Activists Perform Mock Commissioning Of Bad Roads In Anambra

Onitsha – A civil rights organisation, Human Rights Liberty Access and Peace Defenders’Foundation (HURIDE), has performed a mock commissioning of some roads in Anambra State as a way to call the attention of the state government to the urgent need for road repairs and rehabilitation.

HURIDE also stated that bad roads in Anambra State have claimed at least nine lives in Onitsha and environs.

The organisation added that among the victims were a pregnant woman, a 70-year-old man whose tricycle was submerged in pool of flood water at Haruna Street.

Other victims were about five Keke operators and their psssengers who trailer fell on at Obodo-Ukwu road,Ogbaru Local Government Area

HURIDE made these allegations on Friday its members performed mock commissioning of Obodo-Ukwu and Ede Road in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the State.

Leading members of HURIDE to perform the exercise, Dede Uzor A Uzor, who is their chairman, said they decided to commission the road which has been split into two parts since Governor Willie Obiano, whose primary duty it is to construct the road has forgotten it or was too busy to remember to rehabilitate the road and other roads in the State.

He said Obodo-Ukwu road is strategic to the economic prosperity of the State in the sense that it links Owerri Road with the entire Ogbaru Local Government Area including Harbour industrial estate of the state

HURIDE boss lamented the state of roads in Okpoko and other roads in Onitsha and environs have claimed more than nine lives since last month, including at Haruna road, where a pregnant woman and 70 years man died when their tricycle was submerged in a pool of water.

He said: “We learned the Governor is too busy to pay attention to the rehabilitation of the road and others in the State.

“That is to say that he is too busy to govern. So we are helping him to commission some of these bad roads, so that any time he wakes up from slumber, he can come and do the road”

Dede Uzor said Haruna Street is so sttrategic because it links Main Market, the biggest market in West Africa with the Western flamk.

The group threatened that after 14 days and there was no action by the Governor, they would not hesitate to mobilise human right community and other progressive-minded people to occupy the road until something drastic is done.

In his own speech, Comrade Ekene Nnadi, chairman, Campaign for Democracy (CD) in the State, called on the House of Assembly to initiate ways to dialogue with Governor Willie Obiano to it up in his constitutional duties.

They are Anambra local activists, must you involve other states into your local politics just to feel better?
