Should I Resign My Good Bank Job And Start A Business? by tosinntoyin: 11:55pm On May 31, 2020 |
Dear all, I really need an advice. I currently work with one of the Nigerian banks. My monthly take home is about 450k and quite good. My major problem right now is that I have just been transferred from a Branch at one end of Lagos to another end of Lagos. All efforts to convince my boss to deploy me to a closer branch has proved abortive. Going to work daily right now is a very difficult especially during this raining season and covid 19th period. I spend roughly 3-4 hours on the road when going to work and back home. I am currently raising my kids on my own right now and dont know how I would manage when school resumes. Before now I drop them off on my way to work in the morning and my friend picks them up to her house in the afternoon till I get back. I currently have a savings of 2million and would love to start a biz( I dont know what kind) as am comptemplating resigning and start a biz instead so that I can have time for my kids and not die due to stress Please i really need advice for you all. 66 Likes 4 Shares |

I think you're being too hasty and would appeal to you not to make a hasty decision that will cause you damage because you sound like someone who's about to react ( from negative reactions ) rather than someone who's about to embark on a well planned action. There's a difference. Trust me I know. I qualify to give you sound counsel as a business operator and would like to discredit any thoughts of you quitting you job because of your savings. Let's take it step by step 1. Financial security is important. Can you reduce your monthly expenses and boost your savings so you can save let's say 300k monthly, which in six months gives you an approximate of another 2 Million Naira 2. Start the process of setting up a business while you're still employed. This way you can weigh the options if it's for you or not. And can easily convert your salaries towards the establishment of the business 3. Do not quit your job until you've had a well to Houghton out business plan and have put it into effect. Remember money is just half the equation, the other half the business 4. Be more tolerant rather than being irritated because things aren't working for you from a place of convenience. Start thinking positive thoughts about the positives of your job. I'm sure it can't be all negative. Whatever it's costing you, give yourself the opportunity to reflect and tell yourself giving it six more months for proper planning won't do you harm 5. Get a second accommodation closer to work. So you can shuttle between both ends. Friday home till Sunday. Have you considered this? 6. Get a nanny and if you can afford it, get a driver too and delegate some of the duties with the kids care to them. 7. Give yourself time. Do not jump to the next thing until that so-called " next thing " has been fully constructed while you're still maintaining the one that looks stressful. I'm sorry to say, but having just 2 Million Naira savings on a 459k monthly job directly implies you're in a financial crisis already but don't know. And rocking the boat will leave you at the disadvantaged position 1129 Likes 80 Shares |

keep the job and use salary to start and boost the business..buy and read Kiyosaki's 'before you quit your job.. however starting a biz wont reduce your stress which seems to be ur main issue. for that i would advice you relocate to be near your new office..your biz should also be in that axis 74 Likes 8 Shares |

I wouldn't advice you quit your job yet... If you look at it, you need to think of a business that would give you returns of about 300k or 200k per month.... Make a feasibility study on such businesses first before thinking if quitting... Your children are safe in God's hand 41 Likes 3 Shares |

You got just 2 Milla in your account and you already thinking quitting your 450k job for whatever business you not even sure yet if it'd blossom or not Come on man go get a maid or an errand boy firsr They are trustworthy agencies out there that outsources maids and errand boys that are reliable enough to look after your kids when you at work And make sure you start saving at least 60% of your monthly pay till you hit an amount enough to kickstart a never-waning business and still have enough to fall back on before you think of quitting that job. Country is hard it's not even up to 10% of the workforce earns such nowadays, use your head o Peace 214 Likes 6 Shares |

Try and get an apartment close to ur place of work so as not to spend 3-4 hours daily on the road. U can also change the school ur kids attend. Note: Don't quit ur job, keep saving. 172 Likes 5 Shares |

If you want to do business, you should have decided earlier in your life. Igbo men decide this very early as young as 15 and they don't turn back or care what anybody will say. They stick to it and until they make it or don't make it. But trying to switch to business in your 30s or 40s, it won't be easy oh. Side business okay but fulltime, make sure you do your homework well well. Business is a profession 79 Likes 2 Shares

I don't know how long you've been earning ₦450K, but having a paltry ₦2m in saving is quite low. Think about that in relation to the business you're planning on starting. 39 Likes |

It is obvious that you have not even come up with a viable business idea yet so I suggest you continue with your job. Businesses ain't booming yet because of the pandemic and even if you start a business now, it will take you a while before your business stabilizes & since N2M ain't that much, you will be so broke that you will start feeding your kids from your capital then the business will collapse. I suggest you adjust to the new post covid19 era & keep your job. Until you have come up with a viable feasibility study on the type of business you intend to go into and until you have saved up to 8-10M, don't resign yet. 26 Likes |

Just stay there for now. You are not ready for this big move. Business for 450k earner must be well thought out . Execpt you can afford to earn less for like 1_3 yrs before real business profit begins 5 Likes |

If you can relocate, relocate. If you cant relocate, You can get a nanny, getting a trust worthy nanny might be the issue, Someone elderly and maybe a widow will be perfect( Some who has grown children and can focus on on your kids, and No husband to load over her), You can have someone drop your kids in the morning for a fee There are agents that can help you get reliable Nannny You can also use your church ( if you are a christian) , you should be able to get a reliable recommendation from someone. 2m is too small to take that risk,You dont have an existing business yet , You will not be able to maintain your lifestyle with that. 21 Likes 1 Share |
