YeeboMuslim:I once moved my brother to a different hospital because the hospital want him to be transfuse before commencing treatment...... just little shortage of blood he can recover from. the one when pain me be say them no do any test before them begin talk about blood. child birth is not something you need blood for in most cases. most hospital now use it as a means to get blood for sale. child birth is something you prepare for 9 months ahead so you should be able to know which patiently may likely need blood 1 Like |

YeeboMuslim: Bro I get to understand you. I have four children in Lagos general hospital and I gave four pints of blood over a period of seven years but my wife never got to use any. So what happens to the blood. Lets say it is used for accident victims, will they not pay and someone tells me NOBODY SELLS BLOOD. Now if the accident patients don't pay but replace then nobody should tell us there is scarcity of blood because families expectant mothers have donated tons of blood which they didn't use. It is simple maths. Who is fooling who? 3 Likes 1 Share |

Lostz:I'm sure that didn't happen in a government hospital . I agree with what you said but things happen and you have to prepare for any outcome hence the need for blood in most cases . May God help us all |

7k is outrageous for screening, getting a blood bag,HCV,BHsAg and RVS for screening shouldn't cost more than 3k if we want to tell ourselves the truth. The 7,000 you paid is for blood screening and cross matching. Nobody sold your blood. your blood was simply used for another person that was in need of blood and the person will also replace the blood before leaving the hospital.[/quote] |

YeeboMuslim:it was in a government hospital (State). we moved to a federal hospital and they did everything without even complaining of blood. 9 months is enough to know which pregnant woman may need blood. you can't be forcing people to donate blood |

9jaDoomCountry:I understand where you are coming from . But do you know that blood expires and lose it's essence in about 6 weeks even with appropriate storage . Lol Even blood gets bad way before that 42 days. Yes, the relatives of those accident victims would donate to replace the blood too. That's how the system works . And they are well documented and accounted for . The doctors or nurses don't benefit anything from the blood . And people should cultivate the habit of donating blood voluntarily. We have over 170million people to do that . PS : I donate blood twice every year. Been doing that since I was in medical school. |

ikorodureporta: Nice. Less than 1% of pregnant women would need blood during delivery . Why forcing them to donate, pay for screening and the blood will not be used for them. |

Lostz: U keep repeating the above statement like u are a soothsayer..... 9 months isn't enough to know who will need blood transfusion during labour.... Labour is a different ball game....ok Stop spreading ignorance all over the place... If u guys want free healthcare in govt hospitals..... Hold your politicians responsible and demand they initiate health insurance or waivers.... Stop picking on healthcare workers who are also victim of the poor system..... As for the judge.... She's just a joker and her ruling is only good as thrash.... |

Joeboy88: I asked a lab scientist this question too. He said the reason they sell donated blood is because it costs a lot to screen donated blood before certifying it healthy for transfusion. I however have my reservation still. UCH ,Ibadan has one unbelievable act. They tell pregnant women to bring someone (preferably their husbands) to donate blood for them in advance but when there is safe delivery, the donated blood is gone (I have no problem with that), the part that irritates me is that in the event of the need for blood transfusion, the husband is made to still buy blood irrespective of previously donating or not. That to me is scam! |

YeeboMuslim: It didn't take me time to figure out that I was interacting with a matured mind. I also sensed too that you are in the medical line even before I got to your last sentence. Having said that, I never know blood expires anyway. I read in one medical journal years back that medical personals in America achieved pregnancy with a sperm cell that had been preserved for twenty two years on a second attempt. I also read that in the western world people with high IQ are asked to donate their sperm for future use, so I thought once preserved and managed well it will remain potent. Thank you for the education bro. |

noblealuu: I think whatever is donated freely under such a condition and not used, should be given to indigent patients. Blood donation is done freely in the Western world as a form of social responsibility. If we all do it more often, there'll probably be no need to pay in some cases or the cost will be minimal. |

Lostz:Transfusion is part of commencing treatment nah! How do you know he had just little shortage? You did PCV test for him? You can't say someone prepared 9 months for childbirth.Childbirth itself is a whole new world and there are sudden challenges unexpected that can spring up.Uterine bleeding could start unexpectedly. You need to be prepared. The judgement stopping compulsory donation is not right though I agree some review has to be done. A lot of people forget that there are patients who do not pay when they come to the hospital because they can't afford it.These extras are used for them. |
