Misuse Of The Word "INVENTION" by the Nigerian Press by shadeyinka(m): 4:15pm On Jan 10, 2020
From the report:

It is appalling the misuse of the word INVENTION by the average press report in Nigeria. This is a direct result of the exposure students get at their secondary school. The average non science student know virtually nothing about science hence the blunders when they make such reporting a.

Left to me, every student in secondary school must be made to do the following subjects irrespective of their choice of vocation.
1. Maths
2. English
3. Physics
4. Chemistry
5. Biology
6. Accounting
7. Economics
8. Literature
9. Government
10. History
And one or two optional subjects like French, Fine Arts, Technical Drawing, Agriculture, Vocational Skills

At Entrance Examination to the Higher institution, exams should then be limited to the FIVE basic courses. Then, the average science/engineering student will have some ideas of the Arts, Humanities and Accounting. While the Arts and Accounting student will have a fair idea of science.

My observation:
1. Celebrating Invention is different from celebrating Innovation or fabrication

invent
/ɪnˈvɛnt/
verb
create or design (something that has not existed before); be the originator of.
"he invented an improved form of the steam engine"

innovate
/ˈɪnəveɪt/
verb
make changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.

fabricate
/ˈfabrɪkeɪt/
verb

construct or manufacture (an industrial product), especially from prepared components.
"you will have to fabricate an exhaust system"

A Fabrication may be of one's own design. A Fabrication may even have one or two innovations embedded in it BUT it doesn't make an invention.

When the foundation isn't right, nothing of value can stand on it

Big Inventions are not easy to come up these days.... Innovations also help startups boom and even the biggest companies are struggling to invent something... I can relate with the press wrong usage of the word.. wink
