . . Rather he will use helicopter to fly all over Nigeria. Its a shame really. . . . . . . . . The problem is that most people here on Nairaland don't live in Nigeria (una jus dey answer Nigerian 4 mouth) so when some one talks about roads, electricity, infrastructure, misplaced priorities etc etc una no go undastand. One he-idiotu go still open mouth dey tell me about hollywood and USA. msssscheeeew, |

Many people on this board believe that the president just stood up an made an announcement of $200m support for the entertainment industry? the work to identify the sectors with the highest growth potential has been carried out by the World Bank and led to the August 12th Growth And Employment Pact seminar in Abuja with six key growth areas, including Construction, Hotel and Tourism, Meat and Leather, Entertainment etc. The entertainment industry is identified as one of the best sectors that will create jobs and provide sustainable growth for Nigeria. The outcome of the August 12th Stakeholder session is what you heard the President announce at the Silverbird event. For those who know, Jonathan is not a frivolous person, and he would rather keep quiet than make empty promises like our past leaders. There was a lot of work behind the simple announcement that Nigerians just heard on Saturday, and if you ask anyone within the entertainment industry they will tell you it is a breath of fresh air to have a prseident who has identified with one of the sectors in Nigeria that requires significant help! Dont forget that a few of the sectors have received bail outs from the government, and are we saying that the entertainment industry is less important that the banking sector? Let's give credit where it is due, Jonathan got this spot on, ask the world bank!. |

Woow, I clap hand fo Ben bruce dat man has a big vision , for entertainment.can u imagine.back dem he wanted to bring Late Michael Jackson, steve wonder, quincy jones here and many more artist but he wrote a proposal to the then buhari government, and they say he a civilian and Steve wonder who is blind and not a Nigerian, wanted to plan a coup, wat a fuking ridiculous statement, and what saved him was the cop of IBB which reduce the heat, then IBB blocked the whole NITEL line for 5days, he organizers in USA could not reach uncle ben, they were angry.but he wrote an appeal tp explain how things are bleeped up in Nigeria by THE MILITARY. The most shocking bleeped up was the imprisonment of The late FELA, that time for 2yrs, just because he had 1500pounds in his pocket, traveling out, the Americans were tired and withdraw the show, and gave all proceeds fo the we are the world song, to Ethiopia, Military government e no go beter for una, shame, you guys bleeped up messsed this great nation |

@PapaBrowne & Omo_Tier1 A very big thanks to you guys for taking the time out to enlighten folks here! Enetertainment is truely the 3rd employer of labour in Nigeria and that is without the support of government. President Jonathan is smarth and I thank him for finally investing in this industry, which of cause translates to more Jobs for Nigerians, From Entertainment, Nigeria is seen through positive lights all over the world (cos even our Football is suffering now), Nigerian music and Nollywood are projecting Nigeria positively to the rest of the world while employing so many people and creating megastars along the way. So if there is one sector the government should truely invest on, it is this. Please recognize and appluad a good thing when you see one. |

Why are people making so much rant about $200 million? Same money that is used to act big box movies, And for those asking how much is United States contributing to Hollywood, please they are indirectly. Like someone said, in form of facilities; grants, loans, business expense write off etc. You honestly believe a producer would spend about $50million in expense for a movie and would not write off at least a huge chunk of that amount in related business expense for uncle Sam? In as long as it created jobs, was successful and box office was high, that's all that matters. At least we know some sectors are doing just fine; Banking, Agriculture, Oil, power, entertainment etc and some need improvement; transportation, education, health etc, Please don't blame him, I support it because our movies are nothing to write home about. |
Re: GEJ At Silver Bird Anniversary! by manny4life(m): 3:01am On Nov 09, 2010 |
ocho cinco: Dude I don't know about $100 million but I sure can tell you that you searched but obviously searching wrongfully. If you want to know whether a studio received subsidies, grants etc, the first place you would look without asking is in their Published Annual consolidated tax return they send to uncle Sam. Their returns does report all grants, received, subsidies (county, local state or federal government), tax breaks, and then Their published Annual financial statement would also reflect the same thing even more detailed. That should be your project; because any company with at least $1billion in revenues have tons and tons of paperwork associated they they publicly disclose. I wouldn't be surprised if a published statement is up to 200 pages long. Under the certain states and federal policies and guidelines, you can obtain publicly disclosed information in writing. You can actually write in a letter, obviously certified mail requesting such information. While I'm not certain about agencies in charge of such information, you can start out with the federal govt agency that issues business grant and work your research from there. |

manny4life: I am aware the lower tiers of governments give various incentives more often in the form of tax breaks to attract studios to come shoot in their backyard. But I am also aware the Federal United States Government does not in any way finance big budget blockbusters peddled by the studios through any sort of subsidy or grant. It simply doesn't. And if you think I will be reading through tracts of financial data to prove a point. . . . |

HMMM, I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH GOVT GIVING $20M TO ENTERTAINMENT, BUT THE QUESTION IS, WHO WAS THE MONEY GIVEN TO AND FOR WHAT REASON? WILL THE MONEY BE SHARED AMONG PRODUCERS AND ARTISTS OR WHAT? IS THERE A COMMITTEE TO MONITOR HOW THE MONEY IS SPENT? SOMEONE TALKED ABOUT PEOPLE GOING TO WATCH MOVIES AND GENERATING INCOME FOR THE COUNTRY, WITH THE HIGH LEVEL OF KIDNAPPING AND INSECURITY, HOW MANY PARENTS WOULD LET THEIR KIDS GO OUT TO SEE MOVIES THESE DAYS? ITS GOOD THAT THE GOVT SPENT THAT MUCH ON ENTERTAINMENT, BUT I HOPE THE MOTIVE IS NOT A CAMPAIGN STRATEGY TO GET PEOPLE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY TO VOTE. YOU CAN INVEST IN THE RIGHT THING AT THE WRONG TIME. |
