The average human has about 9,000 taste buds but the Catfish has over 20,000 taste buds. In fact, some large catfish can have as many as 100,000 taste buds.

This is because the Catfish has taste buds not only on its mouth but all over it's body. These taste buds allow the fish not only to taste when prey is nearby but to also hone in on its exact location.

This highly developed sense of taste is crucial for catfish which often live and hunt in murky waters with low visibility. With the thousands of taste buds, they are able to catch prey without visual cues.
