Thanks, I knew this was illegal, they make you drag someone over for donation.

No sane country does this.

The 7,000 you paid is for blood screening and cross matching.

Nobody sold your blood. your blood was simply used for another person that was in need of blood and the person will also replace the blood before leaving the hospital.

You don't mean it! So the hospital will give you blood today because you need it and ask you to donate it back few weeks after when you have recovered?

You want to tell me people who need blood in private hospitals don't rush to general hospital to buy blood .

You must be one of the people that benefit from this clandestine practice.

The problem is that there's shortage of blood in the blood bank. People in dire situations need to be given blood urgently but our society us not enlightened enough to understand that blood donation is healthy and a form of social responsibility/civic duty.

There must always be blood at hand for pregnant women who are due for delivery and surgical cases. Sometimes it's a life and death issue. I hope this will not lead to maternal deaths.
You striked the point jare, thumps up!!!

It is a great development, to make the hospital not withold treatment.
However, we need a better system to encourage blood donation. People don't donate more because of the mindset that it will be donated for free, and later SOLD to patients who need them.
.
I know that the hospitals incure cost in running operations, but we all don't have to pay cash for healthcare.
We need to subscribe more for health insurance, not wait till we are in dire need of medical attention. If you had a proper health insurance in place, you will not be asking about how much you incured as medical bills...most of the time.

There is nothing good in that development.

I have used lagos state hospital for 3 births and i know the importance of that policy.

Lagos state government hospital policy is that you do not discharge any woman with pcv of less than 28%
As for babies,if your pcv is less than 40%,you will not be discharge. A bllod transfusion must be done.

how do they follow up with that policy when there is no adequate blood in the blood bank?

The same people who do not want to donate also not pay insurance premium because if they do not fall sick for that year, the money they paid is gone, That is the mindset

Donation of blood is not bad at all. But this same hospital sells this blood to others at exorbitant prices. That's where the problem is. Imagine my husband donating blood for me and I was lucky not to use it but another patient was in need and they sold it at the rate of 15k. That something they got for free . Now where is the money going to?

I worked with LSBTS LAGOS STATE BLOOD TRANSFUSION SERVICES 2014-2016 and I can tell you, there was always shortage of blood
Not like lagosians willingly walk in to donate blood or when we go for blood drives we get that much
In fact it is the Muslim and indian community that really donate. U see we Christians eh, anytime we attend any church na so so back tracking the members go dey do like say we wan drink their blood

Very good! Forcing people to donate blood against their will, and then turn around and "sell" the same blood for people who need it, under the stupid excuse that the blood is "free" but you pay for "SCREENING ", screening @ around 12 to 15k. Bloody rogues!

I hope they won't start paying through their noses.

We don't want to donate anything yet we want the same service or commodity to be available.
We sure love miracles. grin
The problem may even not be the pay but the availability of blood when urgently needed, especially if it is a rarer type of blood group.
I believe It's not the pregnant women that donate these blood. Lagosians should willingly be donating blood in the banks for unforseen circumstances.

Have you spoken to your LASHA lawmaker about it?
Are you working with other Lagosians to have better controls over blood donations in the government hospitals?
If you are not working on these bothersome community issues, like SERAP is doing, who do you expect to do the work?

So because of these reasons, families of women giving birth must be blackmailed to donate blood? Where have you seen such stupid policy in the history of mankind? The scam about the whole thing is that the blood that is extracted through blackmail is sold to those who desperately need it.

I hope this law applies to private hospitals... I know someone who paid for 2 pints of blood in Faith Hospital Benin City and didn't use the blood and they didn't refund the money. If u see the way they went about collecting the money. They refused to deliver the lady. They collected the money like they were fraudsters with so much desperation. The annoying thing is, the hospital is owned by a church!...owned by late Benson Idahosa. Religion is ...well let me not call it a scam cos of these lots... Christians make una de fear God.

Congrats to d judge. Extend to the whole oh Nigeria , I beg

The judge is viewing the whole issue from a neutral point of view hence the reason for his decision..

There are some things u won't judge right unless you are in such environment. The whole idea will seem wrong and illogical to you. no matter the level of argument you will hold on to your views which you believe to be the best..

Firstly normal labour is a diagnosis in retrospect that is, u can't be 100% Confident that a labour will go smoothtly until the end of the labour and sometimes after 24hrs. Vaginal delivery is unpredictable let alone cesarean section.

Secondly, the blood bank needs to be rich. Nigerians don't have the habit of donating without being compelled. If u wait for every case to go bad before rallying round for blood, you might not get enough blood needed and the required compatible blood.
I have screened 3 patients relatives who visited the hospital for donation while we were in deer need of blood.
2 of them had hepatitis B and the third was HIV positive. They had to go look for other donors.

There are many preventable deaths owing to lack of blood. The doctor gets helpless and watch the patient die. If blood is stored in the bank, anybody can have access to it when needed and compelled to replace.

What I think should be done is that, after donating and paying for screening, if the patient ends up not using the blood, the screening fee should be refunded and paid by whoever ends up using the blood
hospital should pay for willing donors then sell the blood like they normally do

Paying through their nose is not even the issue, the issue is availability of blood.

What is they have the money and need 6 pints if blood urgently and the blood is nowhere to be found?

Any body that applauds this judgment does not know how many women and children died due to non availabilty of fresh blood.
people have been given birth safely since the beginning of the world without blood

Hello, if we donate freely, is it going to be given free or with little charge? I only ask d question I know it is still d same whether you buy or donate. That is d only reason people are care free. You collect freely and you sold it at #10 000!
I don't think any hospital sells blood per se .
The money paid is meant for screening of the blood .

I'm sure SERAP and the judge didn't even understand the concept of blood donation in our public hospitals before passing their judgement.

It's another useless judgement that won't fly at the end of the day

Gbam! Simple law of demand and supply. If the price is right, some people would make a career of selling their blood. In the West some people sell their sperm to various sperm banks to get by.

What do you say of a situation where someone's husband donates blood and still paid ₦7000. At the end of the day, the woman was delivered of her baby and never needed blood transfusion. Money was not refunded, and donated blood would have used for someone else. This happens in Island Maternity.
You are right.
However, there is usually little or no blood in the blood bank due to the excessive demand for blood donations from these hospitals. I can't talk for any particular hospital but the one I know.
What if you relative delivers, had post partum haemorrhage and require blood transfusion for which the bank has non at that time? It will take nothing less than 2 hours to get donors, screen them, bleed them, compatibility testing before the blood gets to your patient. And that of course is mortality waiting to happen.
The 7k is for the screening and other tests done.
If they give you back you blood, what will you do with it?
Now this brings me to the next point you raised and which I think it's where SERAP should have focused. Why will the next patient still pay 7k in some facilities for the same blood when the compatibility is all that is needed to be done? Since someone has already been screened and has donated.
The court should not throw away the baby with the bathing water. This has been a very life saving process. It need thorough review not to be totally stopped.
SERAP should better be ready to get immediate donors for those PPH mothers or their death is on them.
This judgement was an erratum in totality.

Hian hope this wont lead to shortage, even with all the you must donate by pregnant women spouses theres still shortage.

When you get someone to donate its assured when you need you must surely get at least thats what they say at the hospitals

Lots of people donate and end up not having to use blood but its available for those who need it later and they will also donate to replenish the bank.

And the money you pay is for blood screening not necessarily for the blood.

I used lagos hospital for childbirth and I have seen the katakata this blood issue can cost, money will then become useless if theres no blood.

Lol..You don't understand .

The practice in UCH and most government hospitals is : If a patient needed blood, Blood would be gotten from the blood bank while the relatives pay for screening of the blood because you want to make sure the blood of the would- be recipient and the donor matches. And you also want to make sure the blood isn't infected i.e hiv/ hepatitis .

What they pay for is not the the blood itself but the screening of the blood . Blood itself is totally free in most public hospitals .
If a patient needed 5 units of blood , he/she pays 7k .
Getting that same units of blood in private facilities would cost the patient nothing less than 50k which is even for the cheapest blood group (because the cost even depends on the blood group ).

And the blood must be replaced . So before these free blood units are released from the blood bank , they must be replaced .
Patients' relatives donate the replacement usually but if for some reasons they couldn't donate , they get someone to do it for them ( the relatives pay this kinda person ).

What the general public need to understand about the structure of a government hospital is that no healthworker ( Doctors , Nurses, pharmacists and Lab scientists) comes in direct contact with your money and as such whatever you pay doesn't benefit him directly .

Yes, you are right to an extent, but the purpose of this blood donation has been defeated as people in dire need of blood does not get it in most cases. You are then forced to purchase from external blood bank recommended by the blood bank attendant of the general hospital. Of course, we know what transpired, it is the same blood that was donated that is being sold out there.

are those doing the screening not working for the state at the expenses of taxpayers? same taxpayers you still want to pay for screening?

state paying means the screening should be done for free
