Some patients with high fever in Kano State cannot access healthcare service because doctors are turning them away, Daily Trust has learnt. Aminu Muhammad, a resident of Gandun Albasa told Daily Trust on Sunday that his sick father was rejected at the Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) when he was taken for medical treatment. “I rushed my sick father to AKTH in a critical condition but, we were rejected on ground that there was no bed to admit him. When we first arrived at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital, the doctor directed us to stay away from him,” Muhammad said.

“We waited for sometime before the doctor asked me some questions about the condition of my father. What annoyed me was that the doctor did not allow us close to him for him to examine my father. “Rather, he placed a chair about six meters away from him and when I told him that my father was suffering from high fever, he ordered us to leave the hospital that they do not have bed to admit him. I took him to Nassarwa Hospital and it was the same story. “Finally, he was admitted at Murata Muhammad Specialist Hospital and my father passed on after three days at Murata Muhammad hospital,” he said.

Others spoken to however mentioned other factors, such as overcrowding at the hospitals, as the cause of their predicament. Alhaji Ibrahim Habibu, a resident of Nassarawa GRA told Co that he recently took his older brother to Nassarawa Hospital for medical attention only to find the hospital’s A&E unit crowded with patients. “Despite the crowd, my brother was not rejected. He was attended to by doctors. He was given three drips before he was referred to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital where he finally passed on.

At both Nassarawa and Murtala Hospital, he was attended to by doctors. Contrary to speculations, nobody rejects him at the two hospitals,” he said. Alhaji Aminu Muhammad, a resident of Gwale in Kano city told Daily Trust on Sunday that the situation is becoming alarming as many people are dying due lack of access to healthcare.

He said three elderly persons died in his area on the way to hospital last week Thursday, saying, “The sick persons were rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital but eventually died before arriving at the hospital.”

Last week some bereaved families told Daily Trust that their relatives were on outpatient visitations to hospitals for various ailments but with the lockdown in force, coupled with the coronavirus scare at private health facilities, the deceased had some disruptions that kept them from accessing medical care, which might have resulted in their deaths.

It has started, doctors avoiding patients (you can't blame them), people seeking help and don't know where to go (lack of planning and organisation). A working system is needed in kano asap

Which way Nigeria?

What a time to be alive!
Not the best time to have an illness o!

And the governor is both making U-turn and insisting on relaxing lock down in the same state already overwhelmed by surge in case which was aresult of their negligence in the first place... playing monopoly with the lives of the people there.

Exercise and eat healthy, no matter how cheap,
Protect yourself..... You're your own surest protection. The health workers are humans too.. And they will be just as scared

Access to quality healthcare has never been easy in Nigeria, that's why the ilks of our politicians travel abroad for sickness like headaches. Thankfully they are also trapped here for now.
He who fails to plan plans to fail.
I am looking forward to live after Covid 19 hoping that Nigerian leaders and citizens alike will learn and start building a nation we all can be proud of.

Provide the right environment and PPE for the doctors and they won’t have to turn people away. The rot in the Nigerian system is unbelievable.

Nigeria is currently sitting on a powder keg and it's imminently ready to explode.
The UK with the population of about 66.7 million has relatively adequate health professionals and sophisticated health facilities but still not be able to annihilate this dreaded COVID-19 with records of about thirty(30) thousand deaths.
Nigeria's population is about 200 million with nothing to write home about and run-of-the-mill medical facilities coupled with demoralized health workers.
What is our fate?
May God avert this looming disaster.

Kano is now the Nigeria New York. Unfortunately, not much is been done to flatten the curve. Rather, geometric increase is what we are seeing. All thanks to religion and willful ignorance

With all the donations, isolation centers being opened, have PPE being provided for health workers even in the most remote places or are they waiting for USA, Germany or China? This men and women are on the Frontline risking their lives, I just hope they're properly protected.

Lock border ,lock border...Mr President and his cronies didn't listen, they left the borders knowing fully well we don't have the capacity to handle this pandemic

Now this is the result....Innocent ,Health workers, Almajiris and the poor are paying for it severely.

Get full body PPE kit for health workers, get comprehensive health insurance for health workers and then pay a fantastic bonus to health workers, payable per day or per patients served per day.

They won't do that. They prefer stuffing dollars in their dirty underwear.
