Resist the urge to jump in and fix situations for them. Push the authority to them instead. Use projects that aren't high-risk to give your managers the space to stretch into their new role. When you empower your managers, you show that you have trust in their decision making. It's important that managers develop their own instincts and have confidence in their ideas. If a manager makes a mistake, ask them what they think is the right move to course-correct. Use it as a teaching moment. Everybody makes mistakes, and the important thing is that they learn and evolve.

It's also important to get a full picture of how the manager is doing. Self-reporting often isn't enough. Set up meetings with people who report to your reports - these are called "Skip-level meetings." Ask them approachable, open-ended questions to learn how the new manager is doing.
