Why we don’t allow skirts, gowns in NYSC camps – DG

The Director-General of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, has expressed concern over recent controversy on the dress code for corps members.

In a statement issued by Adenike Adeyemi, NYSC’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Ibrahim urged corps members to always adhere to the dress code.

“The DG notes with great concern the negative perception of the scheme’s dress code, arising mostly from some corps members’ disobedience to the dictates of the code.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the scheme has maintained one dress code since May 22, 1973 when it was established, devoid of ethnic, religious or gender bias.

NYSC has grossly been abused. It's supposed to be a paramilitary organisation. Participants are supposed to be in full kits in trousers. You would see some ladies wearing hijab and covering their heads in full during the exercise. Whilst some ladies would wear a long skirt. You can imagine a lady climbing trees and jumping up and down in skirts during military drills. I've never seen a military woman questing skirts during military training or at war front. Anyone who isn't interested shouldn't be allowed to participate, simple.
