After I saw how my dad suffered to raise the two of us I and my sibling till the company he was working with went down. We started living from one aunt house to uncles houses. I have been thrown out on four occasions, accused of stealing on many occasions, starved by family, disowned by my own mother who is in the abroad sending monies to different people in Nigeria and disregarding her son because I looked like my father. At 21 I moved to ibadan, stayed with a friend, dumped by my gf, Hustled to get my cert, did my Nysc, hustled more, bought a land at ibadan, bought my first car, bought another car, moved down to Lagos, rented a apartment.

Now I have a unisex salon, a boutique, a car listed on Bolt, and Presently working on roofing my project.

It’s not been easy. Not all women are mothers.
it’s thesame thing I’m battling brother i had problems in school and started afresh without no body’s consent at home my mom hates me to an extent I doubt if she’s my mother tho I don’t stay with her my father does the best for my siblings but I’m thankful to god that I’m in 200lvl now n this’s my fifth year in school I’m 21 I hope to give a testimony similar to yours in the nearest future gods willing

Well, I didn't only grew up poor, I also grew up disabled after suffering permanent hearing loss since I was a kid in primary school.
As painful as that hearing loss was, it was what later pushed me to go and learn a trade in barbing since my hearing loss will be a great hindrance to my pursuit of higher education as there is no way I could have survived in conventional universities even though I managed to survived conventional high school up to SS2, and the other obvious choice which is a university for the deafs is not an option either as I never learned sign language.
long story short, I am a boss barber now with my own shop and two obedient apprentice.
By God's grace l am completely totally independent and out of poverty.
Doesn't sound so much like a big deal but when l count the number of able bodied people l know who are not doing well as l am and will give anything just to be in my position, and the relations and friends l have been able to assist whenever l could, l can not but say a big thank you to God.

I don't want to contribute on this thread but I just can't look away, there's a drive in me stronger than me.

First, I want young people to Know that poverty is a state of mind. It has little to do with how deep your pocket is.
Second, there's no escape formula to escape that which you see as poverty.

Your version of poverty, I've been there. We lived in what Yorubas call ' agboile' densely populated with about 2 or 3 toilets to a hundred people. But the life lessons that house taught me are invaluable. I can't trade that experience for Trump's White House. Many of us who were raised there, you won't believe where they are now. About a half don't even live in Nigeria anymore.

You can choose where you wanna be without allowing anything to limit you. I used to hawk palm oil for my mum but I wasn't moved one bit, in spite of the no study time, not many of my mates could stand me in school. My big sister was my motivation point. A worthy role model. Our routine is return from school, go hawk, do house chores and do more house chores. But my sis now, she slowed down because of the virus. Her job takes her from one overseas country to the other. It's like going to Idumota and I'm not doing badly too.

We didn't do anything special. Just be doing something. I started very small. Whatever your hands find doing, once it's legit, do it. Make sure you're not retrogressing. God's grace always abound. Now, I'm not trying to go all 'churchy' on you but it's the truth.
My idea of affluence is being able to do something for people around you when they need you to and being able to do a little something for yourself too. That smile or sigh of relief on their faces goes a loooooong way.

I'm not from a poor family by the way, I've always be driven to school in a Lexus with AC and a personal driver that's drives me and my brother's. Lived in a house with 8 rooms when we are just 6.
When I was in secondary school, jss2, I always wanted to make money myself, my dad used to give me 1000 naira, and I was so mad that even with everything he had I was getting so little. I went to the school canteen to buy sweet and noticed it was sold 15 naira in my school, but sold 5naira outside back then. Then I got an idea, So I started buying lollipop sweets to sell In school my dad never knew.and I sold and made some money. Did that till I got to ss1 before I stopped, that when I grew up small and stated collecting 500 naira for lunch everyday. Well after school I still went to install games and music for people in the market, my dad never knew, the day he found out he actually arrested. Lol. But in all this I wanted to make something for myself. But my dad finally made me lazy. I wish I was born poor, I won't be lazy and rude as I am right now.maybe who knows I could have even made my own personal million without my pops help..such is life.

We should create a thread about middle class kids especially those from conservative backgrounds. Our parents believe they have everything and we shouldn't do certain things. They believe we should only read and keep the family's business . I would have been a footballer in Europe if I had freedom as a child.

Yeah. But I don't think there is anything called middle class. It either your rich or poor. Money is infinite and as such nobody is super rich.

I was not born into poverty neither did I know what pauperism was until my dad divorced my mum to be with another woman with four children.

My mum was a full time house wife, maybe I should say she was a stay at home mum. My dad was the one working, he was a contractor and we never lacked anything until he sent us out of the house ( my mum and 4 children).

You can imagine a woman without a job taking care of four children I.e 3 boys and 1 girl. Thank God for some of my mother's friends and an uncle in the States who gave her money to start a beer parlour. It was the proceed from the joint that my mum was able to send us to school, pay for our one room face me, I box you room at Mokola Ibadan. It was not easy taking care of four children especially when they are male children (that is another story).

Beer parlour business was not a lucrative business particularly if it was not on a large scale. Many a times we found it difficult to sell a bottle of beer. We did not have much customers but God was kind to us. Sometimes also, we engaged in prayers to have customer so that there could be food on the table. But my mum was tenacious and focused that her children must go to school and that was exactly what happened.

To cut the long story short, I gained admission into the University and I graduated with one of the best results in my set. But I could not secure a job, That became a problem, i had thought that with my result i will secure a good job but all to no avail, yet my mum was dogged and supportive.

I had to go for master programme and during the course of the programne, i suffered a lot, no money to do my assignmen, no money to pay the school fee but I tarried on, shortly after concluding the programme, I secured a job and now, I have my own family, my own car and my own house and life becomes rosy, i give all glory to God.

Unfortunately, my mother who suffered and toiled did not live to enjoy the fruit of her labour and the man who abandoned us suddenly remembered that he had children somewhere. Lol. That is story for another day.

I never make ahm but I believe I will surely make it in life. But in my own observations, nobody can make money without source of income, what is sources of income? Source of income is anything that you are doing for a living. And in this life nobody will sue you or have right to abuse you if you create thousand ways of income for yourself, what I means is that create many ways that will bring money for you if you capable of doing so but before you create more source of income first ask yourself these two questions 1 are you satisfy with the work you re doing 2 are you you satisfy your condition? If no you have right to try From option A-Z if you like. But make sure you good at whatever you doing re doing for a living because people want to pay only for Good Work.

Be the best at your hustle good shall come to you and stop useless flexing if you send your money on useless surely you will get useless result. Where your money goto will tell if you will be great or not. That is my own observations.

Now let me tell you this good information.

Don't get happy or feel OK if you pay a huge money for a work but you didn't see good result. Here is good news At LEM where we deal with anything contain painting, we re into house painting, frame ( your portrait), T-shirt design, branding, and printing & publishing. BruncleZuma:
Success is a mindset...I was a poor individual, a poor student but omo I am that person you'd have to kill and cut off his head before I ever give up. So here I am, doing decently for myself and my family.

I have starved, I have seen my parents and siblings hungry. I have run away from home twice just to escape poverty.

I have sold bread, pure water, akamu, I have worked in a pure water factory when they were all manual, I have seen my parents swallow their pride to borrow just so we'd go to school and have something to feed on, I have seen all this and I don't blame no village people.

All I needed through all this travails was an opportunity and the mindset to see it as one.

Don't get me started with the hand me downs, JESU! I wish no man poverty, no matter what side of the Niger you find yourself, it's worse than death. In death, you are at peace.

How did I do it: I read alot, I started doing graphics design and video editing to augment, switched to adding one or two kpali by browsing newspapers to know what's the latest professional course to do for the career of my choice, tried my hands in so many useless certifications that I had to chuck most of them.

I have confidence, my balls are made of brass and I am a fast learner.

Everything day brings it's own opportunities and I try to learn one new thing a day. Every useless information I have learned had come in handy in my current profession.

I waste nothing.

My advise, No fear anybody, nah hustle we all come this life to hustle, the highest them go talk nah NO, the worst they can do is call security.
Care to expand on your last paragraph?
