In this country, i think its better to steal very big money so that your jail term will be small or just pay fine, rather than stealing small money and get 20years jail term without option of fine

Because they were armed while committing the crime. Toy or real gun would have had no difference. They succeeded in robbing their victim. The intent to commit and committing same is a crime and a felony. The court is right herein.

God will punish the judge for this case. When those stupid politicians steal the money meant for the citizens they don't sentence them this much, now because of 2000 they sentence him to 21 years. Judge your children will suffer for it in future

lolz, if that's what the law says, then it has to be repelled.

Yes, that's the law. Armed robbery (guns, knives, cutlass, etc) attracts death sentence

“He (counsel) raised the issue at the hearing of the appeal, but there is no ground of appeal, challenging his (appellant’s) sentence, therefore, there is nothing this court can do or say on the issue of his sentence.

I believe the lawyer is to blame as the lawyer NEVER appealed the excessive sentence. Besides, he still have a chance to have a lesser sentence if he gets another competent lawyer to appeal the sentence.

Re: Femi Ayoade: Supreme Court Affirms 21-Year Sentence For Man Who Stole N2,000 by teemy(m): 9:03am On Feb 04, 2020
The judgement was not about the amount stolen but the way the crime was carried out. Stealing or ordinary robbery has a low sentence but when 'armed' even if it is with ordinary stick, he is liable to a capital sentence. The Judge was being lenient by not sending him to the gallows.

The objectivity of the whole thing is that being armed with a weapon give a higher probability of causing bodily harm to the victim as well and possibly cause death. This is an old law that was created during the military era to eradicate armed robbery. I don't think based on current happenings that it would be repealed any time soon.

Don't ever use violence in carrying out crime. Even in the US, a carjacker can get a life imprisonment for stealing a car while holding a gun while a hacker who steals $20 million may get just 7-10 years.
