What is Motor Third Party Insurance? This is the insurance cover made compulsory by the Motor Vehicle Third Party Insurance Act of 1945. The 1945 Act made it mandatory for all vehicle owners and users to obtain the Third Party Insurance cover before driving or putting their vehicles to use on the road or highways. It therefore becomes an offence punishable in law for any person contravening the provisions of the law. The underlying objective of the 1945 Act is to protect the interest of innocent public or third parties that may sustain death, or bodily injury, and damage to their assets & property following an accident caused by the insured vehicle. Prior to the enactment of this Act, innocent third parties or members of the public were unduly exposed to uninsured risks of this nature, and were therefore left to suffer as there was no form of compensation or relief accessible to them. How Does Motor Third Party works? In strict compliance with the enabling Act, all motor vehicle owners are compulsorily mandated to buy the Third Party Insurance cover before they could drive or put their vehicles to use on the roads or highways. If any vehicle owner or operator fails to comply, it becomes a breach of the provisions of the law leaving the culprit to penalties under the law. This explains why the law enforcement agents oftentimes conduct spot-checks of vehicle insurance papers on the highways. What are the Covers provided? In line with the objectives underlying the enactment of the Motor Third Party Insurance, the covers which are solely meant to protect the interest of the general public – innocent Third Parties are broadly in two categories namely: 1.To pay compensation in an unlimited quantum or amount for any third party sustaining death or bodily injury resulting from an accident involving the insured vehicle. 2.To pay compensation for damage to asset or properties of third parties resulting from an accident involving the insured vehicle up to a limit under the standard policy provision, that can always be extended to higher limits at an extra charge. 3.To pay for legal cost and expenses incurred with the consent of the insurance firms providing the cover in defending any legal action or liability claim consequent upon an accident involving the insured vehicle. 1 Like |

WHAT TO DO WHEN AN INSURANCE COMPANY IS DELAYING YOUR CLAIM In the event of any delay in claims processing with an insurance company, the first step to take is to ascertain the cause of the delay, and find out if the claims have been fully documented or if there has been a breach of any of the contract/policy terms or conditions. Notwithstanding the findings, from the above enquiries, the insured or claimant has the following options of redress or pursuing their rights. i) A formal report could be made to the relevant body of Insurers Trade Association-NIA that has in place an OMBUDSMAN panel saddled with the responsibility to investigate and resolve such cases. ii) A formal report can also be made to the sectors Regulators-The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) that has always handled and resolved cases brought before the commission. iii) The insured or claimant at his discretion can also institute a legal action in pursuance of their right under the motor insurance policy contract. 1 Like 1 Share |

Comprehensive insurance is a coverage that helps pay to replace or repair your vehicle if it's stolen or damaged in an incident that's not a collision. Comprehensive typically covers damage from fire, vandalism or falling objects (like a tree or hail). If you're financing or leasing your car, your lender likely requires comprehensive coverage. If you own your vehicle outright, it's an optional coverage on your car insurance policy. WHAT IS COVERED BY COMPREHENSIVE INSURANCE? Comprehensive helps cover damage to your car that's not the result of a collision, such as: Theft Vandalism Fire Natural disasters (like a hurricane or a tornado) Falling objects Damage done to your car by animals A civil disturbance (like a riot that results in damage or destruction of your car) WHAT'S NOT COVERED Damage to your car from a collision Damage to another person's vehicle from a collision Your (or your passengers') medical expenses after an accident |

owolabi5: Please I need some clarification on the bolden part. Are you saying I cannot use my old plate number on a new/tokunbo car but can only use it on another purchased Nigerian used car ? |
Re: Car Papers by Aquariann: 12:35pm On Apr 19, 2020 |
owolabi5: I have a comprehensive insurance for my car and I thought the bolden was covered? Like should another driver ram into my car from behind in traffic due to loss of concentration or brake failure, I don't get to make any claim from my insurance company? |
Re: Car Papers by owolabi5: 1:27am On Apr 21, 2020 |
Aquariann: When you sell your car, it is advisable to remove the number plate because you can use it to reregister any car you buy either tokunbo or Naija used. Also, the number plate carries your data, any crime or infraction committed with the car makes you the first suspect irrespective of the fact that you sold the car with the number plate. Thanks |
Re: Car Papers by owolabi5: 2:01am On Apr 21, 2020 |
Aquariann: Basic comprehensive auto insurance policy is limited in scope, you get a full cover on demand only that there will be an increase in the premium to be paid. You can discuss with you insurance company to determine the real cover of your policy. Thanks |
