The State Security Service (SSS) yesterday, said that Henry Okah, a suspected leader of the Movement of the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) was connected to the March 15 bombings in Warri, Delta State.

Marilyn Ogar, assistant director of public relations for the service, said Mr. Okah, who is standing trial in South Africa as a suspect in the twin car bombings in Abuja on October 1, used the same people to orchestrate the two acts.

“Those behind [the bombings] have been unmasked by the State Security Service,” she said. “The perpetrators have also been arrested.”

Same method

The March bombing disrupted the post amnesty conference organised by Vanguard Media Limited, publishers of Vanguard newspapers in Warri, killing one person.

Ms. Ogar described how Mr. Okah came to Nigeria from his base in South Africa to buy the cars used for the Warri bombing. She said he had welders create compartments in the cars for the bombs and then moved them to the house of one of his accomplices and brother, Charles Okah.

On 13th March, Mr. Okah personally wired the bombs, she said, and on 14th March, he reportedly flew out of the country, creating an alibi for himself, as the bombs were detonated the following day.

“The car dealers in Auwo-Odofin, Lagos, from whom the cars were purchased [and] the welder who welded the compartments in the car for the housing of the bombs, have been arrested,” said Ms. Ogar. “Also, the receipt of the purchases has been intercepted.”

Ms. Ogar said the same method was used in the bombings at Eagle Square in Abuja during the nation’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. She said that the Abuja car bombs were wired at the home of Charles Okah, the younger brother of Henry Okah, in Apapa, Lagos.

Arms shipment

The security service also told newsmen that the cargo containing concealed arms and ammunition intercepted by its operatives at a Lagos port did not come to Nigeria by mistake.

“The bill of lading read: ‘building materials and pallets of stones with destination Nigeria,’ hence any argument that the cargo came into this country by mistake is false,” said Ms. Ogar. “Presently, the consignee and the clearing agent are under arrest.”
