"i forgot the games" i exclaimed and rushed out of the car. My whole family was going to village for the school holiday. We had done this every august holiday for as long as i could remember, mummy and daddy would spend just a day there and leave us children to spend the rest of the holiday in the village will grandma. We did not mind this arrangement especially because grandma in spite of her aging, has decided that her purpose in life was to spoil her grandchildren. She always went out of her way to give us treats. Roasted maize was my favourite, and i wondered where she always got the green maize , even in the harvest season when all the maize was dry, she still manage to find some green maize to roast for us. Of course we helped out in the daily chores. When i was younger, i often looked after the goats and sheep. But now at 17 i had graduated to taking care of the cows. I must have done a pretty job with the cows the last August holiday, for grandma had promised to give me a cow of my own.

For grandma had promised to give me a cow of my own. The next time i visit her. The next time was now, i am not too sure i was excited at becoming the owner of a cow. Indeed, i believed it to be one of grandma's magnanimous gesture towards her grandson and so i did not think much of it. While at the village, my brother and i whiled the evening away playing ludo games. I had forgoten the games in the house and was now rushing to get them before our parents come out and lock up the house. I am not in the habit of eavedropping , but as i got into the house, father said something that caught my attention and i stopped in my tracks.

"I HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THIS BOY ALL THESE YEARS, AS THOUGH HE WERE MY SON. BUT HE JUST KEEPS DISAPPOINTING ME......" father said. Agitated. Although father was a stern-faced man. He rarely lost his temper or raised his voice even when annoyed. Whoever father was refering to, must have really disappointed him.
"HOW MANY YEARS HAS IT BEEN?" he went on.
"SEVENTEEN! AND EVERY YEAR HE PROMISES TO IMPROVE. BUT YOU HAVE SEEN FOR YOURSELF; THERE HAS BEEN NO CHANGE!". who had dad taken care of for seventeen years? i wondered.

Who had been a great disappointment to him? All of a sudden, it dawned on me: i had turned seventeen just a few months ealier. Could father be refering to me? I wondered. I recalled dad's disappointed look when i had handed him my school report form. I recalled too, the numerous times i had promised to put more efforts in my studies, but somehow managed to score poor grades.

Leaning weakly on the wall i realised that father must have been talking about me.
I had been a great disappointment to him. but then. what did he mean by "......AS THOUGH HE WERE MY SON?.
I was his son, wasn't i? I drew closer to listen.
"THOUGH YOU ARE NOT HIS BIOLOGICAL FATHER. YOU CANNOT DISOWN HIM AFTER ALL THIS YEARS" mother was arguing. "DO NOT DO ANYTHING IN A RUSH. BEAR IN MIND THAT WHATEVER YOU DO WILL AFFECT ALL OF US" mother said.
and i could now hear their footsteps heading towards the door. i instinctively wanted to hide but was too stupefied by their conversation to think or act fast. mother found me standing in the corridor. "collins arent wo ready yet? she asked. why dont we just leave him behind? father said as he went out of the house.
ordinarily i would have taken that as a joke but after the conversation i had just overheaded. i could not be too sure he did not mean it. i am ready i said as i took the bagful of ludo games. i went out of the house into the car 4 our journey to d vila
