Self-Injury: Testing the Waters for a Suicide Attempt

Last month, my ex-girlfriend called me. On the phone, we discussed our daily activities, and did a little small talk and laughing. Still filled with excitement, my ex told me that she has thoughts of cutting herself with a blade. When I asked "why?" she told me that she wanted to know the feeling of bleeding out. I was in shock.

What is Self-Injury?

Also known as Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), Self-injury is the act of harming oneself, without the intent of suicide. Although few cases of self-injury usually end in suicide.

People who harm themselves do so to reduce their emotional turmoil, and a good number of them are teenagers. Some other reasons why people injure themselves include:
• To express anger.
• To minimize feelings of sadness of loneliness.
• To feel something.
• Boredom.
• Self-hatred
• To get attention to their emotional suffering.
• To get helped.

Self-injury is a symptom of other underlying problems such as Depression, Anxiety, and low self-esteem. Those who often self-injure suffer from one or more of these mental problems.
