Hi owolabi5, I recently bought a used car. But I have the following challenge: 1. The person that I bought it from didn't renew the papers from the previous seller before selling to me. Can I successfully renew the papers using the previous seller's details? 2. Do I change number plate first before renewing proof of ownership certificate and other car particulars, or should it come after? 3. I don't have driver's licence. Will that hinder me in processing a new number plate or other documents? 4. Where can I process these documents such as proof of ownership, vehicle license, insurance and road worthiness 5. What additional advice do you have for me? 1 Like |

Re: Car Papers by owolabi5: 4:16am On Dec 09, 2019 |
electroTech: 1. Yes, you can renew the particulars up till date with the previous sellers details. But you will have to pay all outstanding debts on the vehicle licence (if any). 2. Proof of ownership certificate does not expire. As the name implies, the confers the ownership of the car on you. However to make the car officially yours, you have to undergo a process of change of ownership after which you get a proof of ownership certificate with your details. 3. You don't compulsorily need a driver's licence to process the change of ownership of the vehicle, you can use other valid means of identification such as: (a) International Passport; (b) National ID Card or (c) Voter's Card 4. It is advisable to go to the relevant motor vehicle administration agency in your area and not to patronize touts to avoid getting fake documents. You can check my earlier post for details or call/WhatsApp the number in my profile for further inquires. 5. If I know when the documents actually expired, then I will be in a better position to give my utmost professional advise. Do let me know should you need further clarifications. Thanks sir, I am always at your service! 1 Like |

owolabi5:Thank you very much Sir. I'm really grateful. One more thing.... Is it advisable I use the previous owner's number plate to effect the renewals or should I change the number plate first? 1 Like |
Re: Car Papers by owolabi5: 7:05am On Dec 09, 2019 |
electroTech: It is better to change the ownership of the car to yours and have your own number plates which will be yours for life (You can remove your number plate when you sell the car and re-use on your new car). But if the cost of changing the ownership of the car is too high at the moment, you can renew the documents then complete the ownership process later when you have enough. Thanks sir! 2 Likes |

A Case Study on Vehicle Licence Renewal When you want to buy a naija used vehicle, always have a keen eye on the vehicle licence! Why? To avoid paying for accumulated debt on a car that was not used by you at that period in time. For example, today is December 10, 2019. I just bought a naija used car whose particulars was last renewed in 2011. I want to renew the particulars immediately. On calling Car Papers, I discovered that I have inherited a debt of licence fees for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 EIGHT ( YEARS!!! That means I have to pay eight times the current amount on the licence fee. Vehicle Licence is a permit from the government to own a car. Look at it as a Mining Lease, where you have to pay upfront before you are allowed to carry out mining activities in a given area. You can even look at Vehicle Licence in this light for a deeper understanding of how it works: I rented an apartment from my landlord and traveled out of the country for an official assignment immediately I paid a year's rent. On returning to the country, I was planning to rest in my rented apartment for the FIRST night, then the old man showed up not only to welcome me back but to demand for another rent because the one I paid had expired. Would it be sane for me to say I never stayed in the apartment for a night, hence I wouldn't pay? Vehicle licence is the right the government confers on you to own the vehicle. It is a compulsory tax that must be paid yearly. Search for the vehicle licence of the naija used car you want to buy. Factor in the accumulated debt if any to your final purchasing price. If you have not been renewing your vehicle particulars for long, remember that the day you decide to renew them, you will pay the accumulated debts on the vehicle licence. Thanks for your attention. 5 Likes 1 Share |

A Case Study on Vehicle Licence Renewal (3) Mr Adepoju registered his first car on December 15, 2016. He never renewed his particulars . He heard a stern warning on the radio from a Road Safety Personnel that defaulters' cars will be apprehended and a hefty fine will be imposed before their cars are released. Mr Adepoju decides to renew his particulars. What is the cost implication? ANSWER He has to pay the outstanding debts on the vehicle licence for 2018, 2019 and 2020 (ie Three Years) He registered the vehicle on December 15, 2016. Hence the vehicle licence expired on December 14, 2017. He would renew for the periods ending December 14, 2018; December 14, 2019; and December 14, 2020 - 3 years. If the renewal fee is 2,600. He will pay (2,600 X 3 = 7,800) to renew his vehicle licence till December 14, 2020. While, he pays the current rate on Insurance and Roadworthiness Certificate because they don't accumulate debts. Auto Insurance Basic personal auto insurance is mandated by all states in Nigeria and provides you with some financial protection in case of an accident. But is it enough? What are the options? Learn how car insurance works and what types of coverage are available. Understanding Auto Insurance—The Basics Auto insurance is a contract between you and the insurance company that protects you against financial loss in the event of an accident or theft. In exchange for your paying a premium, the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as outlined in your policy. Auto insurance provides coverage for: Property – such as damage to or theft of your car Liability – your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage Medical – the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses Basic personal auto insurance is mandated by most U.S. states, and laws vary. Auto insurance coverages are priced individually (a la carte) to let you customize coverage amounts to suit your exact needs and budget. Policies are generally issued for six-month or one-year timeframes and are renewable. The insurance company sends a notice when it’s time to renew the policy and pay your premium. |

Auto Insurance (2) Who is Covered by Your Auto Insurance—and under what Circumstances? Your auto policy will cover you and other family members on your policy, whether driving your car or someone else’s car (with their permission). Your policy also provides coverage if someone who is not on your policy is driving your car with your consent. Your personal auto policy only covers personal driving, whether you’re commuting to work, running errands or taking a trip. It will not provide coverage if you use your car for commercial purposes—for instance, if you deliver bread. Personal auto insurance will also not provide coverage if you use your car to provide transportation to others through a ride-sharing service such as Uber or Bolt. Some auto insurers, however, are now offering supplemental insurance products (at additional cost) that extend coverage for vehicle owners providing ride-sharing services. |

HOW TO MAKE AN INSURANCE CLAIM IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT The following pragmatic steps are essential in processing a claim to satisfactory conclusions i) NOTIFICATION: the insurer must be promptly notified directly or through a broker or agent where they are involved. The incident must also be reported to the police as their report may be needed to substantiate the claim. ii) CLAIMS DOCUMENTATION: All claims notified must be supported with documents that will enable the insurer process, access & and adjust the claim for settlement. It is a lot easier and less cumbersome to put the relevant supporting documents together where a broker is involved, as their expertise will be at the disposal of the insured claimant. The documents required to support a claim normally would vary from the nature and type of claim i.e. fire, theft, accidental damage or Third party claims. Such documents will include among others: a) Claim forms which is relevant in all cases must be completed, and are meant to furnish all relevant details and circumstances of the event or loss underlying a claim. b) Estimates of Repairs in accidental damage cases. c) Payment Receipts evidencing towing or recovery fees following an accident. d) All vehicle particulars to ascertain ownership. Vehicle purchase receipts in the event of fire & theft cases to ascertain original value and the year of purchase e) Statement of claim from third parties in the event of death, bodily injury or third party property damage. f) Police Report to ascertain genuineness and verify the circumstances. It is always advisable and helpful to approach Insurers or handling Brokers for guidance on the approach and steps to adopt in processing of any claim, as a lot of time is saved in concluding a claim. |
