IBADAN – A People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Oyo State, Bisi Olopoeyan, has expressed doubt over the party’s re-elec­tion in the state.

Lamenting the neglect of party members by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde and PDP elected officers, he said aggrieving party members may not work for their re-elec­tion in 2023.

Olopoeyan, during a radio programme “LAGBO OSE­LU”, described Oyo PDP chief­tains and members as used and dumped personnel, say­ing Governor Makinde killed the party structure in the state immediately he won the state governorship election.

“Our governor has used and dumped the party and its members. He was running af­ter us before and during the campaign, now he and his people had started adminis­tration but shed our party to carcass, not taking care of the platform he used to win the election anymore.

“Yes, he has killed Oyo PDP, no PDP chieftains and core members remain loyal to the party again. Some had gone silence while many had deserted Molete, the party secretariat to government secretariat, to lobby for ap­pointment, whereas it is our administration. Government should be the one to be going after party members in their respective wards and local governments.”

if the electoral act amendment does not include electronic collation,no independent candidate can win any election in Nigeria, the real deal are the party agents during election,where is the independent candidate going to get the numbers and the money to mobilise them

Independent candidacy alone won't solve the problem. Votes must also begin to count. And the electorates themselves need to be more active. In short it is a complex problem.

If you look at Makinde's political history, you will find that he had been contesting for political office under less popular political parties (which you can equate to being an 'independent candidacy' of sorts), but didn't do too well, until he moved to PDP before the 2019 election. Unfortunately for him, he needed to form alliances with 'strange bed fellows', not only in different factions within the Oyo PDP, but also other parties in the state so that he could get enough votes and spread to defeat the incumbent party. And as is the case with politics, everybody that works for your election will be expecting reward in the form of patronage.

In Makinde's case it appears he promised too many people so much that he is now finding it difficult to satisfy them all. The reality on the ground is that there are influential factional PDP chieftains in the state that are feeling shut out of his government. Then the other 'alliance partners' like Lanlehin (ADP) and Sharafadeen Alli (ZLP) are also accusing him of abandonment after 'working for him'.

So you see, it's not just about independent candidacy because that may not be enough to win election. And when you ride on other people's platforms and support to win election, it's not easy managing and balancing all the interests involved.
