Nigerians, here we go again.
First, it was cure for HIV.
Then Ebola.
And now for Coronavirus.... And when they will produce that cure it will be some Alomo Bitters. I'm sure it is the one below that Ewure is talking about.
We are our own problem, if it was one oyinbo that said he has found the cure to the virus, everyone will be jubilating whether it is true or not. But because he his a Nigerian, we are rubbishing his claim without giving him benefit of the doubt. Now tell me, how can Nigeria become a better place that we are clamouring for without supporting our own? The rate at which we devalue ourselves and the country on this platform and other social media is disheartening. We want to be respected in other countries but we disrespect ourselves and our country. We do an unnecessary comparison and say disdain things about the country everyday. You all have forgotten that every country has its own challenges, which ranges from corruption, terrorism, unemployment, poverty, poor health facilities, electricity problem, bad internet and many more. You will not know because those countries with such problems don't go online and expose their problems. But they are seeking for solutions instead of degrading themselves and their countries. Until you go to other countries and mingle with other nationals before you can understand this.

I'm not sure of Corona virus treatment, but I'm sure of HIV/AIDS treatment, fortunately or unfortunately I will not divulge it to any one, I don't want people to be going around fucking up and down because there's cure for HIV

You know what is up bros!
Exactly.
It isn't the job of government to fund a drug discovery venture, it is the big Pharma companies who will be able to spread the discovery through out the world. But Iwu knows he has found nothing, but he still wants to throw some words together to confuse and deceive the President into releasing money to him that will never be accounted for.

I'm happy many Nigerians are seeing through their lies.

why do you Yorubas claim to be educated? when it's obvious that you're only educated illiterates.

Government fund research and help with parents of the discovered compound.

You people always exposing your level of stupidity, ignorance, foolishness, and illiteracy.

You people should try to get some information before criticizing informed people.
Each country has properly grounded procedure for discovering new lead compounds (you only call it drug after it has received regulatory approval to be used in the society).
The first stage is benchwork which takes place in laboratories at the universities, research institutes, and pharma and biotech industries.
Once a promising compound is found, derivatives are synthesized and patented to protect the invention.
After this the researcher applies to the regulatory body in the country, FDA in US, MHRA in the UK, and NAFDAC in Nigeria, and informs the body of its desire to commence preclinical testing in animals. A case file is opened for this purpose by the NAFDAC and all data are meant to be filed in so that the regulatory body can monitor and trace both the toxicity (safety) and effectiveness (efficacy) of the compound in question. Once the compound successfully goes through testing in animals, it receives approval for commencement of testing in humans, called clinical trials. This happens in four phases, each phase having subphases sometimes. At the end of Phase III, if the product has performed well it is granted marketing authorization for sale to the society, after which a more extensive phase IV clinical trial (post-market surveillance) takes place.

Government involvement in the process is managed by NAFDAC. If your discovery is worth its onus it is the Big Pharma companies that you need to talk to for sponsorship, and not a broke government like Nigeria that cannot afford the cost of developing a new cure which is estimated to cost about $1.3 billion.
The role of any government, include WHO, is mainly administrative, and to subsidize the final product discovered to make it urgently available to people across the globe. It is very irresponsible for any government to use political fiat to release funds for the purpose of a prospective and highly unlikely invention Prof Iwu thinks he has discovered.

He claims to have made a discovery and yet he could not point to a single scientific article where that discovery has been published. Voodoo scientists everywhere in my beloved country.

Oga think before you comment.
So you expect them to run straight to WHO without passing through the Federal government.
The Federal government need to experiment the cure to ascertain it's efficiency before calling on WHO to finalize it.

You are a very funny person. You did not understand the point.

When I heard of the coronavirus entering Nigeria, actually, Prof. Maurice Iwu came to my mind.

What he is talking about is that his treatment which he believed would work against Ebola which he patented in 2015, he believes will work on coronavirus from his study.

Maurice Iwu is actually an eminent Professor of Pharmacognosy.

Pharmacognosy deals with the research / production of medicines from plants and other non-chemical sources.

Yorubas are simply angry because iwu is not Yoruba.

We don't care about them Yoruba ooo.

He said the institute identified and patented the possible COVID 19 treatment in 2015 and now needs the Federal Government’s support to translate the compound into a drug for the treatment of the virus.

Is this man a clown?

He patented a treatment for a disease he believes would work against Coronavirus.

Understand?

Bros, it is another means to siphon money. I can bet anyone on that. This set of people are only interested in profiting from human miseries, just the same way they are reaping in profits from Boko Haram, they are already ganging up again to rake in billions on the occasion of coronavirus.

U sabi something, my guy... A friend of mine who did youth service in one of the military base narrated how these generals constantly share millions on this boko haram issue. I'm only pained at the innocent citizens losing their lives on this course.

Let me shock you.
Corona Virus is not new in the science world.
It has been predicted many years ago.
A number of people in the know have been researching.

Specifically , Coronavirus was predicted in a novel called the 'Eye of Darkness's written in 1981.

Do away with your inferiority complex. No one is comparing colours right now. Science and technological innovations are founded solidly on a foundation of criticism. I work as a full time researcher in Europe, and it's the same way all over the world. The first foot forward in science is doubt. I realize how difficult this is for you, and people who are daily fed with the need to believe what they haven't proven. When we make any discovery here in my group I require the research assistants to repeat the procedure over and over again until we are 99% certain that the results are invariably reproducible and that we understand the data. We don't just rush out to start making claims. Even after putting our house in order with respect to ascertaining the reproducibility of the experiment, we communicate the data to other scientists from other centers and from other countries in conferences and symposia. God knows I have been to many of those to present our findings in different parts of the world. And yes, scientists are specially trained to criticize and scatter your claims and at the end only the logical result will stand. This is the way of science, and drug discovery is a scientific engagement.
This has nothing to do with color or being Nigerian. I have been invited to deliver several talks in Nigerian institutions from different parts of the country, and what I have also noticed is that (some, maybe many) Nigerian scientists doctor data too much. A number of them are dishonest with their claims, and by the time I start critiquing their claims they start getting angry and emotional about it.
There is not where in the world where a professor, who should have known better, would come out and make ridiculous claims like this, and the largely pseudo-educated citizens will believe it is their nationalism duty to support such unproven claims...except Nigeria. And it shows how many of you are suffering from a colour-induced inferiority complex. You are so so eager to believe that a major discovery can come from the chaotic and visionless research environment in Nigeria.
No, it will not come. You can not reap where you have not sowed. No Nigerian laboratory can boast of a single NMR machine, x-ray synchroton or any other decent equipment to do a structural characterization of the smallest molecule. For that, Nigeria lecturers have to spend millions of money from their own meagre resources to come to Europe and US to collect the flimsiest data possible. And the Nigerian government refuses year in year out to fund research and technological development. You guys say nothing about that, but you are foolishly eager to believe that a major discovery of this calibre will come from your agbos and ogogoro-soaked ewedus. Wake up, no one cares about your colours. God knows I have met several Nigerian and black scientists making major discoveries around the world... The most recent discovery of a drug for sickle cell disease was led by a Prof Martin Safo, a Cameroonian but based in the United States. Bring people like this to Nigeria to work and they promptly wither, because the Nigerian research environment only pays lip service to technological advancement. Ask your Buhari, or Jonathan, or Yaradua, or Obasanjo how much exactly they have invested in research... and stop your embarrassing display of mischief seeking to turn everything with a tribal/racist sentiment.
