Do You Ever Think Of Moving Back To Nigeria by oldbende: 2:57am On Nov 30, 2010
The way its right now in the states, especially for those of us who still struggle to get resident documents I have been having problem making up my mind to go back to Nigeria, at least I still have some 2 Million Naira in my account, but will that be enough to set up a business?, or should I continue to stress my self every day here with two jobs that pay nothing because thisdays you can hardly find better job if your green card expire or you are just out of status, please is any one in my condition in this Western World, I live in N.C and its tough out here now.

Have you managed a business before?

Do you have links to business you are interested in?

N.C suck like mad. With $13,000 i think u should start working things out. Start doing buying and selling. Start from somewhere and u can even move to the East

i think about moving to naija, every second, but naija is not something u just rush back to, its requires detailed planning and lots of contigencies,

if u want to move back fully to naija in the next 2 years, i bet u start now.
buying and selling might be cool, since u ve the cash at hand 2m should be able to start something,

How about looking into some products being made there in the US that have high demands in Nigeria and you can liase with the company to become their representative/distributor/marketer in Nigeria. That may give you the best of both worlds.
Do yourself a favour and delete that part about how much there is in your account before it attracts you unnecessary wolves in sheep's clothing that can sweettalk you until you have zero dollar remaining there, the 419ners and all their brothers. I am not joking about that.

@Poster

I think about going back to Nigeria everyday but i wont untill the time is right. I can understand your concern about N.C, but why not move to another state for now. Texas is not doing bad economically, and you build on that N2Mill and go back to Naija later. N.C has just been added to another state i will never go eventhough i'm a citizen. N.C+FL+AZ+Idaho+Montana+S.D+N.D= no go area for me.

Move to another state before considering to move to naija

everyone i know in NC spends a short while there and moves out!

I can relate with your concerns on moving back. No doubt about the fact the U.S. and other western world economic condition right now is very fragile, with attendant high unemployement rate.

Moving back to Nigeria i believe is very feasible, if well planned.

Without adequate planning, you may end up spending your savings with nothing to show for it. N2mm might seem like a lot of money but Nigeria can be very expensive.

On my first trip I recall spending in Nigeria, an equivalent of 3 months living expenses abroad in only one month. At the end of the day, it was money well spent. However, with hindsight, i would have taken a different approach.

My suggestions (and that is what it is) would be:

1. Try and reconnect with old friends and acquiantances, you would be amazed how far up people you left about ten years ago (in my case) have moved. Sites like LinkedIn.com (for business professionals) can help.
2. I dont know what profession you are into, try and research your profession's current trend in Nigeria, i know you mentioned that you want to set up a business, but trust me, you need a form of soft landing to enable you cover relevant expenses especially having being used to uninterruptible power supply, mobility, and having a comfortable shelter.
3. With the soft landing, you are better acclimatized and have the opportunity to better understand "Naija" terrain. The naija i left is not the same Naija i met, and you would be amazed how your environment (living in the U.S.) has affected you. It took me a while to drive, i couldnt just cope!!!
4. Take advantage of your accessibility to the "other" economy, i am sure there are pockets of opportunities/information in the U.S. you can better leverage on and implement here in Naija. I perfectly agree with what @Ivynwa said.

I hope i have been of help. Just my two-cents. All the best.

Brother, if u are not doing anything over there, better come back home on time before ur mates overlap u. N2m is only a tithe of what an Onitsha trader deposits in his bank as a daily sale.

This is a true talk!

I am actually flying back home to Port-Harcourt Nigeria tomorrow!!

I am simply tired of this oyinbo lifestyle. Virtually everybody here is living on loans with bills and mortgages sucking their entire life savings away.

In 48 hours, I'll be home.

Imma pos pictures of the transition form canada to Nigeria later.

Nonsense! %99 of Onitsha traders will never have N2mill in one swoop in their lifetime. If they do many of them will not be running or killing to hold a political office.

Go! You will be back, have seen many like you in the past 2 years that went back to Nigeria only to face the reality. Truth is, if you have been living in the west for a while it takes a great deal of patience and endurance to live in Nigeria. Not to talk of not having a reliable job to illiterate politicians in the government house. I was in Ibadan in 2005, 2006 and 2008. All the roads and infrastructures that were messed up were still there for all those years. I was in Ibadan this past August (2010), the same roads are still in the same conditions and even worse. I'm sure the Governor, the commissioners etc. has passed thru these roads and see that it needs fixing but they turned a blind eye to it. My brother, change your state and build that N2mill into like N10mill then go home. The people that will come for help knowing that you just came to Nigeria will ask for more than N2mill. That is Naija mentality, they think they can get money from you if they beg hard enough for it.

It depends on how long he has been in the states. . i moved back to naija after 5years, and didnt like it, worked for about 2yrs and now im back in the US. . while i know other people that have gone, and would never want to move back here. . .so people are different!.
Good, i stay in ibadan also and know what you mean. .Oyo State's case is different, the clueless Governor, cannot be compared to a state like lagos. Visit Lagos every year and im sure you will see advancement!,
About the OP i suggest he stays in the US, going to Nigeria should be the last option, he can try 1-2 states before moving to Nigeria. The east coast will be a good choice or texas.
I dont know how he can turn 2mill to 10mill o! in yankee, if really he decides to go back he should follow the advices of ysg4real. .imo
But really 2mill is small money in naija, it will go in less than a year!

Honestly speaking I understand what you are trying to say, and many have said the same but I beg to differ. I am not fooling myself with the belief that I am going back to utopia, NO! But I know where I came from and I know how the system works. I am going back to bad roads, terrible power supply, corrupt police, insecurity, militancy (since I'm going to port-harcourt), e.t.c.

But I still believe in that country, Canada was like a dream for me. I was surprised when I got my citizenship but still I want Nigeria. A place where I am celebrated and not tolorated. Where people dont see me as that balck man. Where nobody feels they are superior to me just cause my skin colour is different, where I'm not profiled cos I'm a black man living in a high brow neighbourhood.

Also I just got a good job offer that would give me a good career advancement. I know it wouldnt be easy, but I know I would eventually grow to love it. I can always visit Canada whenever I want and my kids would get good free education here but I would go home and make a big difference in my life.

O and dont worry bout people coming to mooch off me cause I really dont think I roll with those kind of peeps! Moreover "I'm sorry I came home with nothing" isnt a crime! grin

I'm sre I would have fun back home, I'm already dreaming of the taste of Isi-ewu and Star in my mouth already.

Just wish me a safe flight! I'mma put up pictures of Port-harcourt later on!

Don't discuss any matter that you know nothing about ok. I can assure you that an average Onitsha busiman at Main Market (Otu-Onitsha) or Electro-Mart makes more 5m on a daily basis. This is very clear there because most of them are major importers of electronics, textile, shoes and so many other items and their customers spans all over Nigeria and beyond. So its common to say that Onitsha bizman can pay 2m as a tithe,
Re: Do You Ever Think Of Moving Back To Nigeria by hugooh42(m): 3:30pm On Dec 01, 2010
Well 2million is big and it's equally small. But if well invested in Naija within a short space of time you will be swimming in millions. If you can go into importation, especially from China. You can make it with that amount.Best of luck.

Let's break it down a lil,shall we

* If you don't own a house & don't intend to continue living with your folks (don't even think of squating with frnds):A nice modest apartment-N150,000 a yr (pay for 2yrs plus agency)& ofcourse you'd want to furnish it.
* Generator-N200,000
* Air con if you're residing in Eko or Abj - N45,000
* Do u need a car (if you havn't got 1) no comment
do the math & see where your 2 mill leaves you

Whoever want to come back to Naija, pls let no one discourage them. When i told my friends that i was leaving England for Nigeria, they thot i had gone bonkers. Yes, it wasnt completely smooth sailing but then, i am enjoying being back home. It makes a whole lot of differences. One can always make it back home if one is a goal-getter, dedicated and determined.

One of the best advice on here IMO. Poster think hard - 2 mill will get you no where in naija today. Either work harder and save up, or look at your other options in other states here. Its not easy to make it here (contrary to popular belief), but hard work and endurance will definitely go a long way.

All the best.
Re: Do You Ever Think Of Moving Back To Nigeria by Rotwale: 4:32pm On Dec 01, 2010
I have learnt in life that a man only becomes what he thinks of himself. if you think life's going to be difficult coming home, so will it be.

I like the spirit of Okija_Juju - he seemed like he's counted his cost and knows why he want to come home. Same goes to the poster, if you really want to return home, take a stand on that and get yourself to MMA as soon as you are ready to face it. You must be ready to face those difficulties identified by other posters. You must be prepared in case you fail in your alternate plans. You dont fear failure, you face it - because it may come your way (it's the bitter truth).

I'll add that you don't get back to Naija because the respondents to this thread have successfully given you a reason(s) to come home - you may live to regret it, too bad.

Rather take a firm decision on why you want to come home and be ready to face the worst that could happen to you as a result of your decision.

All the best

my friend I work in the telecom industry in naija, with that kind of money u can invest in the distirbution of recharge card and accesories,u can easily become an stp(sub-trading partner) with one of the major tp(trading partner) .There is money in this industry if really have money to invest into it.it a win-win industry.

Re: Do You Ever Think Of Moving Back To Nigeria by Nobody: 9:44pm On Dec 01, 2010
@Poster.I understand your dilemma but truthfully your post reeks of ignorance, pls take no offence.I live in Nigeria and I am into business and to speak the truth 2mil is MORE than enuff to invest with here.Depending on what you invest in you could earn (realistically) btween 100,000-10mil monthly(this is also dependent on maturity per investment). From your post it's obvious you're in d U.S. to make some quick doe which 'unsurprisingly' isnt your experience. To tell you the truth, the best moving to another state will do is offer higher pay and probably better conditions. To be comfortable however, you need to be a keen observer of market trends(in Naija or Yankee)and then invest accordingly.
