National Identity Number (NIN) is now a compulsory requirement for SIM registration according to new policy given by the Federal government of Nigeria to Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). A cap of three phone lines has been set for Individual mobile subscriber in Nigeria. This directive was given by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isah Pantami. The Minister also directed the NCC to revise the usage and SIM card registration policy to effectively capture the necessary data. What is the new policy? FG said the policy was based on the need to combat the spate of insecurity in Nigeria. The new policy is paraphrased below for easy understanding. 1. The NIN would be a compulsory requirement for new SIM card registration in Nigeria. 2. There would be a cap on the number of mobile phone lines that an individual could obtain and register. 3. All registered SIM cards are to be updated with the NIN before December 1, 2020. 4. Passport and Visa numbers are requirements for foreigners to register SIM cards in Nigeria. How this will go down with over 100 million mobile subscribers in Nigeria when the new policy takes effect remained to be seen. However, it would be a welcome development if it can go a long way in curbing the spate of insecurity in Nigeria. The difficulties of registering a new SIM card and updating existing mobile lines with NIN would definitely be a big concern of many Nigerians. How do you feel about the new Policy? |

IduNaOba:It is true, just the same way they reversed Bank Verification Number (BVN) abi? Mumu. If you like don't go and get you NIN number, in a few years no Nigerian will be without one, it functions just like the Yankees social security number, these are the little things that made the Yankees place the migration ban on us, you must know your citizens. |

Blue3k:So what are you implying the Government, shouldn't even bother?Mind you VOIP, has a unique address, that can easily be tracked, it is the FBI that will help The Nigerian Government unlock the code, and grab you and your criminal brethren. |

blacknp: The same FBI that's yet stop the billions of robocall scams in their own country? Ok cool glad they're on board. VOIP can be tracked like sims but it will do little to nothing curb the crime. Sims should be easier to track than millions of randomly computer generated numbers.
