Did You Know That The Ankara Wax Is Not African? by ADMAF(m): 8:31am On Jun 27, 2020 |
Imagine how shocked I was to find out that the "ANKARA" wax print that is so readily tagged a symbol of African identity, industry and sophistication was stolen from an Asian culture, replicated in Europe, forced on the Malay and then exported to Africa. In reality, "our" wax prints are just subtle reinforcements of the perpetuation of colonialism and of the utmost economic benefit to Europe ( and more recently the Chinese). Ankara did not originate from the continent and until relatively recently, weren't even produced on the continent. gregyboy:You can make your point without being disrespectful. Besides, I know about the origin of cassava and beans.Yams however, are indigenous to Africa. One thing about people who claim to know it all is that in their haste to make sense, they often convey nonsense. You need to know that yam is native to Africa. Reading is clearly different from assimilation. Have a good day. 1 Like |

We can all contribute to issues without being obnoxious. Yes, yams are indigenous to Africa. Same as the mighty Oil Palm. During the the European voyages of discovery and international trade they succeed in being the principal agents of intercontinental dispersal of food crops, herbal medicines, local technologies, etc from one continent to another. No need to be shocked at Ankara being foreign, because the tea, chocolate, and coffee the Europeans have appropriated as an essence of their own culture is not indegenous to Europe and cannot even grow there. They took it from other continents too. The Europeans found out that Ankara resonated well with the preferences of the Africans and started selling it to them, that's all; And the Africans have now made Ankara a cornerstone of their culture just as the oyibos adopted tea, coffee and chocolate drinking as their culture because they liked it so much. The people that grow all those tea, coffee and cocoa do not even like consuming those items the way the oyibos do. |
