How does your data get depleted? You dont pay for You tube too.
How do you seperate adverts meant for Nigeria in Lagos, UK or America?

Geolocation. They can tell where you are located using a combination of ip address and GPS. The ads someone in Lagos sees can be different from the ones seen in Abuja

Nigeria FG gives us, the people, nothing. No free internet covers, no established ICT hubs around the country, no steady power supplies to sustain home-based and office-resident Nigerian tech businesses(even the free electricity promised during the covid-19 lockdown, they failed to deliver). No national programme on tech skills acquisition (most techs get their trainings online). No support from the Nigerian FG to encourage these tech companies to expand their influence around the country and grow their computer technology capacities by training more computer enthusiasts in new skills.
Is it when we get to the breaking point that they will realise that the country is doomed.
Like you can't go on comparing what you see in a well develop country and come back here (Stagnant country) thinking you can just implement what you see over there in here just like that without building it up.
Cause if you're to charge those companies you have to be considerate of the customers too. Cause without the customers there won't be such companies.

How many years did it take before Nigeria can partake of Netflix? This bastard government just want to destroy all the effort and the progress that took 20 years to bring this digital investors here. Kemi Adeosun is 10 trillion times better than this quota system product. But because of one useless NYSC certificate exemption error, foolish Nigerians rushed to crucify her, not knowing they were acting the script of the hegemonic herdsmen in the north, hope you guys are happy now with the devil substitute they don give una. later she will introduce tax for sleeping at night. Tueehhhhhh!

Well, if Netflix, Google, et al are paying taxes in the US and the EU, why should Nigeria be exempt?

Is the new law made to tax your data or tax the companies making money from Nigeria? If Nairaland is paying taxes in Nigeria, why should Facebook, Netflix, Twitter etc not pay taxes from the revenue made in Nigeria?

Are these companies paying taxes in Europe or not? So, why should they not pay taxes in Nigeria despite generating income from the country?

Will the next government not benefit from the tax reforms that the current government is carrying out? Must you guys criticize everything?

See, this new law is long overdue. It should have been in place a long time ago.

The problem is that the tax laws are being made and implemented by APC and PMB. Some people will never view their strategies objectively. Never!!!

Nigerians!!!

This is the new norm, every country is doing it now. You can’t be making money from a country and not pay tax!

Every foreign purchase from eBay or Amazon is subjected to online tax, which mean you paying tax to that country, because it’s a law.

Same thing should apply in Nigeria as well, online companies irrespective of where they are based or located should pay tax for income originating from Nigeria.

Every other country with responsible govt

Nigeria, a country of fools, run by idiots! Until you learn to say NO......and Enough is enough, will these idiots continue to exploit you!!

The first alarm bell was petrol subsidy - Till now no refinery, so you continue to pay excess amounts for cheap gasoline at inflated prices. The man who made the milk and sold it for 1k is now buying butter at 5k, and refuses to learn how to make butter from milk.

Secondly, they expect you to pay world prices for mediocre service, how can you compare the prices for fuel in Nigeria to other developed countries where fuel duty is adequately used to make good roads!!?? Which is non-existent in Nigeria.

The truth is this, you Nigerian cowards will bend and bend and bend till you will break and then the bloodletting will be worse than Liberia!!

Pls don't respond to them. They know nothing. Those companies are raking in billions from Nigeria. Google should be included.

Someone even said that Facebook doesn't make much from Nigeria. How? What exactly is wrong with us? With this, some people may carry placards to protest why foreign companies that make money from Nigeria should pay taxes to us.

Mr man, you should be even grateful that they have included Nigeria in their coverage. I was trying to do something online recently, "ordinary" African countries like angola, kenya etc were included, but Nigeria was blocked. If these guys pull out, it is your useless country that will drown back to the stone age of NTA media and radio Nigeria broadcasting grin. Tax fire. All the trillions in naira local tax they have been collecting, what do they do with it other than stealing, embezzlement, corruption and turning themselves to overnight billionaires? While I understand your point we should also not throw the baby out with the bath water, if they included Nigeria in their covergae it wasn't because they are that charitable, odds are they are raking in good profit from Nigeria a country where people don't joke with Entertainment (ask yourself why some blockbusters have been opening in Nigeria for some time now?), if they are being taxed in other countries then they should be taxed in Nigeria also else they can keep their business elsewhere but believe me they wouldn't because all profit na still profit.

Explain if you understand it. Facebook and co already pay tax to appropriate authority. Charging them again will be passed to consumers like you and I. It is like when you buy a sofrware, do you still pay for using the software?

they are not paying tax. they don't even seek clearance before operating in Nigeria.

companies like Facebook only pay taxes where they are domiciled not where their goods are consumed.

that is why many countries are upgrading their tax rules so they can get something from these digital companies.

Omooba77:

I know what I am saying. It amounts to double taxation because it will be pass down to the consumers. Hope you get it now. If Government impose a tax, let say 10% on the #4k, you as consumer will pay #4100. Increasing the cost on. See why Dstv increase its subscription.
We government tax play store too?

Let me help you.

1. Only foreign companies offering digital services, with Significant Economic Presence, will be taxed; and
2. The foreign company MUST earn more than 25 Million naira in Nigeria, IN NAIRA.

It’s very simple brother. They will simply be taxed over the revenue generated in Nigeria, provided the threshold above is triggered.

It doesn’t amount to double taxation, certainly not from the perspective of Nigeria - because as it were, they are making money off Nigerians without giving back.

Now whether they pass on the costs to the consumer is a different issue for the Consumer Protection Agency. In developed societies, companies can’t arbitrarily increase prices of their services/products. Nigeria will get there someday - but the tax imposition is good for the country.

Let me also make a final note.
The reasons many of these MNCs rake in huge amount of Revenues is because they have big Tac Firms assisting them with Tax evasion and avoidance, by exploiting loopholes in Tax laws.

You would see that there have been recent cases of Google and FB punished By the EU for tax evasion- in Ireland and I think France.

Through Accounting principles such as Transfer Pricing - a Company can wire all its revenue to a tax haven country (like Cayman Islands) for the purposes of tax remittance - thereby avoiding the payment of taxes in countries where the revenues were made.

My brother you would have to very knowledgeable in these things to understand that these MNCs are big rip offs!

I don't see any reason why Netflix and Facebook especially, shouldn't pay tax for all the money they cart away from Nigeria.

But las las who the tax go help? Still to fatten the pocket of the rich

I’m surprised these MNCs are not being taxed already, the FG need to get their acts together. The main challenge like they said is how to get these companies to comply.

can't be done how are they going to monetized it. Revenue are generated when data is sold to a third party. I don't know of any third party in Nigeria that buys harvested data from any of these service providers hence no revenue is being generated locally. Therefore nothing to tax.

People should understand that what government wants to tax is not individual data but the profit these companies make in Nigeria.
