F117nighthawk:How will one encourage local production with the exorbitant price placed on a bag of rice. Sometime in 2015, a bag of foreign rice was 8000 and local rice, 5000. What do we have now? A bag of local rice in my area is not less than 17000. Why? Why do we have to pay more for something we produced ? I don't support any unlawful act against the government. I'm just trying to say for smuggling and hardship to be curbed as regards the rice issue, government should see to it that it is affordable and sufficiently produced for the rich and poor alike |

dicefrost: But you failed to state the fundamental issues. Or is it this "If local rice is cheap, and meets the standard of the imported commodity"? If it is, it's a matter of time. How long have the border been closed? Nigerians are like the proverbial ancient Hebrews, and in reality some of them are without knowing it, so I am not surprised by all the shortcomings of Nigerians. 2 Likes |

The closure of the border was not done in your interest. It was done in the interest of some of the rice farmers who are close to the seat of government. |

Advocate500: Think, think Black man. Dont be sentimental in your state of mind or reasoning. Are north-east states bordered by countries with sea-ports? Even if smuggling take place in north-east border, it will be minimal and not at the scale of that border with Benin Republic. Its unlikely that rice smuggled into Benin or other ports outside Nigeria will first make it's way up to the point of been exported via northern borders. Doesn't make economic sense. Even if smuggled products via north borders are grown in those African countries, that is still better than allowing scarce foreign exchange to end up outside Africa. Why can't the Beninoise grow rice for import into Nigeria rather than bringing it in from Asia. At least that will still benefit Africa. |

Idiroko The Yorubas have been at the centre of sabotaging the nations economy from independence. Are they not the ones at the heart of this smugling?? They will be the first to point fingers at other, while they have been criminally smugling everything imaginable through Benin boarder. It is no wonder they are always on the fence when it comes to restructuring or division of the country. 1 Like |

TrendyNwendy: How will one encourage local production with the exorbitant price placed on a bag of rice. Is that not supposed to be one of the incentives to encourage local production to the point that increase in production and high supply will force price to go down. Except if Nigerians are not human; it's the only reason that can defy tenets of economic/social principles. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Why do we find it easy to always circumvent the law of the land?.Our appears to President is to tell us the benefits of closing Border: 1.We MUST feed ourselves. No nation can allow others to be feeding her . 2.Let's grow BOTH Long and Short grain Rice,as at now,we don't grow or produce long rice,why?-is it that Nigerians land is not good for it?. what they called medium in the market is a mix-of Short and bad-long rice. 3..Why should we be fed by Niger and Benin-Republic? and other Nations.?What an insult!! 4.What are the CBN and other Banks Financial supports to make Agriculture less cumbersome and become more lucrative?. 5.What are government measures to the FARMERS in terms of any Failure like disaster, hearvy rainfall,Bad-Harvest etc? Can the Farmers make claims easily-Insurance by Govt recommend Insurance Companies?. 6.The govt. should ensure that CBN especially should be giving out facilities between 3--5% to at least 60% Nigerians, thus reducing high Interest rates which can kill good intentions of many would be farmers. 7..What are Exporting Process made easy. 8.Other Agric Products too should be encouraged too-you just go to our markets and 'you hear 'this Is Benin-Republic 'Garri',meat, Epo/red oil'.we should be ashamed as a Nation!!! 9.Let's check Saboteurs in and around the boarders, those with evil-intensions who prefers to be slaves to other nations that loves smuggling,Amaka why?. Nigeria can be great if we want it so and determined to make it great. Enough of Office jabs, lets be practical. God Bless Nigeria. 1 Like 1 Share |

F117nighthawk: You are talking crap. I hate Buhari, but this is his best move so far. He should even double his effort by jailing both the okada, the importer and the local Yoruba Obas and chiefs feeding fat from the trade. This has been going on since independence. I also believe smugling is the reason they are always the ones to come out first to protest removal of subsidie from petrol, because it is bad for their criminal fuel smugling plans. 1 Like |

Officialgarri:Shut up. As much as I support this single policy, hyping buhari as a Messiah is nonsense. The guy is a failure of epic proportions. Farmers fared better under the akinwumni adeshina led administration than now. Most of the Micro and macro economics of the buhari administration have impoverished many Nigerians. One good policy does not make a president. Your president budgeted 5 billion to upgrade his expensive airplanes which he promised to sell in 2015, at the same time telling the South east that there is no money to repair a major airport. The only people that would miss buhari are his fellow katsina cabals and sycophants like you. He is one of the worst presidents I have ever seen. 1 Like |
