The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has just announced a 500 billion rand (10 trillion naira) social and economic support package to assist households and businesses over the next coming months amid the coronavirus crisis.

In a sign of a possible lockdown extension the president also announced a doubling of the social grant payment amount by an extra 500 rands (10,000 naira) over the next six months to millions of poor households across the country. The unemployed will for the first time ever receive R350 (N7000) over the same period.

Further signs of a continued lockdown are to be found in the escalating daily numbers of covid-19 cases. Today the country registered 165 new cases bringing the total to 3465.
